Font Mod for 6.20 via PSP Filer & HBL; And A Little Somethin’ Else!

The PSP scene is alive and you found it — the #1 spot for all your PSP hacks. And this hack you’re about to read comes from my main man MaX SLayeR, by way of Master of Shadows over at PlayStationLandia (see source).
It’s been discovered that using PSP Filer 4.4 Kernel 3.xx, which seemingly works best with Half Byte Loader, you’re able to access (read/write) the PSP registry in flash1. So if you follow the steps below you can customize the XMB font by redirecting the fonts folder from flash0 to your memory stick. Lets get started:
- Download the fontmod package below; it includes PSP Filer 4.4, fixupreg3, and fonts to try out.
- Run PSP Filer via HBL; press R + Left to go into “Hacker Mode.”
- Press start to move over to flash1.
- Copy the registry folder to the memory stick.
- Open the file “system.dreg” in a hex editor; Google for one.
- Change “flash0:/font” to “ms0:/fontmod” (or ef0:/fontmod if you’re on a GO).
- Place the files from the registry into a folder with the files from fixupreg3, then run the .exe.
- Place the new registry files back on the memory stick.
- Place the fontmod folder in the root of the memory stick (or GO storage).
- Run Filer, enter Hacker Mode, and copy the registry files from the memory stick over the files in flash1:/registry/.
- Hit Home and exit to the XMB to see your new font.
That should be it. Now, real quick, we aren’t responsible if you damage your PSP. Messing with flash memory poses a potential risk; however, it’s unlikely you’ll cause a brick by performing the above. If you do mess up the PSP will prompt you to recover flash1 anyway.
Oh, and by the way, if it wasn’t clear in this post — a 6.20 kernel mode exploit has been confirmed — more on that later!

Since when was the font stored in Flash1?
it’s not, the registry is, that defines the path to the fonts, which are on flash0, but you’re gonna change that to your memory stick and load the fonts from there.
So it’s more of a rerouter than a replacer?

if the means CFW on all PSPs I might finally have an excuse to buy a go. My 2000 is falling apart and I’d rather just buy a go then by a new battery, bigger memory stick, and replace the screen for a 3rd time.

I just had a really odd thought, but if this program can change the registry of where the fonts are, then could it change the registry of all the flash0 modules themselves are. and if that’s the case then it would be possible to run cfw on psp 3000′s again(i don’t know about the go, i mean dont’ they do something to where you can’t run older firmware like the slims do??)
what someone should do who has the experience is copy all the files from flash 0-1 and decrypt them and then add what they want back into the registery. If we can access the recovery menu then we are set.

trouble is if i removed my memory card it cant read the fonts, what if i put the fontmod folder in flash1 and redirected to there, and then had a load of fonts in my memory card, and when i wanted to change i used filer, would that work?

Ohh man. I just recently got the Big Boss Bundle under the assumption I’d never get CFW on the thing, and now it’s looking more likely than ever! You guys are real troopers, let me tell you. This is excellent news.

You can use the Half-Byte Loader + Patapon 2 Demo Exploit to run some homebrew and emulators. Don’t expect any CFW in the future, or ever.
If you’re interested, go to advancedpsp.tk and navigate to the Half-Byte loader section of the PSP forum.

A Font Mod is something that changes the default font on a PSP, to a font that was not intended to be on the PSP. Times New Roman, for example.
Does this fontmod affect the font in games too?
For example, Final Fantasy Dissidia menu font is the same as system.

This reminds me of the time those guys created a HEN for 6.10 and refused to release it for anybody outside of their team as a “statement”. I’m hoping this “no enabler” thing is somehow part of the limitations of this kernel exploit, and not the developers of the scene cockteasing end users again. =[

I think cayotebean just doesn’t want to code a HEN. I’m sure it’s in his capabilities, and he has enough access, it just takes a lot of work, and maybe he doesn’t want to do it. As greg said, someone else may pick it up and develop it. I hope its not a statement too, we’ve already had one from Davee and I think he got the message across extraordinarily well.
why is it that devs don’t wanna release an enabler? from what it seems, psps users are fading. there just aren’t that many great games out there to sustain it. but lets say a psp enabler does get released. more people would consider buying a psp then which is probably better than the state it is in now. i mean if people wanted enablers they could always go back to psp1000-2000s but because the pspgo has so little pros, that i believe an enabler will only help and not harm the scene. sony’s latest offer for 10 free games only helps to prove my point as they see that the many craptastic games aren’t going anywhere
When doing this with a psp go does anyone else always get a blue screen? I tried this without a memory stick and it kept blue screening. Then I deleted everything in the fontmod folder and i clicked O and it repetitively kept blue screening and wouldn’t do anything till i stuck my memory stick in and it rebooted to normal. When you change the system.dreg and then move it onto flash, do you have to keep going threw psp filer and putting that on there if it blue screens? I dont really understand how to make the fonts change… I wouldn’t have asked this if I haven’t already spent 5 hours trying to get it to work on my go.. its 6.20 btw

WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT PRESS HOME AND QUIT YOU WILL GET (BSOD) BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH JUST PRESS SELECT AND START AND IT WILL WORK :)
ok never mind i figured it out. I guess when I was doing the part where you use the exe program after changing the directory of where it loads the fonts I did that step inside the psp instead of on the computers desktop. after i did that and put them in there it finally loaded it up. But I copied my font files that my psp go had already to the storage and then added in the file that changes the font. It probably didn’t need that but either way I think the reason some people might not be getting it to work is they are doing it on the psp instead of the comp. And @ chazz, dont think so, psp filer doesn’t even detect my memory stick. But the only way i could keep it from constantly blue screening repetitively was to put that in and it stopped. Don’t worry about putting any of these files on the memory stick of a go it doesn’t affect it in any way from all i’ve done with it. Good luck other go users
I made my own fonts and they work perfect so if i can change the font i wonder if i can change the game boot too without bricking it some one please reply

I personally tried this mod, but ended reversing it when I realized that when you need to input somethings (ex.: your name or code for a PSN prepaid card) you don’t see the text you type anymore, which is annoying and frankly if it break that, what else… so I’m not taking any chances.

I did everything and when i exit filer my go have a blue background and says in every language that the system file is corrupted and press O to restore, and then everything is like before, no what i ve done wrong??
I honestly don’t get why Gen or any of the other teams get their finger out and produce a 6.20 cfw, and of course release the damn thing. HBL can get homebrew working so the “most if not all homebrew may not work” excuse is a load of bollocks. They just don’t want to share their fruits with mere mortals like us less than supreme non-hackers who just want homebrew goodness on our PSPs.
Just think people, I bet Gen are loving their hacked PSP3000/Gos with 6.20 firmware and absolutely NO need to downgrade or use other utilities to play newer games.

Ive only had a psp for 4 months and ive got a 3004 with 6.20 on it and im not gona moan because when they want to produce CFW they will with there own time … and ive bein on the scene for 3 months and i have a huge amount of respect for anyone that is helping out this community :D so sit back and relax if someone doesn’t pick up the project its up to them ….
The reason being they’ve already released CFW before for the masses, and had no qualms about it whatsoever. I know the teams have alot of work on their hands coding HEN/CFW/homebrew, it’s just they need to start figuring out the 6.xx firmwares and the newer “un-hackable” PSPs. I’m all for people getting into “the scene” and hacking too but not all of us spend 8/9 hours a day on our Linux/Mac or Windows box. People have shit going on too not just hackers..and btw I’m not a kid either. =P

to those who have a problem with the 3000, the hardware isn’t the problem, i’ve got a psp 3000 with ofw 5.51 so it seems that the problem is based on the firmware ’cause mine works fine with that hack/exploit

1-Get HBl with via Patapon 2 DEMO
2-Download the files with filer,fontmod and fixupreg3
3-Run filer via HBL
4-Enter Hacker Mode R and left
5-Move to flash1 with start
6-Copy registry folder to ms0
7-Open system.dreg with Hex Editor
8-Change flash0:/font to ms0:/fontmod
9-Place the registry files with the fixupreg3 files and run the exe
10-copy the new files to the registry folder in the PSP
11-Run filer via HBL
12-Enter Hacker mode press R and left
13-copy the registry files from ms0 to flash1
14-Exit to XMB and there u have a blue screen

@PspGoBrew93 On a PSP Go, you copy the memstick files to your Go Hard Drive instead — read through the instructions CAREFULLY! Hope that answers your question!

@PspGoBrew93 ATM, all that’s available for the PSP Go is the HBL, which you can get from here: http://wololo.net/wagic/hbl/ . It can load most homebrew, but currently does NOT work on 6.30 OFW. Hope that answers your question! (Get Revision 95!)

Hey. I need some help please! I have a psp 3000. I used the hex editor to change it to flash0:/font to ms0:/fontmod. I put the fontmod folder on my root.I copied the system.dreg back to the registry folder. Then, i quit and my font is the same! Please help. Thank you!

OK NOW!!! :D Look guys. When I did the final step, I rebooted my psp without exiting pspfiler. Just do a full reboot when you’ve finished while in pspfiler. ;) Sorry bout the noob questions guys.

@0M9H4X The half-byte loader is compatible with all firmwares between 5.05 to 6.20 but NOT 6.30, so yea, 6.00 should work. Hope that answers your question.

Hey guys! Awesome that you can actually get KERNEL access now, isn’t it? So you we’re saying that it just redirects the font path, huh? Couldn’t you do a similar thing to one of the registry files so that it redirects flash0:\ (ZERO) to the memstick or GoHDD? An e-mail would be appreciated… jivan.pal@googlemail.com .
