In case anyone needs a reference. From versions 3.03 and below, updates are region-specific. Choose carefully!
Sony Official Firmware Guide Current Version : PSP Fat - v5.01, PSP Slim - v5.01 , PSP 3000 - v5.01 Version 5.01 is the latest among the loads of firmware updates for the Fat PSP, and only one of the numerous for the Slim. (Told you I will stop) This firmware update has been released on 1022, and is meant for everyone.. :) You can download the update via Network Update. To see if you have the firmware version currently running from your PSP, go to Settings > System Settings > System Information. The first or should line should tell which version you have. If you are under the latest firmware, (5.00 and below) your PSP is outdated. *sigh* Bug fixes, bug fixes. Version 5.01 Feature List - Download Corrects issues relating to larger capacity PRO Duos. Namely users who own an 8 or 16 GB stick were left with an insufficient space error when downloading content from the PlayStation Store. You can obtain the latest firmware in 3 ways. (4 ways, but that day will eventually come) A. The most popular way is to boot the PSP to the XMB, and scroll to the [Settings] category. Then, go up to [Network Update]. Allow the Network Update to search for the available updates. If you need the update, it will inform you that there is a new version available. You can go ahead, and download the update. Update files range around 20-25 MB, so make sure you have that space on your PSP. The Update will ask you to confirm this. Once download begins, you will be downloading and saving the update to your Memory Stick, so make sure you stay in range to prevent losing a connection, or getting a corrupted download file. Once that is done, Network Update will exit. NOTE : You must have connection to a wireless access point for this to work. B. The next way is to use a computer to transfer the update data. To do this, go to the respective PSP site for your PSP. (There are different update files for different region versions of the PSP. - Refer to your manual for info.) Download the data. It will be a raw 'EBOOT.PBP' file. To transfer it to your PSP, put your PSP into USB Mode by going to Settings > USB Connection. Once, the computer recognizes your PSP, go into it. Go to the PSP folder, and create a 'GAME' Folder if there isn't one already. Then, create a 'UPDATE' folder within the GAME folder. Transfer the EBOOT.PBP file you downloaded, and keep the name JUST AS IT IS to the UPDATE folder. You can now disconnect from USB Mode. On your PSP, go right to the [GAME] Category, and scroll down to the Memory Stick. Press X (or O) to enter. The update should be at the very top of the list, and it should be labeled PSP Update 3.XX. The update will now begin. You need a near full battery for the update to allow you to update. If you lack that, charge your battery to 78% or so. Try again, and you should be able to update. Press X and scroll through the agreement. Accept it, and the Feature List will appear telling you the new features that will be installed to your PSP once update is complete. The update will now begin. (DO NOT TURN OFF THE PSP, REMOVE THE MEMORY STICK, OR MESS WITH YOUR CHARGER.. TAKING IT IN AND OUT CAN MESS UP WITH YOUR UPDATE.) Wait for progress to reach 100%. The update will now inform you that it is safe to reboot your PSP by pressing X or O. Do it, and you will be rebooted into the XMB eventually. Now, if you are done with the update file, go back to it, press the Triangle Key, and delete it. Your PSP is now up to date. C. Using an UMD will be near impossible unless you have an older PSP and have no clue on how to update or haven't done it in a while. With every game, there is a firmware requirement for your PSP. Your PSP must be on or over that version it wants in order for your PSP to play it. To upgrade via UMD, insert any game. Once, it loads, you will see 2 UMD discs. The first one is the game, the second one is the one containing the update. Start that. Follow the steps for upgrade. Once done, you will need a restart so let the PSP do that and reboot you to the XMB. You can update via that way as well, but the version required for the games are relatively outdated, and homebrew plugins just disguise the firmware version as something else. D. (In Japan Only) Download the update via your PlayStation 3 console, and transfer to the PSP via the USB Cable, and launch the update from the PSP system. Whichever way you do it, you will be up to date with the latest official firmware from Sony. Enjoy the upgrade..Well, not really. (Patches motherboards so you can upgrade, and downgrade without troubles.) Version 1.50 Download Initial North America Release Nothing special about this version. This is where the first PSP systems started. This is also the very first firmware and the lowest you can ever have on your PSP. If you noticed the "downgrade to 1.50" phrases found throughout the section, the reason is this: 1.50 ran a lot of homebrew programs back then. Sony doesn't like the homebrew, and started to patch the system to not allow this to run. They also try to stop people from creating or using downgraders in newer firmwares. This also inspired some homebrew coders to invent custom firmware that was a combination of 1.50 and whatever firmware version by using a 1.50 kernel to allow the features of 1.50 to be implemented into whatever firmware the custom firmware was made for. 'DATA.PSP' files were changed to 'EBOOT.PBP'. Same thing. Version 1.00 Initial Japan Release Pretty much the same homebrew ability as 1.50 *The software of Skype may have been released, but there are still some hardware parts that you need to purchase to use Skype. Skype is currently only compatible with these models: PSP 2001 to PSP-2008, and PSP-2010. Skype is now live.. Read
