Question is it really necessary to have OFW 5.03?

Hello fellow members, I was wondering is it really necessary to upgrade your PSP to OFW 5.03 before installing CFW? Will the fixes in OFW 5.03 stayed in the CFW?

What PSP do you have, what firmware is it running now?

It isn't absolutely necessary that your PSP have OFW 5.03 to hack it, it just makes it easy. Unless you have a 2000 with an 88v3 motherboard or a 3000, then you really do have to have 5.03.

As far as the 'fixes' you speak of, with a complete CFW installation, the OFW that the CFW was based on will tell you what features it has. 5.00 CFW is basically 5.00 OFW with added benefits, same with 5.50 CFW and OFW.

5.03 has a kernel exploit that run on ANY psp, using a Tiff exploit, so NO game is needed fo it
so the psp can run homebrew and be able it install CFW

the 3000s 5.03 CFW WILL NOT keep, after a full power down
when you reboot after a full power down you will go back to OFW

3000s CANT use REAL CFW that keeps after a full power down

It a good idea to have "Hide extensions for known file types" in Folder Options(under Tool) unchecked (turn on extensions)

Thank you all for the info. Also, I've heard that you need OFW 5.03 to be able to install chickhen. Is that correct?

I'm not very experienced, but as far as I know, before ChickHen, most or all hacks would flash into the ROM or flash0 of the PSP, as seen on http://davee.x-fusion.co.uk/. My first contact with PSP was already in the 3000s, so I wouldn't really know the extent of risks people went through to hack it before then, but I can tell I'd rather keep hacking it over and over whenever the machine locks up than flashing it...
