PSP Reviews :: Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee

Reviewed by Joshua Smith

Where would one start with this surprisingly fun game. When I first saw this title i was a little skeptical, it being a golf game and all, but once I brought it home and turned it on and heard it's upbeat title music and saw bright flashy graphics my mind started to change.

The overall game types and challenges are fairly standard to most golf games. But the thing that sets this game apart from others is its seemingly neverending unlockables. There are so many that I've been playing for nearly 2 months and still haven't got everything yet. The characters are also really good. They all have there own strengths and weaknesses, only you can improve each characters stats the more you play with that character.

The control of this game is one of its downfalls. Although they touch on ball control in the manual you have to play and read the load screens to really get a good idea on what to do to say, put a spin on the ball, make a ball curve a certain way. But after a few hours and many of bogeys shot you'll soon get the hang of it.

The graphics of this game is pretty good. This was my first psp game so naturally i'm going to say this because well, the first game you saw on psp you were like, "WOW, look at those graphics compared to my GBA or DS". The expltions when you hit the ball and the tracers the ball leaves are all pretty cool. But keep in mind, it is a golf game so it's really not that demanding. The trees sway in the wind and I've seen no trace of slow frame-rate with this game.

The sound on this game isn't that great. When playing a match in the wind theres this really annoying siren like noise thats supposed to be wind but sounds like a siren from long distance. The caddy's voices do get annoying after hearing the same phrases out of there mouth a hundred and fifty times. Fortunatly you can mute these out.

The multiplayer (ad-hoc only) was kind of a disappointment. You only see the other persons ball you don't watch them swing or run to there ball, all you see is a red dot with a number to show what stroke there on. Thats it. It's more fun really to play the computer.

So overall this is a pretty fun game with hours of replayability. Play a putting challenge for those short trips. Or up your stats with a few tournaments on the long road trips.

Final breakdown:

  • Game Play - 9/10
  • Graphics - 8/10
  • Sound - 4/10
  • Multiplayer - 5/10
  • Overall Rating - 7/10
