i guess win98 must be the first one to install so u should reinstall vista
or try emulating win98 through virtual PC

It's generally better to install the older OS first, but you can always repair the Vista bootloader later on if necessary.
Do be aware that some motherboards no longer support the Windows 9x platform (eg nVidia's nForce4).
why would you want 98 anyway? most comps that can run 98 won't run vista.

My 200MHz computer with 98lite boots faster than any other computer I've seen with XP or Vista.
Apart from that, I guess 98 for the fun of it?

Windows runs on DOS... so meh.
3.1, I doubt it - I remember the days of waiting for 66MHz 486's to boot into Windows 3.11...

No, Windows always runs off DOS.
Note that Windows NT and onwards no longer natively supported DOS - it's achieved through a kinda emulation.

I believe the Vista install disc has some recovery. Since you don't have the disc, there's some program in the WINDOWS folder (for Vista) which allows you to kinda resetup the boot loader (I believe Windows doesn't allow direct access to MBR, so it may just be for configuring). Dunno if it works under Windows 9x though.
Unless you can find some other bootloader, you're stuck...
