N00bz! eLoader Update

greg | April 20, 2009

You know that eLoader you’ve been waiting for? Well the wait is over, ‘cuz it ain’t coming out. But it’s for the best, just as [one of] the best in the game puts it, Fanjita –

On the one hand, I have to congratulate MaTiAz and Davee for their recent excellent work on the TIFF exploit and HEN. Their project is exciting, and I’m sure we’re all waiting with excitement for their upcoming release. It shows that the PSP homebrew scene has not been defeated by Sony’s latest efforts, and long may the spirit of competition continue. It’s also nice to see so much cooperation within the community. Great stuff.

But on the other hand, this obsoletes the work we were doing on an eLoader for the GripShift exploit – there’s no need for it, since the TIFF exploit should work on all PSPs, with or without the game. We’ve worked hard on it, but so many busy events in our lives (parenting, moving house, pressures of work in the current economic climate) have meant that progress was slower than we’d hoped.

So that’s that. Good lookin’ out Fanjita/N00bz.

Team N00bz on The Sparta Exploit

greg | January 8, 2009

It is indeed exploit fever season, and the remedy — more N00bz! That’s right — the N00bz have combined forces with MaTiAz and FreePlay to help further expand on the recent “Sparta” (GripShift) exploit. The plan:

Our initial focus will be to make it easier to run standard homebrew via this exploit, by adapting eloader to it. This will be restricted purely to user-mode homebrew, since there is currently no public kernel-mode exploit that could be used here, and compatibility is likely to be patchy due to the security measures in the later firmwares which make determining all the syscalls almost impossible. Still, you can expect that at least some emulators and other popular pure user-mode homebrew will run.

So with that said, don’t get too excited for a downgrader solution yet. In the case of someone discovering a method to bust kernel mode wide open, then downgrading via Sparta could very well be possible.

eLoader v1.000 Released!

greg | September 16, 2007

Ah, ha! Awesome! Gotta love them Noobz… Today they have released eLoader v1.0. It’s primarily for PSP Slim owners running M33’s custom firmware… As detailed by the Noobz themselves:

I know that a lot will probably wonder what the use of this is now that we have Pandora out so that anyone can downgrade, well the main reason is the PSP-Lite. As a lot of people are finding out the PSP Lite is unable to run 1.50 kernel, this means that old homebrew games are not able to run on the PSP Lite custom firmware, however eLoader makes it possible to run some of these older games without needing to recompile them. So I hope all you new PSP Lite owners enjoy getting to see some of the old homebrew games running on the new device.

So there you have it. Enjoy 1.50 kernel-enabled homebrew on your new PSP Slim. Thanks Noobz!

eLoader 0.995 “Kriek” Released

greg | November 15, 2006

It’s no Becks, but it is Kriek, and it’s awesome! Firmware 2.80 users will be happy to know Kriek supports… *sips his Becks* ah… forget it, here’s the changelog from the Noobz website:

  1. The biggie – support for v2.80 firmware. v2.80 is still only user-mode support, and there are some minor syscalls that can’t be resolved. But in general, the vast majority of user-mode homebrew works fine.
  2. Another biggie – this release includes an experimental new way of using eLoader, called xLoader. xLoader allows you to run homebrew directly from the PSP’s XMB menu, just like on a v1.0 PSP. Usage is a lot like Dark Alex’s HEN C, but the underlying technology is very different. Because it’s experimental, and a lot of work to fix up for each firmware, it’s currently only supported for v2.80 firmware, and compatibility is a little lower than standard eLoader. Make sure to view the README file (displayed during installation) for more information.
  3. You can now use the power switch to enter suspend mode in any homebrew that normally supports suspend mode on v1.5 firmware. This works in eLoader on firmwares 2.5-2.71, and in xLoader.
  4. The built-in PSP on-screen keyboard now works in xLoader.
  5. The Installotron is now included in the eLoader installation, so that in principle, you may never need to manually install any homebrew ever again. Installotron also now includes an option to automatically modify EBOOTs to make
    them suitable for xLoader.
  6. Stability and compatibility is mostly improved over v0.99, although some homebrew is less stable, especially on v2.00 firmware. You may want to keep 0.99 and 0.995 side-by-side on firmwares that can run both.

Beautiful! Now, download it, and enjoy! The README covers the remaining details.

eLoader “Marzenbier” v0.9.9 Released

greg | September 21, 2006

As mentioned earlier this morning, “…reports that a new version of eLoader is making its way to prime time, more on that soon.,” and now here it is — the latest installment of the intoxicating eLoader! v0.9.9, dubbed “Marzenbier,” has been released by none other than the fabulous group of Noobz.

Quoted from their website:

The major new feature is support for v2.70 and v2.71 firmwares. That’s right, full support for these 2 firmwares is now added, using a new kernel-mode syscall-finding technique (which is why 2.80 support is not yet possible).

As well as support for the v2.7 firmwares, there is also limited kernel mode support on v2.5-v2.71. This means that the .init program section (which contains functions declared with the ‘constructor’ attribute) will be called in kernel-mode for homebrew built with the kernel mode attribute. Note that you cannot create kernel-mode threads from the init functions in this release, due to security checks in the firmware.

The increased kernel access has also allowed us to add a built-in exception handler to eLoader, so that crashes can be caught and debugged more easily, as well as usually preventing the need to reboot.

Congratulations on this fine release Noobz.

Get’down!

eLoader “Porter” 0.9.8 Released

greg | September 5, 2006

Another glorious day in the homebrew community with the latest release of eLoader v0.9.8, code-named “Porter.” Mmmm porter…

Written by the gifted developers of “Noobz,” Porter (eLoader v0.9.8) brings user-mode homebrew to FW 2.0 – 2.60 without the need for Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. As quoted from the README:

This program builds on the work done by Saotome to load homebrew EBOOT.PBPs into PSPs with v2.00-v2.60 firmware, using the TIFF exploit, or on v2.00, v2.01, 2.5 and 2.6 using the GTA exploit.

It currently cannot run all known homebrew, but it uses a number of tricks to get substantially further than ever before.

Known limitations are:

  • Can’t run kernel-mode applications.
That means anything that emulates ISOs/UMDs.
  • Some minor system calls are still unsupported

And what does the future of eLoader hold? (currently in development):

  • A user-mode loader for v2.70 and v2.71.
  • A user-mode loader for v2.80.
  • A loader to support kernel-mode homebrew on those platforms where it is possible.
  • A way to do away with eLoader altogether, and load homebrew directly from the XMB.

In the meantime, sip your smuttynose & enjoy this fine release!

eLoader with USB for FW 2.50/2.60!

greg | July 31, 2006

Originally developed by Fanjita and Ditlew, and without a doubt one of the most downloaded homebrew apps, comes eLoader with USB support – courtesy of 0okm. Now while you’re in eLoader you can create a USB connection between your PC and PSP granting the ability to transfer files to & from without rebooting back to the XMB. This is great news for those left unable to downgrade (due to the TA-082 PCB) and experience the wonders of 1.50! Thanks 0okm!

To get this running simply start eLoader as normal and execute “USB for eLoader GTA” – afterwards you can toggle USB mode by pressing Triangle.

eLoader Alternative 0.9.7 to “Bock”e

Josh | April 4, 2006

Fanjita has today release an alternative version of the eLoader 0.9.7 called “Bock”. His release is in response to the number of people who complained about the original release of “Bock”. I have personally tried this on my PSP with firmware version 2.60 that took an extremely long time to load up the eLoader with the initial release of “Bock”, after installing the “Bock” alternative my problems were solved. The update is the same (still has wifi support) except for the menu caching that was causing problems for some users.

Below is the excerpt from fanjita.org:

A lot of people have been having problems with the Bock release, especially on v2.0 PSPs. These problems seem to be mostly due to the menu, so we’ve packaged a version of the release that uses the old menu. This will also be better for people who have had a problem with the file list caching feature.

Apart from the menu, this version is identical to the standard Bock release, including all the wifi support. You can download this release in the usual two flavours: Auto-Installer for Windows, or ZIP file for other platforms. Please also look at the README file, it has lots of useful information.

Thanks for the update Fanjita!

eLoader v0.9.7 — Bock

Gary13579 | April 1, 2006

Haha Fanjita, thanks for scaring half of the PSP community to death. At least you came back bearing gifts!
Fanjita and Ditlew have just released a new version of their eLoader, a way to play homebrew on 2.0-2.6 firmwares. As always, they have chosen a beer name for it. This time the name is Bock.
This new edition of the eLoader may not be as tasty as Bock is, but it is definetly as useful. They have gotten WiFi to work on all firmwares! That means if you are a 2.0 user, you no longer need to use that nasty hack to get WiFi working, and if you are above 2.0, you can use all the WiFi homebrew for the first time!
