OpenBOR Maplevania: A Maplestory Meets Castlevania Beat ‘Em Up Mod
greg | August 27, 2009
One more bona fide OpenBOR mod by none other than NickyP… Maplevania, if you couldn’t guess by the name, is a cross between Maplestory and Castlevania. Choose among 3 available characters — Ethan Belmont, Claus Moriarti, or Amelia Delacroix — and beat the shit out of whoever crosses your path. It’s what OpenBOR is all about.

NickyP quotes –
This was sort of an idea that put itself together over time. I love Castlevania games and always wanted to do something in BOR about it. I love Maplestory’s sprites and always wanted to do something in BOR about it. It wasn’t until one day that a friend of mine showed me a screenshot of Maplestory, one of the players was holding a whip as a weapon. It was then that the light bulb in my head turned on, and Maplevania was born (thanks Rob)! It originally started out as a joke/parody mod, but as development went by I took it more seriously, and in my opinion it turned out pretty well!
Damn well indeed.

greg | July 28, 2009
The more mods, the merrier — especially this one… Today it’s all about NickyP and his new MegaMan inspired OpenBOR mod.
Inspired by the 8-bit Nintendo era and the Power Battle/Fighters arcade classic comes The Power War Episode 1. Here, let me quote Nick –
My idea for this mod was inspired by the MegaMan: Power Battle/Fighters games for the arcade. I had always wished they were 3 or 4 players instead of 2, so the original plan was to just make a remake of Power Battle/Fighters and have 4 player support. However, my love for everything 8-bit kicked in, and that’s when I decided I would instead remake all of the NES MegaMan games, with Power Battle/Fighters inspired gameplay. The result is, well, what you’re about to play in a few minutes!

Comments (9)OpenBOR v3.0 Build 2244a Released w/ SecurePAK Support
greg | April 24, 2009
Sitting comfortable at 2244a is the latest version of OpenBOR from developer SX. Most notably OpenBOR now supports SecurePAK mods. So what I suggest: playing Night Slashers X.
Be patient — she takes awhile to load.

OpenBOR v3.0 Build 2244a changes:
- Moved DebugInfo Option from video options to system options
- Added new option in System Options to Disable File Logging. Which improves load times if you are not concerned about log files and in-gameplay logging slowdown. Default Enabled.
- New Default CPU speed for PSP is 333 MHz
- SecurePAK is supported in the Build

Comments (7)OpenBOR v3.0 Build 2195 Released
greg | March 28, 2009
It’s been awhile since I’ve fired up OpenBOR, and an even longer time since PSP-Hacks covered it… But, after replaying the Splatterhouse mods I must tell you this — SX’s OpenBOR (Beat of Rage) is a must for anyone who appreciated Streets of Rage back in the SEGA Genesis days. And most importantly — SX released a new version of OpenBOR yesterday.

You can find some of the best OpenBOR mods at LavaLit, right here.
OpenBOR v3.0 Build 2195 changes:
- If only 1 pak file exists we skip menu.
- Increased size of sectors from 4096 to 8192. This should now allows pak files with long headers to load up. (Perhaps people are using directory/file names longer than 7 characters or really deep paths?!?)
- fixed: allow select was broken for player selection.
- fixed: PSP Menu file sorting caused an exception. We should pass by reference not a pointer.
- fixed: sound_unload_sample() was being used on a per frame basis. Since we cache samples and return indexes, this allows for samples to be shared. Hence we should unload them until we exit the engine.

Comments (14)OpenBOR v2.1134 Released
greg | December 10, 2007
SamuraiX has released a new version of the OpenBOR beat ‘em up engine. To coincide with SamuraiX’s OpenBOR v2.1134, uTunnel has created one uberly awesome mod — a remake of Golden Axe! It does however require a PSP Slim as the mod utilizes more than 20MB of memory for initialization & in-game play.

OpenBOR Engine Bug Fixes:
- Logs error when samples are missing and ignores them when trying to play missing samples.
- We now safely exit the engine when running out of memory. Check your log files for details.
OpenBOR Engine Updates:
- PSP Users, Modules/ctrlhook.prx is now required for Both Slim and Fat models. Modules/dvemgr.prx is only required for Slim. Delete your settings.sav file for PSP.
- New PSP commands:
- Home + Start restart OpenBOR.
- Home only now acts like escape key in windows.
- All Buttons are reprogrammable: Vol+, Vol-, Note, Screen and Hold switch.

Comments (13)OpenBoR v2.0049-029 Released
greg | October 13, 2006
Biff! Bam! Ka-pow! SamuraiX with a new version OpenBoR (Beats of Rage) — the BeatEm Up engine for the PSP.
Updates include:
- 2.71SE-A Compatible.
- Preview of paks in menu.
- Extra 4MBytes of OS space now utilized! (Thank You TyRaNiD over at pspdev.org)
- New Save System which now has slots for each difficulty mode. Old saves are no longer compatible!
- LogFile system has been upgraded. If a mod doesn’t run just check it at /Logs/OpenBorLog.txt
- A lot of bug fixes
Also mentioned:
As I have not finished adding new features to the official OpenBoR engine to make it v2.0050 I felt All of you PSP users would benefit with the extra memory.
So mods like X-Men (require more memory) should now have no problems with the extra memory.
Games or “mods” are typically distributed in PAK format — there are a few available here.
