greg | May 6, 2009

Board up your windows, ready your bunker, and be sure to equip your PSP — there’s a homebrew shit storm comin’ in hot. That’s right, with a maximum of 34 knots (or higher) is Team Typhoon with ChickHEN R2 — the Homebrew Enabler. And this time it ain’t no joke; R2 actually enables homebrew, for real.

ChickHEN R2 changes:

ChickHEN Homebrew Enabler Released: Homebrew on PSP-3000!

greg | May 6, 2009

Update: Ok, try this… It’s an unofficial fix from maibrithahn; re-download ChickHEN below. Apparently an official fix will be issued tomorrow.

Update: Well… I just tried it, and funny enough, it doesn’t work… You’re dumped into the HEN environment; however, homebrew is not enabled. After further investigation it seems I’m not the only one experiencing this. Stay tuned.

The slump is over PSP-3000 owners — Team Typhoon has released their much-anticipated Homebrew Enabler — ChickHEN R1.

ChickHEN takes advantage of MaTiAz’s discovered TIFF exploit enabling all styles of homebrew to be executed on PSP-1000, 2000, and now 3000 models. When ChickHEN is initialized it performs a kernel exploit and reboots the PSP into HEN mode; ChickHEN remains resident in memory allowing you to launch your homebrew from the XMB like it ain’t no thang.

What ChickHEN does NOT do:

  • Run ISO, CSO, or any other form of UMD backup
  • Run PSX Games
  • Touch The Flash
  • Allow the use of Custom Firmware
  • Load plugins

How to use ChickHEN:

  1. First off use the supplied TIFF image and place it in the PSP>PHOTO Directory.
  2. Copy h.bin over to the MS ROOT and safely remove device.
  3. Scroll over to the PHOTO icon on the XMB and click the ChickHEN folder and wait. (This will not work the first time, you may have to just use a method of loading that works for you but this is what we have found most efficient).
  4. If all goes well the screen should blank out and flash green showing that the HEN is loaded and all is well.
  5. Wait for your PSP to reboot and check your PSP’s system software. It should now display: “5.03 ChickHEN”.
  6. Scroll on over to GAME and enjoy some Homebrew!

Gin & Exploits

greg | January 13, 2009

With so much drama in the PSP scene, it’s hard knowing who’s who and from what regime… But, somehow, someway, Dark_AleX sets the record straight like every single day… And today: a little background info concerning this bit of news — the GripShift kernel mode exploit video…

To quote Dark_AleX himself –

This is about how I trusted someone called “miriam” and I gave him a kernel exploit of C+D, which was found by joek (the ONLY ONE that deserves credit of that), just to play for HIMSELF, as it is being used to decrypt 3k modules, but the first thing he did was to show to others to get a bit of fame.

Now i realize not to trust anyone anymore, thanks.

So here we are today, stuck in user-mode land while completely HEN-less.

Homebrew Enabler on the PSP-3000: User & Kernel Mode (Video Only)

greg | January 13, 2009

Watch or skip through this unnecessarily long video of Homebrew Enabler, enabling both user and kernel mode homebrew on the PSP-3000 [EUR GripShift] –

Ok, so again… No release. Not yet anyway… The Google (French to English) translation reads something close to this –

This version of HEN-A (Homebrew Enabler) enables user and kernel mode homebrew, including those that emulate the UMD, better known as ISO loaders. Installing and using a custom firmware isn’t going to happen yet — you know, because of the pre-IPL business… And sadly, for the moment, the pspgen team isn’t going to release their work in hopes to prevent Sony from patching the exploit so quickly. With that said, the development team is looking for more loopholes before it’s made public.

Whether it’s pspgen or someone else, we’ll likely have something usable real soon. So find yourself a copy of the GripShift UMD and do not update should Sony spring a new firmware version upon us.

FW 3.11 HEN & Upgrader/Downgrader Released

greg | September 9, 2007

It was promised quite awhile ago, but here it is — a working firmware 3.11 homebrew enabler (HEN) & downgrader — as Noobz put it, “a solution to help people trapped on firmware 3.11 by Sony’s dirty tricks”. With that said, welcome to the new era of homebrew and custom firmwares, young Padawan learners. Note: you still require a UMD copy of Lumines.

As you may know, if you have a TA-082/TA-086 motherboard , then if you downgraded your PSP to v1.50, its idstorage keys will have been patched during downgrading to avoid bricking. The latest official Sony firmwares (3.30 onwards) detect this patch, and refuse to allow you to upgrade. Without a hardware solution, this can leave you trapped on v3.11 firmware, with no way to upgrade, and no way to downgrade.

Everything you need to know is in README.TXT.

Thanks for sticking to your guns, Fanjita and Noobz. And of course props to Dark_AleX for his HEN code.
