This is an entry into our PSP-Hacks.com Homebrew Competition 2007

Name of coder: foebea
Name of entry: RosettaShard
Type of entry: PSP Interpreter for The Rosetta Stone and custom flashcards as well
Description of program: An application which has been long desired by some. This will allow you to use some of the more popular tools from the Rosetta Stone language learning tool while on the go. This early version includes 8 flashcards with sound. The flashcard images are royalty free images and the vocal work was done by my mom. This will allow you to see what the purpose of this application is, and with any luck, those of you who have not heard of The Rosetta Stone might check them out. They really are the best for language learning.

In order to make this program even more useful the final version will include a custom layout designer for creation of many types of games and quizes and fully customizable controls. Stay tuned for much more to come.

Just copy to the psp and run the program. Choose Quickstart to get into the demonstration. Once all 8 flashcards are done it automatically goes back to the menu. From the menu you can hit home twice to exit. In the flashcards, press CIRCLE to exit.

The controls for the app are not listed in the program itself yet.
Here is a diagram of the psp with the controls pointed out:

Thats a real nice picture you made for the controls to your program. I am sure it is very easy to understand once your image is viewed. Thanks for doing that.

I have updated the application with todays work.
On the right side of the images it now shows the associated text.
Download Link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/wfkk06

Next step:
The text for the images is currently hard coded into the application.
I need to figure out how to read in a specific line from a text file and enter it as a variable. Once this is done I can leave the text in a file. Then will advance the program enough that I can remove the imposed card limiter (currently 8) so that it determines which images to load based on which images are present on the memory stick. I expect this step will take the rest of the week. This is a major step for the program as once it is complete it will be able to run the converted rosetta stone data for almost all languages rather than the preset 8 flashcards of the demo. If it gets just this far and no further I will have fulfilled my original desire. The scope has grown enormously however and I expect I will be coding this for the next 6 months at least.

I don't know if it matters at all, but I am not associated in any way with Rosetta Stone, and my program has nothing to do with them at all. That might need to be added to the description, I dont know as I'm not a lawyer. Since i'm using completely original code and i'm not distributing any of thier files at all, its not reverse engineering or anything like that. I pitched the idea of them creating a PocketPC version to fill a demonstrable need last year and they replied "Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, our program is only available on cd-rom, or via an online subscription." I replied that I could code this myself and they never responded, so I assume they don't care at all.
