Next step:
The text for the images is currently hard coded into the application.
I need to figure out how to read in a specific line from a text file and enter it as a variable. Once this is done I can leave the text in a file. Then will advance the program enough that I can remove the imposed card limiter (currently 8) so that it determines which images to load based on which images are present on the memory stick. I expect this step will take the rest of the week. This is a major step for the program as once it is complete it will be able to run the converted rosetta stone data for almost all languages rather than the preset 8 flashcards of the demo. If it gets just this far and no further I will have fulfilled my original desire. The scope has grown enormously however and I expect I will be coding this for the next 6 months at least.

Dude, if you can get this program working with the original files from Rosetta it would be freaking awesome.
I love using rosetta, and this app would make me go out and buy another memory card just to use it.

Thanks to PSP-Hacks member Deadpan who pointed out that the text IS in plaintext on, I will definately be able to get this working with the language sets. i had completely overlooked one of the files on the cd and getting the text into the application was proving to be extremely difficult and quite a manual process.

I am hoping to have file I/O figured out by Sunday at the latest, and once I have that the program will be able to retrieve directly listings.

This allows for everything we want here. First it will be able to detect installed language directories and show the names in a list. Then it will be able to see which unit there is, which lessons, which cards, and load the phrases into variables as needed.

So the plan is to learn how to do file I/O this week, then over the following week I will get the language detection functions set up. At this point most languages should work. then i will try to sort out bitmapped fonts so I can learn me some russian. that takes us to the end of the contest and then the program will continue to grow.

This does focus on pictures currently, but this will also support custom flashcards and layouts, so you could load it with vocab cards and have it show a card with the word puer on one side, then you hit a key and it shows the word boy, then shows a card with the word puella and you hit a key it shows the word girl.

In time it will be useful beyond Rosetta Stone.

I would just like to point out that learning through pictures was the first way of learning a new language.
Someone had to make a Language-Language wordlist before the "new way" of learning with word translations could be used.

I own Roseta Stone for learning japanese. When do you think that your app would be able to use the Rosseta Stone languge files?
