Game Music Gear MX v1.4 Released

greg | February 24, 2010

Inspired by the awesomeness that is Winamp and XMMS is gama’s Game Music Gear MX. This particular audio player supports just about every format imaginable. It also incorporates an input/output plugin system giving you the ability to add (or remove) and convert audio formats. The visualizer support is pretty dope too. Check README—it covers everything you need to know.

Game Music Gear MX Screenshot

Considering we’re Game Music Gear virgins, we’ll showcase the complete feature list instead of the 1.4 changes.

Game Music Gear MX Features:

  • GMG_MX uses a new plugin system. There are three types of plugins. Input Plugins for audio decoding (like mp3 plugin, spc plugin, etc), Output Plugins to encode audio to another format, and the Visual Plugins for music visualization, lyrics display, etc. Very similar to the Winamp plugins. Each plugin consist of a config file (.plugin) and a module file (.prx). And can be replaced or removed if you want to upgrade or disable a plugin.
  • Custom Skin Support – Please read the skins.README and see the skins found in the skins folder if you want to make a new one.
  • Mini Visualizer – There are two mini visualizers available, spectrum and wave, inspired by the ones found in winamp.
  • Chinnese GBK, BMP, TrueType and pgf font support, with LATIN and UTF8 support.
  • Zip, Rar, 7zip and gzip files support through the File_Extractor library by Shay Green. Rar and 7zip support is only available on the PSP Slim due to memory requirements.
  • In game configuration screen.
  • Control keys configuration – You can configure it through the config menu, or you can do it manually editing the ‘keys’ file.
  • Three levels of audio output amplification, configured in each plugin config file. Since version 1.3 this levels are fixed to +3, +6 and +9 dB.
  • Built in 10 Band Real Time Equalizer with presets support.

OpenBOR Mod: Phantasy Star II+IV Demo

greg | February 24, 2010

NickyP in the place to be with an all-new OpenBOR mod. You know his work — MegaMan: The Power War, Maplevania, and there may be others we’ve missed. Anyway, we’re covering this one: Phantasy Star II+IV. It’s a demo.

OpenBOR: Phantasy Star Mod

Phantasy Star II+IV isn’t your traditional side-scrolling beat ‘em up game. The Phantasy Star sprites are a cross between 3rd and 1st person, which introduced a challenge when using the OpenBOR engine. Nevertheless — NickyP pulled it off and the end result is pretty awesome. I was never a fan of Phantasy Star turn-based combat, but this real-time action puts a whole new perspective on things. I recommend you check it out.

OpenBOR for Windows and PSP are included. Extract the archive and copy the “PS2n4(demo).PAK” file to the appropriate “Paks” directory. Enjoy!

Sony on PSP Piracy and ‘Big, Big Titles’ This Year

greg | February 23, 2010

Industry Gamers have an interesting article concerning the state of Sony and their PSP business. In a recent conversation with Rob Dyer, SCEA Senior Vice President of Publisher Relations, he says it like this:

I think we had a great lineup last year. The biggest problem that plagued PSP was piracy; we have not been able to slow that down. We think we have some answers going forward, but we’re not ready to talk about that publicly at this point. So we’re working on fixing that, because that’s been a big problem. Publishers, when they put out good games, are not getting the same sales results that they got a few years back. So piracy’s been a big issue and we’re working on that very diligently to bring about some solutions.

Wait a minute… What do you mean you haven’t been able to slowdown piracy? The PSP-3000 isn’t [fully] hacked yet; you can’t play ISOs on that if you’re running firmware later than 5.03, which I’m sure many are. No ISOs for the PSPgo either. I’d say later firmwares seem pretty solid in terms of hackability or downgrading, short of those save game user mode exploits, which haven’t lead to any piracy yet. What firmware version are PSPs shipped with nowadays anyway? Hell, Sony even introduced the mandatory online registration for games like SOCOM FTB 3. So I think, for now, you’ve no doubt pumped the piracy break. And PSP-Hacks will be the first to say it: good job.

Furthermore, Dyer goes on:

We still have a very robust lineup this year from third parties on the PSP, starting with Metal Gear Peace Walker. I won’t go through the whole lineup because I want our third-party partners to make those announcements, but there are some big, big titles coming out this year and you’ll see those announcements at GDC, DPS (Destination PlayStation) or E3.

Big titles eh? Oooh, can’t wait to download ‘em all! Jokes — I support the game developers and you should too. We don’t condone piracy; but hey, if you’re a starving student who loves video gaming, we understand. Oh, and see you at E3 in June!

Needless to say, Dyer didn’t comment on any PSP2 speculation.

What do you think: Big things poppin’ for Sony and the PSP in 2010?

PSPUAE v0.80 BETA Released; Updated Amiga Emulator

greg | February 21, 2010

It’s been along time coming, and still my #1 personal top pick: PSPUAE — the PSP Ubiquitous Amiga Emulator.

Released by FOL, PSPUAE v0.80 BETA features preliminary AGA (Advanced Graphics Architecture) support. AGA was introduced with the Amiga 1200 and 4000 models.

Sorry I couldn’t pull off the Barbarian decapitation on video. The game play is much too slow when using RemoteJoy. Without that enabled it plays smooth though. I recommend you download Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior. It’s awesome. Configure “Joystick 0″ to act on the Analog Stick; swing up and 360 the analog nub around pressing fire (X) at the right time. You’ll get it. Press F1 to get a 1-player game going.

Anyway, back to PSPUAE v0.80: don’t expect great speeds with AGA enabled, so says FOL…

Still needs alot of work (so don’t expect great speeds). I will try to make more time to get it working better, still need sound sorted and HDD support.

To use AGA at the moment, you need to select it on first boot under quick start configuration. I am aware that the menu is screwed up…

Download both the Amiga emulator and Amiga Kickstart rom below. Install PSPUAE like any other homebrew. Rename the Kickstart 1.3 rom to “kick13.rom” and copy that to the PSP/GAME/PSPUAE/KICKS directory. Game disks are typically distributed in adf format and they’re copied to the DISKS directory. Start PSPUAE and press select to open the main menu.

There is no read me included with this release. If you’re unsure about things, refer to the PSPUAE documentation right here.

Thanks FOL!

Oreille: A Ruby Written IRC Client

greg | February 20, 2010

Mon ouïe’s Oreille: It’s not the most practical IRC client; however, it’s the first app I’ve seen written using Kode’s Joyau (Ruby interpreter) as the underlying framework. So if you’re looking to learn Ruby by example then this is probably a better means to an end. And if you’re looking to actually IRC from your handheld, I recommend ZX-81’s PSPIRC client.

You’ll likely need or want to change configuration settings in the “config.rb” file. Open that up and take a look. If your WiFi connection fails, check the “access_id” line. Set that to the appropriate value; think if the saved connections were a numbered list. Again, it’s not the user-friendliest experience, but it’s a great way to learn something.

WIP: MegaMan 8-bit DeathMatch

greg | February 19, 2010

Tell me this doesn’t look awesome: CutmanMike’s MegaMan 8-bit Deathmatch (MM8BDM) — online! There is no scheduled release date; however, it’s actively being developed and it’s clear great progress has been made thus far.

To quote CutmanMike –

Megaman 8-bit Deathmatch is a new multiplayer mod that aims to puts Doom and Megaman into a blender and spew out a fun new way to blast your buddies online. I’ve always wanted to make a Megaman themed wad, and since my experimental multiplayer wad GVH wasn’t a complete flop, I decided to make it deathmatch based. The 8-bit style inspired by Kinsie was perfect for this, as it represents the time when I feel Megaman was in full fruition: on the NES.

Megaman 8-bit Deathmatch will play as if Megaman suddenly turned 3D. Everything will play as if it was being played back in 1987. Levels will use purely 8-bit textures and sprites. Megaman will jump high and take damage recoil. Weapons will behave almost exactly as they did back then, only from a 3d perspective. The plan is to eventually have all the levels and weapons from Megaman 1-6 (and maybe 9). Obviously some weapons will have minor changes because there are a lot of clones throughout the series.
