they can only be in gif if you want an animation on your desktop, but it will punish your GPU a lot, you will need a fast GPU (Graphics card)

Best option is deskscapes/dreamscene on vista premium/ultimate.

actually you can use html files as your desktop bg.

With an additional program you can use .swf as a Wallpaper. I think I tried this one (http://www.flashkeeper.com/sd.htm) once, however it wouldn't work on Vista so I can't tell how good it will work if you have XP

id use an html file as it consumes the least resources. I used to have a rain loop and a crysis background.

The only problem with HTML Backgrounds is that the Icon Text backgrounds become solid, which looks very ugly I think.

I have Active Desktop disabled. I think anyone who wants an animated background is retarded. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to be using programs than staring at some flash animation on my desktop for hours on end...

But if you must, use Active Desktop - consumes more resources (IE rendering engine is always active), but probably less than using another program.

Dreamscene looks win.

I'll use that when I get my ramz.
