BreakOut4PSP v0.7 Released
greg | June 24, 2009
For anyone who just can’t get enough of the classic game of Breakout, here’s another [French] one… Geecko’s BreakOut4PSP stays true to the original Breakout look ‘n feel — bust bricks, collect power-ups… This is Geecko’s first homebrew game, and with that said, it currently lacks a couple things — a scoring system, sound, etc… After all — it’s a work in progress.

We have a few other Breakout clones, in English too; Check ‘em out here.

Comments (2)Homebrew from Art: Powernoid V4e & Audio Mechanica V8d Released
greg | February 10, 2009
Two quality homebrews consolidated into one post; it’s Art’s Powernoid & Audio Mechanica…
Powernoid is the Breakout clone modeled after Amiga’s MegaBall, which also inspired DX-Ball for Windows. You know what that’s all about — keep the ball in motion, bust bricks, and collect power-ups, minus the bad ones.
Audio Mechanica is a digital audio recorder for the PSP. You know, like the commercial, “where did I park my car? Oh no… Blue section, row 18.” You will however require another piece of hardware; Audio Mechanica supports any Socom compatible headset with PSP headphone remote control, the Go!Cam (Chotto Cam), and the Talkman USB microphone.

Playing Breakout under emulation just not doing it for ya? Enter Art’s Powernoid; a Breakout clone with power-ups based on MegaBall for the Amiga. So get it while it’s hot — V4d is tagged as the final release.
Say what, Breakout? Well, the game of Breakout serves a very simple concept: use the bottom paddle to bounce the ball in attempt to bust up layers of bricks, all while collecting various power-ups throughout. Advance on and get down; Powernoid is highly addictive.

Powernoid V4d changes:
- Fixed bug that prevented stages from repeating after stage 15.
- Added option to toggle in game music with up and down buttons.

Comments (2)Powernoid V3b Released *Updated*
greg | December 3, 2008
Update: Quick, get Powernoid V3b –
- Fixed control of ball direction with the bat which was broken in a previous release.
MegaBall, Breakout, Brick or Ice Breaker, whatever the name, welcome Art’s Powernoid V3. Same concept, same addictive game play: bounce a ball or multiple balls destroying all rectangular shaped objects while collecting power-ups and exercising those reflex skills.

Powernoid V3 changes:
- Improved collision detection by checking the edge of the ball in the direction it is traveling.
- Bat movement made slightly faster, and ball turns red when fireball powerup is active.
- Added powerups to two more stages so every odd stage now has a powerup available.
- Change made to second ball behaviour in multiball mode.
- Change to high score encryption so the save file is incompatible with previous version.

I’ve spent and still spend countless hours playing the arcade classic known as Super Breakout. So when I saw Art coded up a Breakout clone in a mere 2 days time, I nearly… Well, I’ll leave that to your imagination ‘cuz I got nothing right now. All I have to say; while other Breakout homebrew clones do exist — Art, you deserve mad props for this one.

Comments (16)Galactic Breakout v0.1 Demo

I intended to post this earlier, but after having recently developed an addiction to Brick Breaker on my Blackberry, this new homebrew game captured my attention quite easily. Finally being able to put my PSP aside for a moment, I’m proud to present… (probably deserves a drum roll) The Underminer’s Galactic Breakout! A game that truly resembles the arcade classic. Bust bricks, collect power-ups, cash, weaponry, you name it — just don’t miss the ball on its way back down!
The demo includes 20 out of 70 levels; the remaining 50 aren’t ready yet, but will be available in the [free] full version. Galactic Breakout also features a story mode, level editor, and online rankings.

Doesn’t get any cooler than that. My word.

Comments (9)Breakout PSP v0.1
greg | March 10, 2006
Andorien has released his first Sony PSP homebrew game, Breakout PSP v0.1 – an adaptation of the classic game Breakout, written in C++.

Rules are simple: move the d-pad or analog stick left/right to control the paddle – bounce the ball and destroy all the blocks in order to advance to the next level.
There are a few known issues which I’ve quoted from Andorien:
Currently, due to the way that the paddle is responding to collision (only changing the y axis velocity), it’s possible to trap the puck within the paddle. It’s not a huge issue, just know that if that happens, the puck will bounce up and down really fast, and if it’s released out of one of the sides, it might as well be random which Y direction it will go.
Also, it seems that if you keep playing over and over (reloading the level again and again), the game will eventually freeze. You can hit the home button and attempt to go back to the menu, but at that point the system will crash. I think I’m getting a buffer overflow, since each time the level loads, it must reload all of the images. However, I don’t know how to clear the buffer, so if anyone could point me in the right direction, I’d very much appreciate it.
I personally have not tested this on 2.0+ yet; please feel free to do so and leave your comments below.
