Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a port of the Playstation 1 game that is perhaps the rarest of them all. While it didn't have a small printing, it just sold all of its copies and no one has really traded it in much. It easily goes for $100 on EBay but it can go for higher, Depending on its demand that week. Now we have this title on the PSP and it is a very welcomed addition indeed. Is the game worth all of the fuss or is it just another title that has a weird fan base despite the fact the game is mediocre? Read on!

Valkyrie Profile tells the tale of a Lenneth, she's a Valkyrie... A big war is going on, on her home astral plane or whatever it is. She must come down to this Earth like place and collect and mold souls to send back up to fight in the war. Now, enter first half of the game has no actual plot besides what I just said. You pretty much go around collecting the souls and each soul has its own mini story. This really keeps things interesting and the stories are all different but obviously they don't all end happily since you are after their soul.... The second half of the game continues the story that is begun in the beginning but you still collect souls. However, I really liked the characters. They aren't completely fleshed out but the bits of background info that you do have can help you connect with them.

Graphic wise VP is a nice surprise. The world map is in 3D but that doesn't matter. You don't walk on it. You fly around on it. So it likes any true details. Think of one of those maps where the mountains are slight bumps, it's kind of like that but you can have control over your movement, it's not a point and click type of thing. The dungeon and town graphics are very nicely done. Things are not modern. The character models are 2d sprites. They look nice, if not just a smidge blurry. Actually, if I have one complaint about the graphics is how blurry it looks at times and I have no clue why it looks blurry. The backdrops all look nice; some almost could pass as a nice watercolor painting. Square-Enix has replaced a few different scenes in this port with jaw dropping CGI. Some of the later scenes are really nicely done.

The sound in this game is very nicely done. Voice acting is all very well done but fans of Pokemon will recognize a few voices as it is done by the same team. The sound effects are good enough. Your crystals shatter, shouts are made in battle ECT. The music in the game is freaking fantastic. Best I've heard in a while and even though a few songs are reused a bit too often, I never grew tired of them. I also enjoyed the battle music.

The control took me a while to get the hang of. Granted the PSP is lacking two buttons so I'm sure SE had to alter some stuff. On the 3D world map you move forward by holding circle and you turn with the nub. You select your location with X, or circle cancels. In towns it's just X talks and you hit whatever button it shows to move into a building or onto the next area, you'll know what I'm talking about when you play but if you've played La Pucell Tactics for the Playstation 2 you'll know exactly what I mean. In dungeons things are different. Moving about is the same as in towns. You can jump by hitting circle. You can attack by hitting X (battles are all turn based; I'll cover that in game play). You can also shoot crystals, which are used for building steps to climb and what not. When you're in battle the game plays oddly. Each character is a button (X, circle, triangle, square) and by hitting their button they attack. You cans elect your target though. You need to hit select to bring up a more in-depth menu which has you selecting what you want to do (run, magic, item) and then you select the person to do that command and that who or what to do that command to. I know it sounds complex and I was a little put off by it at first but it after a few battles I had it all down.

Valkyrie Profile doesn't play like any other RPG out there. Perhaps its little quirks are what make the game have such a fan base. The game is split up into 8 chapters. The first thing to do in each chapter is hit start on the world map. This causes you to sense things. It pretty much opens up new dungeons and towns for you as well as shows you where the souls are. You'll just need to do that over and over until it doesn't give you something new, about 5 times per chapter.

Now, before we get any further, there is a catch. Each chapter allows 25 points. You use points by doing actions. Entering a town uses up 1 or 2 points (I can't remember) and dungeons are the same. It's just one uses 1 more than the other. You always have enough to do everything that is unlocked in a chapter. Sometimes you should have extra. While this does seem like it is limiting the game, nothing is done in the towns besides find the people and sometimes get an event item. Most dungeons don't respawn the enemies either so there isn't any reason to go back to them unless you want some items you may have missed.

The dungeons feel like the newer Castlevania games. They are almost maze like, some have simple puzzles (be it push blocks or making stairs). Now, say you're in an area and there is an open door behind your character, if you can go in there you will hit up, or down (it will say). That's how that works and it did seem weird at first but it works well. Load times are fine, no problems there. Now, enemies also appear in the dungeon. It isn't a random battle. If you just run into an enemy there is a 50% chance they will attack first. There is a true ATB bar it's you go and then they go, then you (wash and repeat). However, you can freeze the enemy by using your crystals or if you swing your sword at an enemy it will allow you to always go first. In the later levels some enemies are placed to force the 50/50 odds.

I briefly described how the fighting system works in the control section. Besides what I already said there, there are a few more things to go over. Everyone has Hp and it is shown before you start attacking. There is now magic, it's something like a C bar or something. It means when it's full or charged you can do X attack. You only need to worry about that when it's a mage. Most of the time you'll need to skip a turn as your mage because they can't attack (they only use spells and using the select options allows them to hit all enemies instead of 1. There is a chance the enemy will drop some little dot things after a mage attacks, these will refill her CB and allow an attack on the next turn, so you don't have to skip a turn as her. Now, there is a catch to the actual gameplay. While each character is assigned to a button, you need to know your characters. Some attack slower than others and this is important because you want to combo. The higher the combo, the more damage you do. Some enemies can only be hurt by combos so sometimes an attack or two may miss. It's usually wise to use a magic attack first on a single enemy (if there is only one enemy) and wait a second or so and then combo into your others. It breaks the combo skill the enemy has and allows you to attack. As you can tell the game does require some actual thought into how to fight each fight.

One last thing on the game play. You still gain EXP like normal. You also gain bonus EXP when doing specific tasks in a dungeon, those go into an EXP orb. They can be dished out any way you wish. Now, normal EXP is just gained and when you get enough you go up a level. The catch is that while basic things upgrade you also get upgrade points. You can use these on Traits (Lenneth has none while everyone has some). Traits are only good on the characters you want to send up and fight in the war. At the end of each chapter you're given goals what the game is looking for you to send up. A lot of it has to do with traits and you'll want to use that character in that chapter until you level him up enough and upgrade the specific goals. Usually you'll have more than enough though. Besides traits there are also skills like auto heal (which works about 50% of the time and I actually found it useful) you can also get different things that upgrade your stats. A lot of customization is at your hands and adds even more depth to this title.

The game itself is fairly long. About 40 hours or so and that is with the secret dungeon. What is interesting is that you can play the game on easy, normal, or hard and it's different in all of them. Easy and normal share specific dungeons and normal and hard share specific dungeons. For the best experience I would recommend playing hard first and then easy. Normal has no dungeons that are normal only and easy is actually a harder setting due to limited character selection and fewer items to get. The game also offers a total of 3 endings. One is just a game over if you totally fudge the game up which is pretty hard to do. One is the normal and the other is the best ending which requires a bit of extra work and having to do things in a specific order. The best is only available on normal and hard.

So, is Valkyrie Profile a must own RPG? It all depends on what type of player you are. If you're in it for nothing but the story you will be disappointed. The story isn't very deep and the character development is weak. However, the game play itself is so unique and solid that it more than makes up for the story. I did like the story though and the setting was great but if you're one of those people who requires a deep and emotional story you're really not going to find it here. I recommend this game as a buy though to anyone who is interested in it because lets face it, Square titles tend to be rare after being out for a few years.

as far as your reviews go, they are biased and they can certainly do without the alliterations or acronyms that don't make sense (if millions may object, than it obviously isn't a "really perfect game"). i also like how you criticize ffx for being innovative, and praise for ffxii for being... well, innovative. the ffx review was about 25% explaining and 75% bashing. calling nobuo "burnt out" because he composed what is considered by MANY to be the best FF OST ? keep the bias out of your reviews, and don't bash games and then give them a decent score

As for the rest of this wall of syntax genocide, I own most Final Fantasy games released in the US, and I don't happen to like all of them. As for too hard? RPGs are the easiest games to complete, 100% completetion on the other hand, is a different story. (35:00 on FFX, with almost no sphere grid completion)

Anyway, I liked any final fantasy, and I have a crap load of negative remarks about it, such as too many cliche's, character development, and etc. MANY people do this, they're called gamers. Thats what reviewers do. They give their opinion on the game that they are reviewing. If you don't like the review, don't bother with it. Go and get a second opinion. Reviews are there for people to give an opinion about the game, so that people who have never played it before can get a better understanding of the game.

Actually, in college, one of the biggest parts in classes are stating your opinion, depending on which class you are in. Now, I highly doubt you are in College, since you can barely spell "writing", and don't even use punctuation.

People write reviews because they either feel strongly on a subject, positively or negatively, or they're paid to do so. While I don't agree with Ashley in most all of his/her reviews (I don't like VP, I like old-school FFs before FF7 but with the addition of FF9, FFT PS1 and newly FF12) I won't let you bash the entire reviewing community for you to think you're superior because your opinion is the only one that counts in this world.

Santoku was making a very good point in saying that not everyone likes FF. I don't like ALL of FF, I actually hate FF7, FF8, FFTA, FFX and FFX-2 (never played FFXI) but I don't go around yelling "ZOMG FF8 IS TEH SUCK, ANYONE WHO DOESN'T AGREE IS A TURD". Anyway back to the subject at hand i like final fantasy that my opinion you can add the word fanboy if you like as you seem to use it all the time. I am a fanboy of games and that what a gamer is.

If you truly were a gamer, you would see all the faults that the Final Fantasy series have. They are great games, do not get me wrong, but there is so much wrong with them.
As for final fantasy i like it indeed some final fantasy are not as good as other final fantasy as with all games, movies etc. My problem is im to much of a gamer so i get carry away with my opinions of games. Again, check the IP addresses, as I highly doubt the two of us live in the same country. IP addresses are easily traced to the country of origin.

No, you see. A fanboy is someone who flames another for not sharing the same opinion as them on a particular game, which is what you have done multiple times.

A fanboy is someone who bashes another for not liking a particular series, which again, you have done multiple times.

They are great games, but I don't like them all. As I stated, there is a lot of things wrong with all of the games, such as tremendous plot holes, glitches, and other things.
