I've never read C++ for dummies but I found Thinking in C++ by Bruce Eckell a good book when I decided to learn C++.

uhr...not really? he should be using c standard libraries first anyways. and he WILL use C when learning C++. i dont understand why people completely differentiate these two. you cant learn C++ without learning C.

this, i found, was a really good book. it's pretty much a text book but it has lots of practice excersises.
