A few xbox questions
I got given and old xbox, the hdd was out and it only came with a remote. Ive since formatted the hdd.
My question: 1: How does the xbox start up? Does it boot off the hdd or a chip inside the xbox?

I still have the original 10gb hdd. It's just been formatted by a pc.

Ive still got the hdd. How would i get this eeprom information?

If you formatted the hdd, you're gonna have a hell of a time getting the eeprom.
The eeprom is a key, locking your hdd to the motherboard of that particular xbox. Getting an eeprom without solderinga chip: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/357863 Messy stuff. I'd reccomend just getting another xbox from gamestop. $50, and its a nice investment, for xbmc alone. Use this tutorial to softmod your box and/or upgrade the hdd to a larger capacity without a chip or any special hardware: http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=13629 Hope I helped.

All Xboxes have an EEPROM. It's embedded on the flash. Only way to get it is to use a modchip or linux to dump it.
If you have an old Xbox, just get a solderless (or solder if you prefer for cheaper) modchip [X3CE ftw], install it and you will be set to play with or without a hdd. Otherwise, your Xbox is dead unless you can get another xbox-formatted hdd with the Microsoft dash on it.

Another hdd won't work. That xbox is married to the hdd he formatted. An eeprom reader, or modchip are his only chances of restoring.

He can't unlock it without the key. The key is on the hdd. That just got formatted.
Err... Wait. How did you format a locked drive in the first place?
