Rcomage v1.0.1 Released: Dump, Modify, and Compile PSP RCOs *Updated*

greg | October 26, 2009

Rcomage v1.0.1:

  • fix crash with WAV -> VAG conversion
  • fix sound clipping issues with WAV -> VAG conversion (fix appears to work, but I really haven’t looked at it much)
  • added ability for compile function to read from stdin
  • use \ for directory separators on Windows
  • slight speedup with gimconv (no longer invokes the cmd shell)
  • ‘–xml-only’ switch for dumping removed, use ‘–resdir -’ instead
  • fix bugs relating to handling XML files with resource dumping disabled
  • minor changes to messages
  • GUI will attempt to use relative paths instead of always relying on absolute paths
  • fix folder creation bug in GUI

Returning to the top of the PSP theming game is ZiNgA BuRgA with Rcomage v1.0.0. You have probably seen or used custom PSP themes created with this tool; however, its public release was postponed due to conflicting schedules, you know how it is…

ZiNgA notes –

…since this is a bit of a rushed release, there’s a number of “suboptimal” things done here, such as me not really checking stuff (so if you find issues, please report so I can fix). Sanity checking in the code really sucks, so it should be easy to stuff up the program too, but please still report these so that I know where to prioritise checks.

I reckon you should probably report issues via the source link.

It’s also mentioned that Rcomage, some day, will ultimately replace RCO Editor, another tool used for RCO manipulation. So if you wanna get your hands dirty and experiment with PSP theming; I suggest you check RCO Editor out too.

RCO Editor v1.15c Released

greg | October 28, 2007

PSP theming has sure come along way, and we can thank ZiNgA BuRgA for providing the necessary customization tools allowing various aspects of the XMB to be personalized. RCO Editor enables easy manipulation of localized resources (*.rco files) — icons, sounds, text, etc… Basically anything & everything that makes the XMB what it is.

Changes in 1.15c:

  • Fixed another bug in GIM conversion routine

Changes in 1.15b:

  • Fixed a bug in the decompression and GIM conversion routine

Changes in 1.15:

  • Rewrote GIM < -> BMP conversion routine
  • Dimension restrictions removed, as well as the “visible dimension” nonsense (RCO Editor automatically fixes that)
  • osk_utility.rco icons no longer cause crashes
  • Support for creating 4 bit and 32 bit GIMs (previously, only 8 bit supported) – effectively removing the 256 colour restriction
  • You can now use ICO, PNG and GIF files as inputs, in addition to 4 bit BMPs
  • Other minor changes and bug fixes
  • Added option to disable compressing resources – this is for some 3.7x RCOs not working properly with compression enabled

RCO Editor v1.14d Released

greg | June 11, 2007

ZiNgA BuRgA has released RCO Editor v1.14d. Easily customize your PSP to the fullest by manipulating various [decrypted] RCO files found in the PSP firmware — XMB icons, sounds, text, and so on… In order to decrypt RCO files you will require three things: 1) PSAR Dumper, 2) an official PSP firmware update, and 3) PBP Unpacker (to unpack “DATA.PSAR” from the update EBOOT).

Some recommendations:

Note, using FW 2.60 or earlier RCOs on higher firmware may cause glitches, such as icons not appearing to semi-bricking (eg using a FW2.50 topmenu_plugin.rco on FW3.1x).

Also note, ALWAYS keep a backup copy of the RCO, incase either you or the program stuffs something up. Don’t forget to keep a copy of your 3.xx RCO (assuming you’re on FW3.xx) as well!

RCO Editor v1.14d changelog:

  • Added option to disable .bak writing
  • Allow some resource adding to General and Text – note that this is incomplete and buggy
  • Other small bug fixes

I strongly encourage users to read through the always important ‘readme.txt’ before flashing anything.

RCO Editor v1.14b Released

greg | April 28, 2007

XMB Customization King, a.k.a the great ZiNgA BuRgA, has released RCO Editor v1.14b. RCO Editor is responsible for manipulating the PSP XMB interface. Using various .rco files found in flash memory, you’ll be able to replace icons, sounds (stereo and mono), text, and specific page data. Ideally you should use decrypted .rco files from FW 2.50 or 2.60; in fact, they _must_ be decrypted before you can actually alter them.

RCO Editor v1.14b changes:

  • Fixed minimize crash
  • Minor changes/bug fixes
  • Should now be fully compatible with the new decompressed 3.40 RCOs (note that the newer style GIMs support heights which aren’t a multiple of 8, however, RCO Editor will require replaced images to have a height which is a multiple of 8 to preserve compatibility with older versions)

RCO Editor v1.13 Released

greg | April 13, 2007

ZiNgA BuRgA has updated RCO Editor for those who can’t get enough of customizing their PSP’s XMB… Easily replace icons, sounds (both stereo and mono are supported), replace text, and modify some page data — all with a few simple clicks of the mouse. Of course you’re only able to modify decrypted RCO files. It’s recommended you use a 2.50 [here] or 2.60 [here] FW dump [here].

What’s new in v1.13?

  • Fixed a few bugs
  • Changed the way page resources are displayed
  • Finally got round to updating this readme!

I’m glad ZiNgA BuRgA mentioned ‘readme.txt’ — it contains very important usage information. I highly encourage you to read that before proceeding.

A quick update to ZiNgA BuRgA’s RCO Editor, and a quick post to share it with you all. RCO Editor v1.12b is merely a bug fix release which corrects the following:

  • Fixed the stupid bug which caused the app to crash when editing text

Thanks to Squidman for leaving that comment behind, and of course ZiNgA BuRgA for this awesome app.

See here (or scroll a few posts down) for more information regarding RCO Editor.

RCO Editor v1.12 Released

greg | March 11, 2007

ZiNgA BuRgA’s increasingly popular Windows application has been updated to v1.12. RCO Editor is a useful tool aiding in the latest XMB customization craze — swapping the various icons found in [decrypted] .rco firmware files. Feel free to read more about RCO Editor in this forum release thread, as well, fetch some custom XMB icons right here.

To have some fun, download a PSP firmware update and PBP Unpacker. Unpack the PBP begin opening .RCO files; you may stumble across some icons you never knew where customizable. FW 2.50 is preferred.

Be careful!

PSP RCO Editor v1.12

Firstly, this has ONLY BEEN TESTED ON 3.03 OE-C and 3.10 OE. I believe it _should_ work on all 2.71 SE and 3.0x OE.
For 3.10 OE, customized topmenu_plugin.rco files won’t work, but it seems that customizing other RCOs (eg opening_plugin.rco) still works.

RCO Editor v1.12 changes:

  • Fixed more bugs
  • Added a text search function
  • There’s now an “expert” mode (launch RCOEdit with the ‘expert’ command-line switch or edit the INI). This gives a few more options:
    • Access to Page/Anim resources – I’m not sure how these are exactly structured, but they are somewhat editable
    • Can change the visible dimensions on MIG resources
    • “Random Info” button just displays some, erm, random info

greg | March 2, 2007

Update: Scratch that, v1.11 is now available — see the download link below.

RCO Icon Editor v1.11 changes:

  • Fixed yet some more bugs, lol.
  • Added a Replace Multiple resources function (for MIG/VAG/OMG resources)
  • Many bugs fixed with VAG replacing
  • Now handles multiple channel (stereo) VAGs properly – you can also make stereo sounds too :)

ZiNgA BuRgA has updated the well sought-after RCO Icon Editor to v1.10… Contrary to this article’s post date, RCO Icon Editor v1.10 was actually released February 28th. Despite that, for those are aren’t avid PSP Hacks forum readers, here it is! Now you can have the most stylish PSP on the block by customizing any PSP XMB icon found in [decrypted] .rco firmware files.

RCO Icon Editor Screenshot

v1.10 changes:

  • Other slight changes

  • Name change
  • Padding is now disabled as it seems to have no effect any more :)

‘readme.txt’ contains very important information — read it carefully before proceeding!
