PSPoste Beta 7 Released — PSP Email Client

greg | October 11, 2008

One year in the making — PSPoste Beta 7. Well maybe not a straight year of development, but it’s been a solid 365+ days since we last saw a PSPoste update, coincidentally from last year’s Canadian thanksgiving weekend to this one.

Beta 7 stems from the original PSPoste team — David, Ben, and Sajeeth — with props to ZX-81 for his iR keyboard/PSPSSH contribution.

PSPoste Message Window Screenshot

PSPoste was the first and remains the only fully functional email client for the PlayStation Portable. Yes, I’m now convinced it’s the one and only. It supports SMTP and POP3 protocols, provides a skinnable user interface, iR keyboard support for PSP Fat owners, as well as other usable input methods for the rest of us.

AFKIM v3.3.7 Released — Away From Keyboard Instant Messenger Updated

greg | October 11, 2008

While perhaps being mobile and away from your keyboard, allow AFKIM to put you right back in front of one — Away From Keyboard Instant Messenger (AFKIM) version 3.3.7. It’s a minor release from ZX-81, –

AFKIM

The server im.bitlbee.org is down and it doesn’t appear even in DNS. Unfortunately it is the default Bitlbee server used by afkim and there is no way to create a new account using afkim in any other Bitlbee server. (You have to do it by yourself using any IRC client).

In this new version of afkim you can specify in afkim.cfg file the public Bitlbee server / port you want to connect to. The afkim.cfg file try now to connect you to im.codemonkey.be when using a new account (you have to rename or remove the bitlbee.cfg file first).

Well that explains it.

DarkCheat v3.0 Released

greg | October 8, 2008

We take pleasure in variety, especially us men. Maybe women too; should Heidi Fleiss’ stud farm be any indication… Well, the same rules apply when it comes to homebrew — ergo, the release of DarkCheat.

Satyrlus’ DarkCheat is a similar homebrew/PRX combo to weltall’s CWCHEAT. Cheat each and every PSP title, find or create your own cheats by viewing/dumping custom memory ranges, as well DarkCheat carries out other useful day-to-day functions… That’s all detailed in the readme.

DarkCheat is compatible with CWCHEAT, NitePR, and Cheat Master formatted cheats. Enjoy!

PSPdisp v0.1 — use your PSP Screen as an Additional Monitor

greg | October 7, 2008

JJS.@ has something funky fresh just waiting for you to download — that’s PSPdisp. It’s like RemoteJoyLite — only the opposite. PSPdisp extends your Windows desktop using the PSP display as an additional or second monitor at a 960×544 resolution. Watch and learn.

There are four components working together, on Windows a display driver, a USB driver and the interface application which captures the screen, compresses it and sends it over USB to the PSP. On the PSP side there is an application that decompresses the frames and displays them. All settings are adjustable from the Windows side, the PSP really only acts as a passive display.

(includes Windows installer, drivers, PSP binary, source, etc…)

Much thanks to moditripit and PiercedDooD for the tip.

PSPMSX v1.4.0: MSX/MSX2/MSX2+ Emulator Updated

greg | October 7, 2008

This past weekend ZX-81 released an update to his popular MSX emulator. For those who haven’t heard, bird isn’t the word — PSPMSX is. Most notably PSPMSX version 1.4.0 incorporates a cheating and memory monitoring engine; similar to weltall’s CWCHEAT for PSP/PSOne titles.

PSPMSX

PSPMSX is ported from Marat Fayzullin and Vincent van Dam’s work; it emulates the MSX, MSX2, and MSX2+ 8bit home computers.

PSPMSX v1.4.0 changes:

  • Cheat support!
  • Memory monitoring engine to find your own cheat code
  • Zip rom files are now decompressed in memory (much faster)
  • New render modes (x1.25, x1.5 and x1.75)
  • Add vertical shift & vsync feature
  • Improve file requester with virtual keyboard to choose sequentially rom files beginning with a given letter
  • Add documentation for settings in help menu
  • The virtual keyboard is now usable in the file requester menu to choose the first letter of the game you search
  • In the emulator menu you can go directly to keyboard and settings menu using the L-Trigger key.
  • Source code can now be compiled to build a linux version

Why PSP TA88v3 cannot be Hacked, yet…

greg | October 6, 2008

Straight from the source — Dark_AleX verbatim…

When the PSP boots, the boot code (aka pre-ipl or ipl loader) loads the ipl from either the nand or memory stick. The IPL is splitted into pieces of 0×1000 bytes.

First 0xA0 bytes of each block is a header for the kirk hardware command 1. It contains keys, the size of the cipher data, and two hashes, one for part the header itself, and another one for the body. The 0xF60 remaining bytes are the ciphered body, which will decrypt to 0xF60 plain bytes… if the hashes, which are checked by kirk hardware itself, are OK. (Note: ciphered body can actually be less than 0xF60, in this case, remaining bytes are ignored… before TA88v3)

What has Sony added to fix this?

The answer can be found in 4.00+ slim ipl’s. They decreased the size of the ciphered body to 0xF40 to leave 0×20 bytes at the end of each block (at offset 0xFE0). In newest pre-ipl’s, these 0×20 bytes have a meaning.

Why PSP TA88v3 Motherboard Cannot Be Hacked Yet

This protection also destroys any possibility of downgrading below 4.00, as these new cpu’s won’t be able to boot previous firmwares ipl’s.

Summary: basically, all security of newest psp cpu’s rely on the secrecy of the calculation of those 0×20 bytes. If pre-ipl were dumped somehow, the security would go down TOTALLY.

And you know the real kicker? The yet-to-be released PSP-3000 will likely sport the new TA88v3 board.

Sam v1.0.0.2 — a PSP Emulator for Windows

greg | October 4, 2008

Developer Actarus, whose name sounds similar to a WipEout anti-gravity ship, has released something new for Sony fanatics around the globe… Allow us to introduce Actarus’ Sam — a PSP emulator for Windows.

In Sam’s current state you’ll see it runs select homebrew; i.e.) MK2k’s Gannatsu Portable. And not only that, but other great homebrew hits as well. Sadly, the likelihood of playing commercial titles or ISO/CSOs is far off; that’s not to say it isn’t possible, Sam just isn’t there yet.

Gannatsu Portable under Sam emulation

Actarus is also requesting a hand –

I’m currently working on a PSP Emulator for PC, Sam. I have problems with IO ports, I don’t know their addresses and how they work. Hope you guys can help me out.

With that said; Sam’s v1.0.0.2 source has been made available.

P.S. if you don’t have WipEout HD (for PS3) yet — get it.

I’m not entirely sure what’s new in this version of Akind’s RemoteJoyLite; nonetheless, it’s fresh off the press and likely improved. All I can suggest — you download version 0.17b1, give it a shot, and leave your experience via the comments.

Akind’s RemoteJoyLite is based off TyRaNid’s PSP development tool. Enjoy TV out like capabilities using a Windows PC and USB 2.0 port.
