PSP IRDA JOY Mod v2.1

greg | June 10, 2009

You may remember reading this a couple months back, or maybe you don’t… Perhaps your memories are a bit fuzzy, after all it happened on 4/20. But whatever the case — watch…

Buzz’s IRDA Joy Box Project is the reverse scenario of FuSa GamePad; instead of using your PSP as a new joystick/gamepad on the PC, you’re using an old DB9 joystick (Atari, Amiga, Amstrad, etc…) on your PSP-1000. That little black box takes care of all the dirty work.

The box uses the IRDA port of your PSP-1000. You need two AA batteries to power it and once everything is set, you’ll be rocking the emulators with your old school joystick, such as PSPHUGO, PSPCAP32, or PSP2600.

IrDA Joystick Mod/Hack for the PSP-1000

greg | April 20, 2009

When emulating all those old-school joystick-enabled consoles using only the standard set of PSP controls isn’t enough, Buzz and ZX-81 change your whole perspective on things with their IrDA Joystick Mod.

These two videos mark the first beta prototype of both the hardware and software. Buzz designed the PCB and programmed the PIC micro-controller, while ZX has coded up the PSP Magic and Pong demos.

Keep in mind: this mod only functions on PSP-1000 (Fat) models as it comes correct with an infrared port.

Here’s a video demonstration of PSP Magic and PSP Pong (written by Hardrive4u) modified to work with the IrDA joystick PCB –

ZX also mentions a cleaned up and more compact designed version with great new features, such as an integrated battery (AAA) pack, will be showcased soon.

Should you want to design your own, check Buzz’s site for PCB schematics, source code, and other documentation.
