View Full Version : The UnOfficial Stop The Upgrades PsP Thread...
I would like to take the responsibility of starting a petition against sony putting updates on their future games.
I know a company has to keep their hardware to a standard which one should only be allowed to do what the system was designed for, but there is reason behind this. As said in numerous places, people are thinking of boycotting games that come with updates. Companies other than Sony may be considering not shipping their games with the forceable updates. Sony will lose sales on games.
Riding along that note, if Sony decides to prevent us from using homebrew, sales in PSP units will go down as well. I know plenty of people who bought their PSP's for the cool stuff that is possible with homebrew applications. Perhaps Sony could make the updates voulentary to cover up security holes seeing that the PSP will soon be surfing the net.
So if we could all get together as a team and petition against Sony, we may just have a chance of stopping Sony's updates on their future games.
Thanks for reading;

we should all send sony corporate a letter saying running homebrew software aslong as its not in violation of any copyright is our right and they should not force us to run code restricting our right to run legal user made apps.
You make it sound like what they are doing is illegal. None of this involves any "rights" we have when we buy a PSP. Honestly why would they allow us to run homebrew when it would obviously detract from sales of their products (other games). This is the exact same situation that the Xbox modding community faced except Sony is actually being nice enough not to force update us when we pop a disk in.
I'm not trying to be negative about it but you have to face the fact that you can send all of the letters you want but in the end it is all about the money for them.
EDIT: It also has to do with protecting themselfs from future piracy. If they allow unsigned code natively then its only a matter of time before someone releases a iso loader and then what the hell would have been the point of them spending all that time with setting up encryption on EVERYTHING. Do you really think they would want to waste all of the time (and probably money) they spent in that?
except Sony is actually being nice enough not to force update us when we pop a disk in.
Not allowing you to play a game that you bought without upgrading seems like forceing to me, anyone else with me?

notice how i said force update when you "POP THE DISK IN". i never said anything about actually playing the game and that wasnt my point to begin with, i was obviously referring to how Microsoft automatically updates your dashboard when you put a newer game in WITHOUT ASKING. Thus why i was comparing this to what the Xbox community faced.
The more you read the more you learn.
And think of it, look how good XBOX sold, Microsoft tried, but it seems that they almost gave in. Xbox sold alot because of the modding business, and look at it today Still Selling. All consoles will sell better if they are "Hackable"
Its not proven that it will sell better, but just think... To choose between a Gamecube, or a system Exactly like GC but able to play burnt games with a mod chip... The modable one will sell better because of its capabilities.
Im not saying to Sony to screw up like Dream Cast did :P but still, like IRA said, we should be allowed to run games that aren't coppy-written or pirated.
-My modded xbox has no problems whatsoever what updates, I can still turn the chip off to play games online. I still buy games. The chip is just almost to "Try" games or to play homebrew. Simple as that...
Im not saying anything you are saying is wrong, its just that Sony can give in a bit...

I understand that in the future it may hurt sales (if people can boot things off of the psp) because people may find a way to run PSP games of off the memory stick. But for now I think it helps sales of the psp. For example I was playing my psp in class and a few kids I know saw me playing SNES games on my psp. One of these people went out and bought a psp and I set up the emulators for him. He had no intention of buying a psp untill he saw all the cool stuff that could be run on it. I have 2 other friends considering buying one because of all the hombrew that they saw me running on it.
So for now I think that sony should relax and just let people do it. They are hurting themselves by doing this. They should allow people to run hombrew just make the UMDS uber secure so that people cant make umd dumps. I think that would be the way to go. And if that dosnt work at least wait untill people make a launcher before they go crazy. And they can just figure out a way to allow certin types of hombrew and block things that run PSP games. That may sound like a hard or impossible thing to do but they seem to spend a lot of time on their security so they can get crackin on this and stop hurting themselves!
Also, what are the 2 companies who can make memory stick DUO sticks? SanDisk and guess who? SONY. Even if we found a way to play games off a memory stick, we would be buying those expensive things from SONY! It's win win for them!
