View Full Version : How to turn up the sound?

Hi psp-hacks.com community,

i have one simple question:

I use firmware 2.0 and i dont want to downgrade to 1.5 yet. A friend told me that some ppl jumped to often between 2.0 / 1.5 and there memory is broken now. is this correct? If it is true i downt want to downgrade ;)

Now my questions is: Is there any chance to set up the sound ? When i hear music or watch videos it is to quiet :/ At first i used the provided headset wich comes with the psp value pack ... i used a other headset then and it was a bit louder ... but not enough for me.

So what can i do? I think for 1.5 is an other player availble but what is with 2.0 ?

Nitr0

ps: pls excuse my bad english :)

Try this...you see the PSP label at the bottom middle of the psp, to the left of that is a button with a label +...press that and hold it...

And try this... There is a cord connected at the bottom left of your psp.. That is your mp3 remote. Un hook it to hear the speakers

get a more efficient headphone... it'll boost up your volume.
no hacking required. hehe

Hey...! I didn't ask for your opinion, now did I? :x

But yeah. Although it is fun to plug in my speakers and play Super Mario Bros with the sound on full blast :) (with the bass turned all the way up)

Sure i can do that. But it is a PORTABLE playstation and i never have speakers with me :)

I all ready wrote that i have tested the sound with an other headphone. The sound turns up, but not enough for me.

Have anybody thought about a little booster wich you connect between your PSP and the headphone ?

You can go into video settings, and scroll down to video volume. If you set the option to +2 it'll make the movies louder. As far as mp3s go I guess you're outta luck. :( sorry

yeah, i know what you're saying about the sound... its like when i'm alone in my room and listening to mp3 through my psp speakers, the sound is pretty loud or loud enough to hear it clearly but when i'm on a bus when load of people, i can't hear jack even with the volume turn on, the best thing is use a headphone..

Sorry dude,

thats not true. you cann boost UMD videos and UMD music with the software only !! Not the music / videos from your memorystick :) Actual it is, because Sony wants that you buy UMD videos / music and dont play all this stuff from your memory stick ^^

Have you ever tried to convert videos for the psp? Its not possible to play 480x272 videos from your memorystick ;) the firmware video player dont allow it. You can just play 320x240 videos from your psp .... because sony want that you buy UMD´s ! :X

Hm okay enough from that ... i will try to find a booster (an extra little device) to turn up the sound by using google.

What i said was true. It does boost the sound for movies. Albeit only UMD movies, movies none the less.

I have no experience with movies off the mem stick. I only have the orig. 32mb card. :(

*Joke* You could go to the store and pick up these handy little items called Q-tips. Now what you do is, purchase/steal them, take them home, open the package, run warm water on the on of the tips, insert moist tip into ear until you feel resistance (resistance means that something is stopping you so don't go any further), twist/or move inserted portion around, pull out and discard. Repeat these steps until removed tip coms out clean, in other words, once the tip is no longer brown you are finished

Anyway, there are portable speakers that you could carry around
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2151289&cp=2032054.2032118

And i remeber hearing about some device to amplify the sound on the psp but it damages the sound if used to high or to often or something like :? that

i saw a PSP casing with in-built speaker at a store in sg. I can't find it online so I dunno how good it is. It cost S$45 (before bargaining). that's about US$26.50. Probably can get it for S$35-S$40 after bargain at that place.

i dont think it's the same one, coz I didn't hear about the in-built rechargeable lithium ion battery in the casing. I didn't have a good look at it so I'm really not sure. But if it's the same thing, i'm not surprised if it's selling at S$45 over here. Anyway... for S$45... with in-built speakers... should be quite cheap for you guys at US, after conversion.

FamilyGuy

That one is $80 USD, and i'm sure it's not the same one that you were talking about. Hmmm.... is the battery worth an extra $35-40 USD, it does look nice though :|

peeInMyPantz

That's better for all the specs, it also says an extra 7hrs of playback and those 2X batteries are like $40-50 USD on their own so maybe it has to cost that much more :|

Dual headphone jacks and it also functions as a nice stand, i might actually by this

How much is that USD? It is no where near as pretty as the one i posed and i think i will buy this, the $80 USD one, for use at work :)

I'm using some PC speakers attached to my psp right now cuz i'm not allowed to have in earbuds :| . So this will be a good, and more portable alternative for me and tthis is a big deal cuz i don't buy accessories (excluding my memory card)

For the UMD's you can press triangle while watching a movie and select UMD Volume, As for the MP3's save them to your computer open them with iTunes, Right click on the song, go to the options tab increase volume by 100 %, This will also work for your own videos on your Memory stick DUO, but you need to have the latest iTunes...

iTunes, the only thing apple is good for :sigh:

that djsp would work for louder volume. just not good on the psp speakers. good for earphones. it actuallu has an equalizer that u tweek for louder sound. if that aint good enough, sony does make some earphones, not the ones that come with the psp, that have a volume control and boosts the sound by at least 30% of the source.

i read that. i tried it too. im having the same problem you are. the thing wont work with american psp headphones. that guy i think has UK model or old model, cuz i opened it and there is no resistor. The stock headphones suck by default, they are just cheaply built so that the real prize, the remote, doesnt have to be sold seperatley.

Heres what you can try since i dont think a single post has been helpful:
for now, i use noise cancelling headphones, though they are WAY too bulky to carry around. more for producing music.
Get pelican headbanger earsubs FROM THE STORE!!!. i cant stress this enough. they HAVE to be the ones with the 2AAA battery pack that serves as an amplifier. they are earbud type so the moment you buy them, get back in the car, open them up, and make sure they dont take up the remote jack. I know the ones without the amplifier take up the jack, disallowing you from using the remote and making it really tedious to change songs. THEN, check to make sure they fit. logitech playgear stealth knda raised the volume, enough to drown out the highway sound driving in a brand new van, but they didnt fit me at all, none of the gels either.

The other option you could do is buy or build a headphone amplifier. MAKE SURE to bring the manual or specs for the headphones cuz if you get too powerful an amp then it will blow out ur 'phones. Here is a link to make one, but its too technical for me: http://www.tangentsoft.net/audio/cmoy-tutorial/parts.html

i hope this helps, it didnt help me. if i find a good amplifier, i will post. you can also search for psp headphones and look for the topic started by me. that helps a little bit. i rejected both logitech playgear stealth and the earsubs. i was thinking of trying the playgear mod, but only if i cant find a good amplifier. rather spend 40 bucks on a good amp than a pair of uncomfortable/non loud headphones.

EDIT: ok so the cheap ampifier i found the review says that u will hear the "amplifier" sound. like the hissing and sometimes the sound that it makes if you jar it or hit it. after that, they are like 60 bucks and up. One way to make the psp stock headphones suck less can be this:
1)Take off the grey part. (for white headphones)

2)gently pull on the wires so the actual speaker pops out of the grey part. and the grey part should now be completleydetached from the headphones.

3)obtain a normal needle, but a hypodermic type insulin sho needle would be better (cvs i think you can get it at)

see the holes? they are in a pretty shape. see the dens around it? that is BAD. it is blocking out the sound.

4) take that needle and start poking holes CAREFULLY into the grey part FROM THE SIDE THAT COMES IN CONTACT WITH YOUR EAR. if you do it the other way, the headphones will be marginally better but alot more uncomfortable, and u will need to sand them or somethng.

the idea came from the psp faceplate speaker mod, in which you take off the face plate and cut off or remove the plastic dust plate from the sound holes. then you cover them so tha dust wont get inside. (i used that foam material that stops cdr's from moving up and down in the cdr cases that are like a stack of 100 or so without cases. its like a styrofoam (almost) washer. i screwed the screen tho, so you have to be careful

Get some of those nice cordless earphones, plug the radio transmitter into your PSP ,stick earphones in your ear (don't get this part wrong!) and you get portable, amplified sound. Use some nice rechargeable batteries and save the planet (while destroying aliens, foreigners, vehicals, planes, braincells.....)! - Nice!

Yeah, thats what i figured, just download some program (or pirate so that i dont have to babysit it, once i downloaded a program i thought would convert but it stopped after 5 songs to ask me if i wanted to buy it yet. it kept doing this so i pirated the other best one i could find, did my thing, and uninstalled it) so i will try that.

Also, its not that im partially deaf, but yes, i do have trouble hearing unless im completely engrossed on it or concentrating very hard. and at home or in the car im fine with the huge ones (other than i block every one else out) but i wanted headphones that will combat the noise of say a crowded auditorium. I am still trying to find good headphones that are loud. the speaker volume doesnt bother me cuz i only use headphones. it just bugs me, more than anything, when the volume is more than half way up and i still dont hear the underlying sounds in my music. This may B because im at 64 kbps to save room. once i save up for mayB a 4 gig, i will encode to 96 or 128, and increase the track volume too. until then i just want good loud headphones.

i know which ones ur talking about, i tried those. Its all good now, i got the Koss Sparkplugs. the only downside to them is that it takes a bit long to put then in just right. and if you have a shallow ear canal, then those arent that great. I am gonna use those for games and stuff (worked for SOCOM in the middle of a crowded room full of energetic people) and use my CD player for music till i save up for an ipod video, or the next version of ipod that they come out with cuz it will take me a month or so to get it. unless i find an MP3 player by creative or something that is cheaper/20GB+/same features,

Easy solution to all this.

Do as i did. Had a spare set of amplified headphones that i got from my local music shop. The one's you get for personal guitar playing with the little control box that takes a couple of AAA batteries.

Then i opened the control box and took out the crap headphones attatched to this. Then fitted a 3.5mm female socket in to the control box. And then i just use my sony ericsson HPM-70 headset with it. Quality sound, and as much as you need  Actually these headphones are pretty good without the amp bit, but the leads a little short as it originally plugs in to the extra lead that fit's in to my SE phone.

Alternatively just buy some pre made one's. there's plenty on the net.

I HAVE THE ANSWER...

what you need to do is turn your PSP off, leave it off for 5 mins, then get your phone, book an appointment with your doctor, for a hearing test, the problem is your ears..

Man, i had the same problem.

But i solved it by buying a new set of headphones - a Sennhesier HD 202.

Now i have the opposite problem! If i dont watch the volume i end up putting it too high and I eventually get an earache! :)

Or try this, take your PSP and have a field day with it. Morons, dont have the brain cell to simply press a button.

Someone could make a hack for PSP to boost the memorystick sound higher.. Like +6 on UMD videos and x4 on the volume from memorysticks.

Silent people can still hear.

Earbud's suck. Don't bother with them.

If you do music the legit way (ripping your own cd's), raise the normalization level to 100% because sometimes programs set it to 98%. That will raise the sound of your mp3's. You must be near deaf if you can't hear the sound on the PSP.

Get better headphones. Do some research.

I have this problem too, when ever i come home from school and walk over this highway bridge, I CAN BARELy hear my tunes WTF. I know i can buy thos earbuds that lock the noise out of you ear, but WHY! There has to be a way to amplify the sound a litle bit, just like 3 or 4 more levels that would great. Is anyone a PSP PROGRAMER EXPERT, one who knows EVERYTHING about the PSP?

Or you can connect your PSP to speakers. Like your computer speakers.
although that's very true... it defeats the purpose of having a playstation PORTABLE. hehe
I still like doing that when I'm at home hehe. :bucktooth:

u can use this program called mp3gain and manually increase the volume for ur songs (gotta be in mp3 format). use google to search for it. i highly recommend that u keep another copy of the song b4 u do this because sometimes u can make it too loud and start hearing buzzing noises.
