Comments (2)PSPMSX v1.5.1: MSX Emulator Updated w/ IRDA Joy Support
greg | August 23, 2009
PSPCAP32 isn’t the only emulator sporting the 1.5.1 tag; ZX-81’s got an all new version of his PSP fMSX port too. It’s the same version number, same era, pretty much the same change log — different home computer. PSPMSX emulates the MSX, MSX2, and MSX2+.
For those who have never heard about IRDA joystick project, the goal was to connect your old DB9 joystick (compatible with Atari, Amiga, Amstrad etc …) or a paddle device to your PSP FAT. Buzz has written the driver and designed the PCB and programmed the PIC micro-controller, while I was in charge of emulator enhancements.
If you have the skills and the bills ($20 max.) you can build your own IRDA Joy Box. The schematics and source are available in the PSPMSX archive; check the contrib folder.
PSPMSX v1.5.1 changes:
- IRDA Joystick box support
- Add “IRDA joystick” device support for both DB9 Joystick and Atari Paddle
- Add menu for IRDA joystick settings and keys mapping
- Add option to choose between IRDA devices (keyboard such as Targus or joystick using Buzz device)

Comments (10)PSPHUGO v1.3.0: PC Engine/TurboGrafx 16 Emulator Updated
greg | May 29, 2009
Another console I grew up on — NEC’s TurboGrafx 16. Others may remember this console as the PC Engine, whatever the case, it packed serious hours of awesomeness. And just today — ZX-81 delivers a few more hours with PSPHUGO v1.3.0 — a port of the famous Hu-Go emulator running on a variety of platforms.

PSPHUGO v1.3.0 changes…
- Audio Track support for CD-ROM (support only MP3 format with stereo 16 bits samples at 22k or 44k rate)
- CD-ROM TOC file format support.
- Using TurboRip, ripped CD can now be used directly with PSP-Hugo! See README file for explanations)
- Increase PSP clock speed when playing mp3 CD tracks
- Disable sound while saving states & screenshots (to avoid scratchy noise for few seconds)
- Fix sleep mode issue
- Replace SDL sound engine by direct PSP audio stuff to improve performances
- Fix issue when loading more than one CD image
- New backgrounds
My apologies to Mike D for frying your TG-16 power supply back in the day.

Comments (4)IrDA Joystick Mod/Hack for the PSP-1000
greg | April 20, 2009
When emulating all those old-school joystick-enabled consoles using only the standard set of PSP controls isn’t enough, Buzz and ZX-81 change your whole perspective on things with their IrDA Joystick Mod.
These two videos mark the first beta prototype of both the hardware and software. Buzz designed the PCB and programmed the PIC micro-controller, while ZX has coded up the PSP Magic and Pong demos.
Keep in mind: this mod only functions on PSP-1000 (Fat) models as it comes correct with an infrared port.
Here’s a video demonstration of PSP Magic and PSP Pong (written by Hardrive4u) modified to work with the IrDA joystick PCB –
ZX also mentions a cleaned up and more compact designed version with great new features, such as an integrated battery (AAA) pack, will be showcased soon.

Should you want to design your own, check Buzz’s site for PCB schematics, source code, and other documentation.

See this crazy calculator? Yeah, that’s right — the PSP has just replaced your TI-92, and if you don’t have one, you do now… ZX-81 has released a new version of his TI-92 calculator emulator: PSPXTI v1.3.0.

For those who haven’t seen previous versions, XTiger is a unix emulator (under X Window) of a TI-92 calculator (Texas instruments). It was originally written by Jonas Minnberg and was closed source. Jonas Minnberg has not worked on XTiger for quite a while and he gave Misha Nasledov the code and permission to GPL it.
PSPXTI v1.3.0 changes:
- New background images
- Add Load & Save states
- Text editor to write your own comments (or to read math courses)
- Finally fix issue with “Home -> Exit” & Sleep mode
- Add a new settings menu
