View Full Version : free space on flash0

This possibly serves no real function aside from giving another hidden place in which to store horse cocks away from prying eyes. It perhaps may prove useful for those paranoid about only around 0.1MB free space in flash0 for customization purposes, following updating to 3.XX OE-X custom firmware. Most of my new-found wisdom stems from this (http://forums.qj.net/f-psp-hacks-9/t-guide-save-some-flash0-space-on-oe-ab-86155.html) thread over at QJ. Note that this guide is mainly intended for 3.XX OE firmware, not 1.50 or 2.71 SE-X, although there will be some parts pertaining to all three. Non custom firmware users are unable to recover from accidental bricks. I take no responsibility for your foolishness. You can carry out the below steps using PSPFiler as well, but that is your own perogative.
Purpose:
Creating a "stripped-down" firmware by removing non-essential items, like video playback and the web browser, for customization purposes. All of these are optional things to remove.
Things needed:
1) A PSP with 3.03 OE-C or 3.10 OE-A custom firmware. No other versions.
2) Knowledge of copying/pasting/renaming files.
3) Ability to follow instructions to the letter.
4) Some common sense; only do this if you are comfortable with it/sufficiently bored.
Procedure:
1) Go to the recovery menu. If you don't know how to get there, I advise you do not continue past this point.
2) Go to advanced, then click toggle USB (flash0). Your flash0 should now appear as an external drive on your PC.
3) Create a folder somewhere on your PC, and copy everything in your flash0 into it. This folder will be needed if you screw up and do not wish to do a complete reflash.
Step 1: If you want Japanese/Korean/Chinese fonts, skip this step. For 99% of people this is the only step needed to be taken.
Go to x:/font. Copy and paste ltn9.pgf twice, this makes two copies of the same file. Delete jpn0.pgf, and rename one of the copies to jpn0.pgf.
Delete gb3s1518.bwfon. Rename the second copy of ltn9.pgf to gb3s1518.bwfon.
You now have 2,545KB/~2.5MB more space on your flash0.
Step 2: If you want to use the web browser/flash player skip this step.
Go to x:/vsh/nodule. Note that's nodule, not module. Remove htmlviewer_plugin.prx, htmlviewer_ui.prx and htmlviewer_utility.prx. Go to x:/vsh/resource. Remove htmlviewer.fbm, htmlviewer.gim htmlviewer.msg, htmlviewer.res, htmlviewer.snd and htmlviewer_plugin.rco.
You now have 492KB/~0.5MB more space on your flash0.
Step 3: If you want to play mp3s or music on your PSP skip this step.
Go to x:/vsh/nodule. Remove music_main_plugin.prx, music_common.prx, music_plugin.prx. Go to x:/vsh/resource. Remove music_main_plugin.rco.
You now have 623KB/~0.6MB more space on your flash0.
Step 4: If you want to view photos skip this step, you dirty bastard.
Go to x:/vsh/nodule. Remove photo_plugin.prx. Go to x:/vsh/resource. Remove photo_plugin.rco.
You now have 232KB/~0.2MB more space on your flash0.
Step 5: If you want to play videos skip this step.
Go tox:/vsh/nodule. Remove video_plugin.prx, video_main_plugin.prx, msvideo_plugin.prx, msvideo_main_plugin.prx. Go to x:/vsh/resource. Remove video_plugin_videotoolbar.rco, video_main_plugin.rco, msvideo_main_plugin.rco.
You now have 802KB/~0.8MB more space on your flash0.
Step 6: If you want to use the RSS features skip this step.
Go to x:/vsh/nodule. Remove rss_subscriber.prx. Go to x:/vsh/resource. Remove rss_subscriber.rco.
You now have 21.1KB/~0.02MB more space on your flash0.
Step 7: If you want to use the Network Update icon, GTFO.
Go to x:/vsh/nodule. Remove update_plugin.prx. Go to x:/vsh/resource. Remove update_plugin.rco.
You now have 33.6KB/~0.03MB more space on your flash0.
Step 8: If you want to use the PSP Camera addon skip this step.
Go tox:/vsh/nodule. Remove camera_plugin.rco. Go to flash0:/vsh/resource. Remove camera_plugin.prx. Go to x:/kn. Remove usbcam.prx.
You now have 277KB/~0.3MB more space on your flash0.
Step 9: If you want to use the PSP GPS addon skip this step.
Go to x:/kn. Remove usbgps.prx.
You now have 15.4KB/~0.02MB more space on your flash0.
Final step: Only if you have ballsed up and get a semi-brick. If not, this can be ignored.
Go to the recovery menu and re-enable flash0 access via USB. Drag and drop everything in your backup flash0 folder back into your flash0.
Alternatively if you'd rather start over, you have two choices:
1) Return to 1.50 and reflash custom firmware.
2) Reflash 3.03 OE-C or 3.10 OE-A directly.
Returning to 1.50: Download the 1.50 EBOOT here (http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/4). Click "toggle USB" (memory stick access, not flash access). Rename the EBOOT.PBP to UPDATE.PBP, and place it in PSP/GAME/RECOVERY. Click the third option, "Run program at..", then follow what it says on-screen. You can then reflash 3.XX OE afterwards.
Reflashing 3.03 OE-C/3.10 OE-A: Download the 3.03 OE-C installer here (http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1043) or the 3.10 OE-A installer here (http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1049). Click "toggle USB" (memory stick access, not flash access) and run the installer. Go to PSP/GAME and delete the recovery folder, if there is one. Rename 303oeflasher or 310oeflasher to RECOVERY (all caps). You can delete the 3xxoeflasher% folders. Click the third option in the recovery menu, "Run program at..", then follow what it says on-screen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You should now have removed/replaced around 5MB of non-essentials from your flash0. You can check how much space you have freed up by right-clicking the drive and going to properties. I have tested all of this myself and can play PSP games just fine, aside from not being to exit to the XMB via pressing Home - one must do a hard reset (I cannot be arsed checking precisely which files removed are responsible for this) I have not yet tested PSX games but they ought to work the same. There are another few files which may be removable, if they are and their absence causes no problems they will be added to the list.
Here is a final table list of all the files listed above, 32 in total:
x:/font/gb3s1518.bwfon (dummy this)
x:/font/jpn0.pgf (dummy this)
x:/kd/usbcam.prx

Um... I think I may have messed up a little bit -_-' I was following this tutorial to free up some space in the flash drive but I think I accidentally delted a couple of files I shouldn't have, everything seems to be working OK though strangely enough... anyway I dumped the flash before doing anything as the tutorial said but when I started deleting files in Filer2.2 by default everything was highlighted and I accidentally OKed deleting the first couple of files before I realised what had happened, the tutorial says to enter USB Mode in the recovery menu and rename the file foler in PSP/GMAE150 to BOOT but I don't quite follow here, what recovery menu is the tutorial referring to and exactly which folder am I to rename BOOT? If someone could please elaborate on the "Final Step" it'd be greatly appreciated, sorry for any bother this causes.

12-30-2006, 03:08 PM
If your "filer" folder is in GAME150 then copy and paste it to GAME, and rename it to BOOT. If it's in GAME then just rename to BOOT (all caps). Then in the recovery menu go to Configuration -> Autorun program at..
Next time you start your PSP it'll load straight into Filer, from there you can copy your things back. It may however be simpler to just reflash 1.50 and then get back to OE if you're not sure which files you've messed up.

Added in gb3s1518.bwfon, after some 12 hours the dummying of this font file has done no buggering-up. I must admit that OlliE was the catalyst in this file.
Also changed "Navigate to" to "Go to", simpler.

Navigate down to font and press Circle. Go down to ltn9.pgf and press X. Press Circle on the menu that pops up, this copies the file to the RAM. After it is copied, go up to jpn0.pgf (Japanese font file). Press X and Square to delete this file. Now press Start until you get to ms0:/, press X and paste the file from RAMDISK to your memory stick. Press X on the file and then R-Trigger to rename. Rename it to jpn0.pgf (this is very similar to the PSP's OSK). Now return to RAMDISK and delete ltn9.pgf (you should know how to delete now). Return to ms0:/ and copy jpn0.pgf to RAMDISK. Go to flash0:/ and navigate to font. Paste the file from RAMDISK here by pressing X and Triangle. Finally, go back to RAMDISK and ms0:/ and delete jpn0.pgf from both locations..

When I tried one time it didn't wish to be renamed within RAMDISK, thus I added in one more minor step. It can't hurt though for others to spend slightly more time renaming and moving things within Filer to become more familiar with its uses.

Well I tried removing the font. But only removed the one explained in the tut not when you said "now do the same for gbn ect."
Anyways exited the PSP filer and now I get the blue screen that tells me to hold the O button because my registry files are corrupt and to return to default settings. Well when I do that it just goes black a few seconds and goes back to the same screen. When I hard boot my PSP my old custom intro still shows and I CANT BOOT IN RECOVERY MODE.
WTF did I do wrong and how do I fix it?
K well I managed to get into Recovery and went back to 1.50 and repeated all the crap I've done to modify my old one.
I now know what I did wrong. When renaming the file to jpn0 there is an icon that looks like a 0 with a slash through it.
Would you mind editing in that you need to go to the alternate character set to enter the 0 so more people don't have the same problem I did. Thanks

Well update #2.
Tried it again, and did everything to delete the Japan Language and it woked.
Checked and saw I had 2 mb Flash available.
After I tried to delete the gb one (yes I did all the other renaming and RAMDISK stuff)
I had the same result as last time with the blue screen of death infinitely telling me to hold O
Gonna downgrade and upgrade back this time only deleting the Japanese language.

I dummied the jpn0 file a few mins ago and now X Flash gives an error message stating "YOU MUST ONLY USE VALID PGF FONTS WITH X FLASH. ANY NEW FONTS YOU INTRODUCE SHOULD BE TESTED WITH THE AID OF A FIRMWARE LAUNCHER . X FLASH HAS DETECTED AN INVALID OR MISSING FONT OR THE FILE IS GREATER THAN 1000000 BYTES.
I didnt get this error prior to creating the dummy file. I copied the jpn0.pgf I had from the flash0 dump that I did in the beginning but I get the same error. The rest of the files are still in there and I didnt mess with any others.
Any ideas on what I may have hosed up? The files is greater than 1000000 bytes to begin with right?

If you're going to be doing any font changing put the original files back in place, reflash fonts with X-Flash then do the dummying procedure anew.

costum font may be in different size and not fit.
(it's custom, btw) But now, I use default psp fonts, only customization on that front I've done is this "mod" to free up some flash0 space by removing jpn0.pgf (which was all I had done when I first posted this question) and the bwfon now. All the text in the browser is chopped in half, it's odd, but all the other text everywhere else is fine. I'll load a prx and take a capture while I wait for the 3.03 eboot to finish downloading.

The recovery menu is what you have with custom firmware only I'm afraid. 1.50 users have more than enough space in flash0. With 3.02 OE-X and above, the flash space became very restricted for customization purposes.
Non custom firmware users are unable to recover from accidental bricks.
Unless you can load an update from a UMD on autoboot.. sorry, but you're boned.

Sounds like you did it right. The partly missing text in the internet browser is just a side-effect. If you remove things you don't need other than the fonts you should have sufficient space for a gameboot larger than the standard 200KB one. If the fonts in the web browser don't show back up when you replace gb3s1518.bwfon, you can always revert to 1.50 then reflash your custom firmware.

what is the purpose for this?
Well, in 1.50 there was some 9MB free of the 20MB in total for flash0 - where the firmware's stored. In 3.0X OE custom firmware all but 0.1MB of this was taken up. By removing some never-used things, you can free up some space for a custom gameboot you particularily enjoy which is larger than the existing gameboot and the remaining flash0 space.

Updated for 3.03 OE-X. I've decided to keep the tutorial mainly as-is for clarity, there are some who might want to remove the music or video feature for shits and giggles.

is there a way to delete remote play, game sharing, online manuals? nice guide though
cr0bar
01-20-2007, 06:21 AM
I tried removing remote play to no avail. I believe the game sharing is part of the WiFi set of files, but I haven't tried to remove it yet. The online manual just redirects to the internet browser, it would only take up a few kilobytes for the bookmarks.

Since, apparently, part of the text for the internet browser is stored in jpn0.pgf (or the ltn9.pgf file doesn't have information for the browser's text) would it be possible to find/copy that data or to leave jpn0.pgf there with everything other than that information removed? It seems like we could just create an empty jpn0.pgf file on the memory stick and then put it into flash0 instead of copying ltn9 there, or am I wrong?
If jpn0 is there and the browser text is fine, I think we just need to find the part that corresponds to that text, yeah? It would have to be hex-edited, yes? There is no program on windows/nix to view these font files is there?

Ok guys i am stuck on the bit where it says
"Do the same renaming and replacing steps now for gb3s1518.bwfon as above. Note that by dummying this file you'll get half cut-off text in the internet browser. It's up to you to decide if the extra megabyte is worth it."
does this mean i HAVE to do this or can i leave it?
its also says
copy ltn9.pgf to the ramdisk then to rename it to jpn0.pgf, but then its says
Do the same renaming and replacing steps now for gb3s1518.bwfon as above
.... Having two files with the same name..... isnt that an isntant brick????
justinisloco
03-02-2007, 09:46 AM
actually, if you want, just copy ltn9 to RAMDISK, then just rename that to gb3s1518.bwfon, and your internet browser will be fine if you dont rename jpn0.pgf ... you wont save as much memory and such, but your internet browswer will be fine

Go to x:/font. Copy and paste ltn9.pgf twice, this makes two copies of the same file. Delete jpn0.pgf, and rename one of the copies to jpn0.pgf.

Step 8: If you want to use the PSP Camera addon skip this step.
Go tox:/vsh/nodule. Remove camera_plugin.rco. Go to flash0:/vsh/resource. Remove camera_plugin.prx. Go to x:/kn. Remove usbcam.prx.
You now have 277KB/~0.3MB more space on your flash0.
i think you made a little mistake... should the "x:/vsh/nodule. Remove camera_plugin.rco" be a .prx file?
cr0bar, great tut man, I'm actually gonna use this. Very nice!
The only thing I noticed was the recovering to 1.50. Just using a 1.50 eboot won't work, you need all the files from the recovery folder.

noob question...
I took off the languages with success, and my psp is working fine.
I'm just wondering, what's the point of freeing up space on Flash0, other than more room to store gameboots, does it make the system slightly faster? Can you look at more on the internet (look at more as in you don't get the thing that says not enough memory)
and also question #2
if I flash to a different custom firmware say when 3.30 oe-a comes out, do I have to replace everything back to what I made a backup of riginally of Flash0? (or if it matters "well it hasn't come out yet so we don't know" say i'm flashing to 3.10 oe-a' or 3.10 oe-a from 3.03 oe-c)
thx
p.s. i tried not looking like a noob by making it "sound professional"... damn, now i sound like a noob lol

Mainly for custom themes, which are becoming more and more popular amongst 3.03 OE-C users.
if I flash to a different custom firmware say when 3.30 oe-a comes out, do I have to replace everything back to what I made a backup of riginally of Flash0? (or if it matters "well it hasn't come out yet so we don't know" say i'm flashing to 3.10 oe-a' or 3.10 oe-a from 3.03 oe-c)
No. When you flash 3.10 OE or the upcoming 3.30 OE it will format your flash anyway before the new firmware is flashed.

i backed up my flash0 from when i had it on 3.10 oe-a2 when i freed up that space... will it work now, can i copy that to my flash0 on my 3.03 oe-c?.
and if it doesn't, is there any way to take out the chinese characters or whatever, while still being able to see the full letters in the browser? Cuz after following it step by step from your guide, the letters are cut in the browser.

You can go to 3.40 OE-A and still customize the same as 3.03 OE-C. 3.10 OE-A' was capable of custom gameboots anyway.
i backed up my flash0 from when i had it on 3.10 oe-a2 when i freed up that space... will it work now, can i copy that to my flash0 on my 3.03 oe-c?.
You should not copy your flash0 from one firmware version to another. Just reflash.

The letters are cut anyway. I just use a small font, that way it doesn't seem to be cut off.
