Hey yall, i just went out today and bought all the things i need to make this charger EX (2 9V batts, hookups, AAA batts, Soldering iron, and firewire port) ansd i put it all toghether and it works awesomely! I was thinking about experimenting with a similar thing except for a PSP..this altoids charger adds another 10 hours of battery life to my ipod! IF u have any suggestions or would like to join me in coming up with a solution, leave some replies!

If u wana make ur own check this out for instructions and materials:

did you have any problems with the tin heating up?

basicpimp
08-03-2005, 12:44 AM
nope not @ all. the solder i got from radio shack heated up quick tho..like i was holdin the other end n i felt it..got hot quick. The tin stayed cold like after i soldered the firewire connector to the tin i touched it n it was normal.

dont know how youll get that to work but whatever. you should just have the led go on while charging

This is extremly easy to do for the PSP, and I have already done so ;)
The PSP charger just uses 5 volts (IIRC, can't remember for sure), so you probably wouldn't need as many batteries as you used here.

why dont you just plug your psp into the wall and charge it... im sure your not gonna be away from an outlet playing your psp for over 16 hours without seeing an outlett you can plug into... all though this is inventive it is also stupid.. use your knowledge in electronics and soldering to some how hooking up a flashdrive or portable mini hard drive to our psp now that would be sensible and awesome!

yah dont b hatin son. im just doin this to pass the time. i dont know about you but i dont take my charger everywhere i go. and no thanks to making the hard drive. u can fuck ur PSP up by trying, i aint gona

yea 4 sho man. some guy made his out of a deck of cards (the box) it looked pretty tight. I might try that. IN a lil bit im going out to pick up 5 more 9v batts, some more connectors, solder if i need it, and some LEDs. The supply store i go to has noooo security @ all so i steal all of the firewire ports i need. lol. @ 50 cents a pop im makin off with like 5 bucks! woohoo. Ill try n jack the LEDs too.

Ill post more pics when i make the LED model. I finally got a fuckin Dremel tool! Ugh its gona make cutting the tin so much easier.

Hey, stop duoble posting. And How much charge do u get off the "Little Brother"? And, Its not so hard to do it for PSP. This is my guess. The PSP uses 3.6V, rioght? So instead of the Voltage that the iPod uses, (I dont have an ipod, so i dont know wut it is.) U make it go down to 3.6 volts. See here's the thing. The PSP uses ONE metal piece to charge off of. Since the PSP uses a MUCH more common charging connec tion, it will be easier to finfd the piec than the iPod's firwire port. Now, With the iPod, u have to afigure out how many volts go to each port. Notuicing the slightly confusing layout of the wires from the batteries. Theoretically, this should be much easier to make for the PSP. The only dilema is the connection. Now, notice ur PSP charger. It takes in 120V, and converts that into 5V. Now, I dont want to open my charger, even tho i have 2, I might, but dont want to, But if u could have a look inside it swoyld eb a bit easier. See, the PSP requires its little plug. All u need is to open the converter form ur charger and find out if U cabn make it smaller to fit into the Altoids case with the batteries. Or u could get the same components found inside the adapter to do this. Now u need the little plug that is used to charge. ( I would lke to try to wrap it up and make it spring loaded inside the bopx, but way too hard.)

So pretty much, for this, u nees a different connectuion, But since the iPod has a Plug that goes into the ipod and then the plug goes into the port of the charger. And the PSP is backwards, It has a port on the PSP and the charger is the one that is the plug. In better and actually technical terms, the PSP is a female port and the charger is a male port. The ipod is a weird one tho. The ipod has a female port and the charger has a female port too, but it uses a wire with two male ports to connect them.

CONLUSION: The difference is how u place ut the batteries to et the correct voltage. Since the PSP needs 5V to go into it, just use a buch of AAs or AAAs. And then u need the charge wire to come out of it. DONE! Simple, And once I find the plug in a store, I will try this out.

yah, i have 2 AAA holders w/ the black and red wires but they both equal 6volts when put together. i cant think of a battery combonation that woud amout to 5. OH i bought some on and off switches! lol, thats gona be sick. Im STILL working on the newest model Version3 lol. its going to have a red blinking LED (12v) and an on/off switch (because the LED would remain on unless you took a battery out which is a pain in the ass)

also, u wouldnt want his lil brother lol. hes a piece of shit. i did put a lil orange LED on him tho

oh and raider, the ipod charges @ 12volts. Heres pics of my progress:

BAM ill post pics when im done. right now im wiring the on/off switch..

IRA is right tho. u would get tons of use out of it. jsut be careful and dont put it in a hot space. i was comin home from the gym on my bike w. it and fuckin alkaline was alll over my bag when i got home.

I have a little can of rhino lining laying around I'm going to paint that on the inside of my tin to cope with some heat issuses.

The only real problem I've had with the tin getting hot is where a exposed wire or contact touched the tin. Thats when the rhino lining comes in handy :)

shit, thats ghetto.

I wouldn't use that toggle. I'm going to put a plastic nub on mine

basicpimp
08-05-2005, 03:00 AM
lol i kno its hella ghetto. the toggle actually works great. ive been tesing it for the past 10 mins. batteries are @ normal temperature, no overheating. output is a 12 volts even with the LED running. i have to toggle set up to cut power to the batts. and LED

its ghetto fabulous. IRA u said somethin bout a nub? could u gime a link to what it loks like

basicpimp
08-05-2005, 03:01 AM
ok holy shit. right when i posted that one of my AAA batteries blew up. lol fuck. i dont know why..IRA do u think its the toggle or LED?

Mitwang
08-05-2005, 03:53 AM
i think its the toggle. if you turn it off then on too fast it could overheat
