Noobs Guide to Installing Custom Firmware WITHOUT Pandora Battery!

HOW TO INSTALL CUSTOM FIRMWARE WITHOUT A PANDORA BATTERY!

Before we begin the Tutorial, it is important to know that this Tutorial will only be of use to YOU if you are running Firmware Versions 5.03 and Lower. Anything higher than the firmware stated could result in a Brick! This Guide is not for PSP-3000s and newer versions of the SLIM!

Installing Custom Firmware

1. Connect PSP to PC via USB
2..Download the 5.03 (www.psp-hacks.com/download.php?id=1645)Update and place it in PSP\GAME\UPDATE
3. Exit USB mode and run the 5.03 update in GAME on the XMB
4. Follow the Instructions correctly and you should now be on 5.03 Firmware
(Skip these steps if on 5.03 Firmware already) Thanks kamen!
5. Connect PSP to PC via USB
6. Download ChickHEN Installer 1.0 SLIM (http://www.sendspace.com/file/kiwh47) or ChickHEN Installer 1.0 PHAT (http://www.sendspace.com/file/hk6tbh)7. When the Application is finished installed run the EXE, DO NOT CHANGE THE PATH DESTINATION!

8. The Application Should look like this if everything ran well...

9. Select your Memory Stick Drive and click "Install ChickHEN"
10. You should receive a POP-UP saying "ChickHEN Installed!"
11. Exit USB and on your XMB go to PHOTO and run ChickHEN
12. It should take about a few times before it actually reboot your PSP, if it freezes there is no problem, simply keep trying!

14. Download Hellcat's Recovery Flasher 1.50 (http://fserv.skill-club.com/get_828_ca0f.html)
15. Place Hellcat's Recovery Flasher in PSP\GAME

17. Place the Firmware given above in the ROOT of your Memory Stick and rename it as "500.PBP"

Correct, But the Softmodded method only works on 1.0 and 1.5 in that Guide, mine is all around!

I drives that you don't see there are hidden. Simply type "H:\" (without quotes) and then install chickhen...

Hi, I have official firmware 5.03 and I have done EVERYTHING to get the HEN working but it just freezes and shutdowns without the green flash/no update/no reboot. The image is surrounded by others and sometimes shows me the picture and then freezes and shutsdown without doing anything or i scroll through and it freezes shutsdown and does not update or reboot itself ㅡ_ㅡ I want cfw 5.00 m33. I've tapped buttons while it is frozen etc reformat default setting but its still not working ㅡ_ㅡ btw i have psp 1001

I followed all your directions line by line in the 'Noobs giude to installing custom firmware without Pandora battery' and I think I ruined my nephew's PSP. It does not boot but I see the green power led light lit. I read a couple threads in various sites and what they are saying is my nephew's PSP is now bricked and I could not do anything about it. yes create the folder.

for any others with problems do this.....
download chickHEN-R2 from here

extract file, copy the slim folder if u have a psp2000 or psp3000 or copy the fat folder if u have a psp1000
Now format ur memcard with psp to create proper folder structure.
Now, open ur psp memcard drive with explorer(my computer), in this drive u will see a folder called psp, open it and create a new folder in here called PHOTO, paste the folder u copied earlier into this new photo folder u created.
Now go back to where the slim and fat folders are u just extracted and copy the h.bin file and copy it to the memcard in the root DRIVE(ie f:\h.bin)
Memcard is now ready to load HEN, start psp, restore defualt settings, scroll to pictures, press x on memcard, chickHEN will appear, click x on it and just wait, psp will crash and if successfull u will see a partial green screen and it will restart.
If not ,and it crashes and just keep trying.
once it worked and ur firmware is 5.03HEN then run the hellcat recovery flasher1.6 to flash/install 5.00M33-6.

1.) You don't need your UMD Drive to run backup games.

2.) That's nice, you'll need Pandora or ChickHEN.

3.) Good deal, hopefully it's not fake. Press triangle on any of the memory stick icons and select "Information." If it says anything besides MagicGate: Supported, then it's a fake and may not be able to run Pandora or any games.

4.) The only way to install custom firmware without Pandora for you will be to first update to official fimware 5.03, you can get it around here (http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/36). Then you can install ChickHEN and be able to use Hellcat's Recovery Flasher (http://downloads.exophase.com/pub/521) to directly flash 5.00 M33. Then from there you can install any custom firmware you want.

If you can't view the information of your memory card, their is either something wrong with your firmware or the psp itself. Turn your psp all the way off and then on again and then try viewing information again.

I tried running pspident to see what i was running on my psp 1001 but I get errors on my psp saying that its a corrupted game data can someone tell me if theres an alternative to this to verify what im running on my hardware

My other issue is that when I try installing chickHEN I keep getting an error as well saying "Runtime error 76 path not found"
I saw another ChickHEn install file someplace else called "easy chickHEN CFW Installer" I wonder if that would help me get chicHen installed onto my psp

I really want to do this mod, If someone can suggest a nother way to install the hack on my psp Id really appreciate it. I dont ahev a pandora battery and on a limited budget so buying more stuff is not something i really want to do

2. chickHEN R2 (afaik) supports psp 3000 series?

3. there are different applications "ChickHEN Installer 1.0 SLIM", "Easy_ChickHEN_CFW_installer_without_Pandora_v1.0", "Skyline969's Pandora-free M33 FULL Installer" will all these 3 applications work on a CHA Slim?

Or to be safe first update to 3.52 M33 then to 5.00 M33, then to 5.00M33-6

Once I try to run the recovery flasher, it loads a PSP logo, chimes and shuts down. I've tried various downloads of Hellcat’s Recovery Flasher v1.60 (different sources), I've also tried putting 500.PBP in the root directory and the RECOVERY folder. Same results in both cases. Any ideas??

Try running CFE first and then HRF.

Sorry... I'm further confused. I thought CFE was a bunch of plugins and extensions to add functions to a PSP that is aleady running a custom firmware (screenshots, remote control, etc). I also thought I needed to be running a custom firmware even to use it.

What exactly should I be running from CFE? Should I load 5.03hen first?

Yes, you have to load ChickHEN in order for you to launch CFE.

CFE is still not working for me. I've loaded all the CFE files as per the readme prior to running the chickhen exploit so it booted with those plugins on the card. I ran the phat chickhen file and loaded 5.03hen and tried all the button commands associated with CFE. No response. The only thing I wasn't able to do was step 5 on the tut on this site because I thought the recovery menu is only available if you reboot and I'd loose the 5.03hen setup.

Any thoughts?

You can't use ChickHEN on ANY PSP that has a firmware higher than 5.03. But since you have a fat psp, you can use Pandora.

ChickHEN doesn't seem to install itself on the memstick. Can't see the popup.
Could my vista have something to do with it? It nagged about the Installer not being installed properly. Thought that nothing couldn't gone wrong :/ I shouldn't be that bad with computers.

Where could those tiff images be found? the post doesn't exist anymore and if the tiff should be somewhere in already downloaded files for the operation or they could be found in the post? Help muchos appreciated.

just do the it the manual way. copy h.bin to the root of your memory stick and if u're phat copy the eggsploit.tiff to PSP/PHOTOS or if u're a slim copy the chickHEN filder to PSP/PHOTOS.

How to INSTALL 5.50 GEN D WITHOUT PANDORA

Also if somebody can tell that is there a way to downgrade PSP back to original state once I upgrade - in DevHook I can do the same by formatting the memory stick. Would it be that easy in new custom firmware

Hmm, you could revert back to OFW 1.50 from your memory stick with Time Machine, but you would need a pandora battery.

So.. would I need a pandora battery to downgrade from OFW 6.10 to OFW 1.50... I read that's the firmware I need to get the custom firmware.. Why would I need the pandora battery if so too? What's wrong with the normal one?

Did you try loading a different UMD? The current game may be corrupted or broken. Also go into Recovery and make sure all your plugins are disabled, as they might be conflicting with something.

I kind of remember when I was installing the chickHEN and the other application in the manual here it said that If I wanted to play UMD I had to do something more I can't remember or find the manual

I got it to work. I couldn't get the ChickHEN installer to work though. I ended up placing the ChickKEN TIFF in the picture folder, and the h.bin in the root directory to get ChickHEN installed. Other than that, it was flawless. Thanks for the tutorial. I'm a a noob, and probably couldn't have done it otherwise.

If your PSP is a phat or an older slim with a non ta-088 v3 motherboard , then pandora battery + magic memory stick will fix it
If it's a 2000 with the ta-088 v3 or a 3000 , then no way to fix it except Sony

The problem is my brother tried the guide and the psp bricked in the process. He didn't look what motherboard it had. It's a psp slim 2004, came with ofw 4.01. Most likely it's ta-088v3.
