Re: Official Monster Hunter 2 Help Thread

The difficulty in killing it lies not in the number of hitpoints it has, but rather, the attack and defense modifiers it possesses.  It hits harder than a standard G-rank Diablos, and receives less damage per hit, to an extent that it ends up being as durable as a G-rank Diablos.

So, without using G-rank weapons, I would recommend playing dirty, so as to preserve sanity.

Spam Sonic Bombs.  Each time you get it stuck inside the sand, do a full charge on its wing (cut in from the 'webbing' side, not the 'thick' side), withdraw, and then time another full charge so that it hits its tail (or whatever that remains of its tail) when it lands.  Once you get the hang of landing both hits reliably, the Great Sword is one of the most effective ways of killing it.

For killing the Kirin, the easiest way still seems to be the Sleep-Bomb method, and when you're using this tactic, weapon damage is not an important factor.

Re: Official Monster Hunter 2 Help Thread

thanks, I will apply the methods to the monsters and report back (might take a while but I've got a long train ride home from work now so I'll see how far I can take it.

EDIT: I just cant kill it... I charged every possible shot onto the web side of its wing and blasted using loads of large barrel bomb+s with bomber skill and used lots of sonics (carried and combined). Is there any way for me to find out which GS is obtainable from playing only the village/cat quests that has the highest raw power? I would like a better gs but think I've hit a wall, mine is currently the strategic blade with 1008 raw.

Re: Official Monster Hunter 2 Help Thread

Do I need to use a dragon weapon to break Teostra's horn? I've killed him 5 times, once using Dragonbreaker being the only time I broke his horn. I'm not sure because I can break Kusha and Lao's horns with my Onslaught easy as pie.

Also, is the Blue Ogre Sword worth the 85000z price tag?

If you need the triple-slot, then no, it's the best you'll get without going to G-rank.

Otherwise, there are many options:

Carbalite -> Carbalite+ -> Lacerator (1104)

Valkyrie Blade -> Spartcus Blade -> Siegmund at (1056 blue)

Execution
-> Executioner's Axe at (1104)
-> Agito -> True Dragon's Jaw at (1056, blue)
-> Double Blos Sword -> Upgrade to (1152, blue)

King Tigrex Sword at (1056 white)

Akamu Blade (1248 yellow)

In short, Dragon element is required, but...

...it is widely-accepted that you can break the horns of the Teostra and Lunastra, by first applying Dragon element to its head once via any method.  Once this criteria has been met, the horns can be destroyed using any form of damage (i.e. Dragon element no longer required).

This results in a lot of people bringing a Felyne that has the Dragon element upgrade, and having it deal the qualifying "Dragon" hit.

In itself, at 266 damage and a hint of Dragon element, it's nothing but for show only.  There are better options for that kind of price.

It upgrades to the Azure Ogre Sword (and more), which beats it by a landslide, by having a whopping 500 Dragon element.  Great for targets that are Dragon-weak.  If you use SnS a lot, consider getting this.

Re: Official Monster Hunter 2 Help Thread

So can I go in with a Dragonbreaker or something, repel it, then come back and break its horn with my Onslaught?

Re: Official Monster Hunter 2 Help Thread

I'm not sure if the hit gets carried to the next fight.  Regardless of that, you'll have a better chance of breaking the horn, if you switched the order around (i.e. Onslaught first, and then Dragonbreaker).  This is because you can only break the horn when the monster is below a certain amount of health (60%, to be exact).

Re: Official Monster Hunter 2 Help Thread

Evade should only have +1 and +2, no +3.

It increases the length of invincibility time you receive while performing evasive maneuvers, such as rolling, backstep, and side-step.  The effect is quite pronounced (e.g. rolling through projectiles without the skill is near-impossible; with Evade +2, it requires almost zero practice)
