Wolfenstein 3D v5.1 Beta Released

greg | September 19, 2008

From ‘92 to ‘08 — it’s still Wolfenstein 3D. The classic first person shooter is still alive and enjoyed by many worldwide; much thanks to developers Zack and Chilly Willy for that. So go find yourself a copy of the original game and attempt escaping the Nazi stronghold — now on your PlayStation Portable. The shareware version works too.

Wolfenstein 3D Gameloader Screenshot

Wolfenstein 3D v5.1 beta changes:

  • Re-Wrote Gameloader so it doesn’t use fixed paths. You can now put Wolf_3D in any game folder. – Zack.
  • Full re-write of Gameloader. No music or sound effects and faster game selection (+ smaller download size as a result). – Zack.
  • Added “Confirm” option to Gameloader. It now confirms you want to load the game so if you press it by mistake on the wrong game you don’t have to reset to XMB and start over. – Zack.
  • Save/Load bug fixed (we think). – Chilly Willy.
  • Music now plays at tempo most remember it at. – Zack.
  • Difficulty selection bug fixed. – Zack.

Wolfenstein 3D v5.0 Released

greg | August 18, 2008

Step foot into Blazkowicz’s boots and take pleasure in ridding Nazi scum with Zack’s newly released version of Wolfenstein 3D. The classic first person shooter has never looked or sounded better on your PlayStation hand held.

So crisp and so clean — Zack notes we can thank Chilly Willy for the improved music/sound — both are running perfect. As well, no more save corrupted messages and fewer; if not, zero (0) crashes.

If you’re sporting the floppy disk version of Wolfenstein 3D, you’ll need to apply the included (W3D – Floppy Version Patch.zip) floppy disk patch. The guide, FAQ, and other documentation are packaged within. Enjoy.

PSPUAE 0.72 Released: Amiga Emulator Updated

greg | August 14, 2008

Amiga advocate and respected PSPUAE beta tester, Raventyr, just sent word concerning the team’s latest release — the Ubiquitous Amiga Emulator version 0.72.

Released by FOL and Chilly Willy; PSPUAE 0.72 aims to gain extra speed while correcting a few audio-related issues. And of course 0.72 packs other bug fixes as well.

James Pond Amiga Screenshot

PSPUAE 0.72 changes:

  • Dumped all sound bar stereo, in an attempt to gain speed
  • Corrected Makefile error, which lost us some speed
  • Add CYCLE_UNIT as option, setting is either 512 (Normal) or 256 (Turbo)
  • Add Chipset CYCLE_UNIT as a hidden auto switch option, that switches with CPU CYCLE_UNIT option
  • Fixed screen going off center when switching off auto zoom and when selecting 4:3
  • Add lock for new CPU option, stops accidentally pressing option and invoking a hard reset
  • Add config option checking to check cycle_unit, screen position, cpu lock and sound delay for old config files
  • Add SOUND_DELAY option, this allows us to switch between 1 and 9 ms. (9 ms does speed things up, but causes sound to breakup a little)
  • Add Hard Reset to Main Menu
  • Add Hard Reset when PSPUAE hits “Fetch Error” (stops fetch crash/loop if Cycles set wrong after loading config)
  • Altered Cycle Turbo, CPU Chipset timing to higher value (only when using Turbo Cycles)
  • Dumped Sound Optimize as it did very little and caused crash
  • Fix Audio Event time
  • Fix Audio delay (FOL, added this as an option, so a few more FPS could be gained at the expense of the audio quality).
  • Fix Home Button Exit crash, if you were in PSPUAE menu.
  • When cycle unit is changed, pspuae will hard reset instantly
  • If KickStart 1.3 is not found it will look for any other kickstart, with the following name format, KICK205, KICK30 etc etc. If none are found, PSPUAE will exit to PSP XMB

Basilisk II 1.1.0 for the PSP

greg | July 23, 2008

Equip your soon-to-be MacOS-enabled hand held… Quickly following the release of Test 20, J.F. — better known as Chilly Willy ’round these parts — has officially unveiled Basilisk II 1.1.0 for the PSP.

Basilisk II for the PSP

Allow me to reiterate the Basilisk II PSP features:

  • Emulates a Mac II series machine running OS 7.0.1 through 8.1, depending on the ROM used.
  • Uses UAE CPU emulation, with new SoftFloat FPU emulation for better compatibility.
  • The PSP memstick can be mounted on the Mac desktop (requires File Manager 1.2).
  • Supports on-the-fly change of colors and resolution (requires Display Manager).
  • Has stereo, 16-bit, 44kHz audio (requires Sound Manager 3.0).
  • Supports emulated floppy and CDROM with removable media (no CD audio yet).
  • Supports up to four hardfiles for use as fixed drives.
  • UDP tunnel for AppleTalk networking across WIFI (no general networking yet).
  • Emulates a Mac Extended ADB keyboard and mouse. Buttons can be remapped on-the-fly, and popular IR keyboards are supported on the Phat PSP.
  • Supports extra memory and TV out on the Slim PSP.

The official release comes very well documented. I suggest reading the PDF should you have any questions or issues. Both the binary and source archive are packaged in 7-zip format; Google that if you’re unsure how to extract the contents.

Kudos Chilly Willy, terrific work.

Rise of the Triad v1.01 Released

greg | June 19, 2008

Way back when Deniska ported one of the dopest and bloodiest first-person shooters to the PSP. The game: Rise of the Triad. It’s a classic from the mid-90’s you likely played on your blazing fast 80486.

But that was yesterday and this is today.

Today Chilly Willy has taken the port rewriting the video to support SDL. With that said, Rise of the Triad is now playable using the Slim’s TV out, as well you’ll notice the proper pitch on sound effects. So cheers to that!

Rise of the Triad Screenshot

ROTT v1.01 changes:

  • Updated for *current* SDK/Toolchain.
  • Uses new SDL with TV support. Just hold the TRIANGLE button when you start the game from the XMB.
  • New SDL also fixes the pitch problem with the sound effects.
  • Uses SDL_mixer for playing the music again.
  • Bundled with mini-instruments for much better music while still keeping the size reasonable.
  • Changed a couple of the default key mappings for changing weapons and setting the gamma.

Note: You need to replace the sawwave.pat file in the mini directory with the one in the archive (sawwave.zip). Although they are the same size, the one in the game archive slows the system down when playing. The replacement instrument does not.
