Industry Gamers have an interesting article concerning the state of Sony and their PSP business. In a recent conversation with Rob Dyer, SCEA Senior Vice President of Publisher Relations, he says it like this:
I think we had a great lineup last year. The biggest problem that plagued PSP was piracy; we have not been able to slow that down. We think we have some answers going forward, but we’re not ready to talk about that publicly at this point. So we’re working on fixing that, because that’s been a big problem. Publishers, when they put out good games, are not getting the same sales results that they got a few years back. So piracy’s been a big issue and we’re working on that very diligently to bring about some solutions.
Wait a minute… What do you mean you haven’t been able to slowdown piracy? The PSP-3000 isn’t [fully] hacked yet; you can’t play ISOs on that if you’re running firmware later than 5.03, which I’m sure many are. No ISOs for the PSPgo either. I’d say later firmwares seem pretty solid in terms of hackability or downgrading, short of those save game user mode exploits, which haven’t lead to any piracy yet. What firmware version are PSPs shipped with nowadays anyway? Hell, Sony even introduced the mandatory online registration for games like SOCOM FTB 3. So I think, for now, you’ve no doubt pumped the piracy break. And PSP-Hacks will be the first to say it: good job.
Furthermore, Dyer goes on:
We still have a very robust lineup this year from third parties on the PSP, starting with Metal Gear Peace Walker. I won’t go through the whole lineup because I want our third-party partners to make those announcements, but there are some big, big titles coming out this year and you’ll see those announcements at GDC, DPS (Destination PlayStation) or E3.
Big titles eh? Oooh, can’t wait to download ‘em all! Jokes — I support the game developers and you should too. We don’t condone piracy; but hey, if you’re a starving student who loves video gaming, we understand. Oh, and see you at E3 in June!
Needless to say, Dyer didn’t comment on any PSP2 speculation.
What do you think: Big things poppin’ for Sony and the PSP in 2010?
