Sony on PSP Piracy and ‘Big, Big Titles’ This Year
greg | February 23, 2010
Industry Gamers have an interesting article concerning the state of Sony and their PSP business. In a recent conversation with Rob Dyer, SCEA Senior Vice President of Publisher Relations, he says it like this:
I think we had a great lineup last year. The biggest problem that plagued PSP was piracy; we have not been able to slow that down. We think we have some answers going forward, but we’re not ready to talk about that publicly at this point. So we’re working on fixing that, because that’s been a big problem. Publishers, when they put out good games, are not getting the same sales results that they got a few years back. So piracy’s been a big issue and we’re working on that very diligently to bring about some solutions.
Wait a minute… What do you mean you haven’t been able to slowdown piracy? The PSP-3000 isn’t [fully] hacked yet; you can’t play ISOs on that if you’re running firmware later than 5.03, which I’m sure many are. No ISOs for the PSPgo either. I’d say later firmwares seem pretty solid in terms of hackability or downgrading, short of those save game user mode exploits, which haven’t lead to any piracy yet. What firmware version are PSPs shipped with nowadays anyway? Hell, Sony even introduced the mandatory online registration for games like SOCOM FTB 3. So I think, for now, you’ve no doubt pumped the piracy break. And PSP-Hacks will be the first to say it: good job.
Furthermore, Dyer goes on:
We still have a very robust lineup this year from third parties on the PSP, starting with Metal Gear Peace Walker. I won’t go through the whole lineup because I want our third-party partners to make those announcements, but there are some big, big titles coming out this year and you’ll see those announcements at GDC, DPS (Destination PlayStation) or E3.
Big titles eh? Oooh, can’t wait to download ‘em all! Jokes — I support the game developers and you should too. We don’t condone piracy; but hey, if you’re a starving student who loves video gaming, we understand. Oh, and see you at E3 in June!
Needless to say, Dyer didn’t comment on any PSP2 speculation.
What do you think: Big things poppin’ for Sony and the PSP in 2010?

Just because the Newer Playstation portables can’t run ISO’s doesn’t mean the older generation of PSP’s can’t.
All games are backwards compatible for all systems so piracy is still a big issue, just because they’ve managed to secure 1 Portable doesn’t mean the other 3 revisions are safe (3k can run ISO’s even the 2k’s – 88v3′s can also).
Until Then, They either make better games or let the downloading continue.
Well they can’t fix the 1000 or 2000 non-88v3s since the fundamentals are fully hacked (you can just pandora ‘em). They can stop selling them though, which I believe they have. And 3000 models are likely shipped with something newer than 5.03. The only people capable of pirating are the ones who jumped on the PSP bandwagon early. Mind you, there are probably more of those than PSPgo or 3000 (5.50+) owners right now.
Yeah, if you have an old(er) PSP then your all set. But if yours broke recently (like mine) it is EXTREMELY hard to find a hackable still on the shelves. I had to go to 6 stores the other day just to find ONE PSP 3k that wasn’t above 5.03 firmware.
LOL lucky me.
My red PSP-3000 had the 4.05 on it :3
If they made a PSP with the features that PSP fans want I bet alot of people would drop their old ones and get it (im talkin about dual analog sticks and touchscreen for example) and in this they could put piracy prevention measures into it, while making heaps off the psps.
I’m not sure I understand all the want of a touch-screen on the PSP. It’s perfectly fine without one. I very much prefer tactile controls, and having both would make for a bit of a dumb design challenge on the part of Sony. Sure, touch-screens are cool, but they’re not necessary on this type of device, at all.
I would much rather see time put into a higher resolution display and better internal hardware. Give me a PSP with an equivalent to a 1gHz Snapdragon ARM processor, some hardcore GPU capability, and a good 128-256mb of available system RAM, and I’m set. A second thumb-nub would be great, but I’m content with just one.
thats why I said an example, you cant say anything on this site without people complaining about something, I can bet someone will think that they are a smart ass and write one of their smart ass comments. (btw SkuddStevens I wasnt calling u a smart ass)
Well, I’d love to have dual nubs. That and quality fps’ would make me drop my 2k and buy me a new one right away. And if the activation problem persists I won’t ever go legit… Can’t download from PSS anyhow :(
I think the main reason why sales are not as good today as in the past years, is that the PSP is getting OLD. I got two, I hardly pay any attention to them today, if I choose to waste my time on video games I rather spend it on the PC or PS3. The PSP needs to get better resolution and faster. basically we want a PSP3. That would get me back into buying new portable games. Still games are much more enjoyable on your 60 inch LCD screen with blasting sound… So to sum it up, when the PSP came out, it was WOW, now its just BLAH… Still it’s all the homebrew that keeps it interesting to keep up with.
Personally, I feel online registration for games is a phenomenal idea moving forward. It’s a logical extension of the CD Key concept PC games have been running on for years, and with relatively easy internet connection on all consoles and handhelds at this point, there’s really no downside. Hell, it’s a great opportunity for game retailers to offer in-store activation in the event the customer doesn’t have a wireless access point at home.
I mean, I’m no saint in terms of game piracy on my PSP. I always download a game first, and then buy it if I like it. I don’t have the money to buy or rent everything I want to try and risk it being a waste. But I’m all for reasonable copy-protection, because piracy really does take away from what we get in terms of great games (not in a sense that the developers lose money, but in that when the publishers find they’re making diminished sales, they cut developers and we lose future titles).
I’m really looking forward to what Sony has in store for the PSP this year, even though I feel a serious hardware update is in order. Admittedly it’s a little sad that the iPhone can outperform a dedicated gaming handheld. Hopefully we see some great things.
it actually really is sad that apple is letting jailbreaks by while sony is doing everything they can think of to stop us.
as for me, i think the developers need their revenue, but i don’t want a bad game, and i have no other choice than to download the game and buy it if i like it.
however, i think that sony should stop blocking hackers on their system because of iso/cso loading capabilities.
If you think about it, the psp can do virtually anything besides playing games that you should own on custom firmware, and sony is denying of us of what we purchased for $180 a long time ago.
i think that sony should let us have what we purchased instead of chaining us to what they have.
Sony has done a lot to prevent piracy. I don’t see why they would say that piracy hasn’t slowed down. Newer PSPs and ignorant people that updated their firmware above 5.03 completely killed the piracy race, even though the older PSP users are still having fun with ISOs. The PSPGo restricts access to the flash0 by third party software (still can’t explain how ARPSP works). The PSPGo also has a different firmware update file than the rest of the PSPs to support it’s other features, so a SEPARATE CUSTOM FIRMWARE MAY HAVE TO BE MADE. I usually like to try before you buy, and piracy isn’t one of my favorite things. I only have around three pirated games still on my PSP, (compared to the twelve on my DS) and I ususally buy the game if I can. I think it was smart to have online activation for FTB3, Sony really got smart. If you put the nVidia Tegra chip in the PSP, along with better graphics card, I really wouldn’t care about piracy. Some iPod Touch games have better graphics than the PSP (such as MGS4PO). Hopefully someone will figure out how to induce recovery mode like the Pandora in newer PSPs.
Sony is trying their hardest to stop piracy.Which I have completed their goal.I mean they got new motherboards for the PSP Slim,PSP 3K is harder to hack,PSP GO not even.So why they still complaining. They are doing much better than Apple with the jailbreaking. So Sony don’t complain you’re doing much better than other company with piracy.
Quick little comment. What the hell does he mean when he says “when they put out good games, are not getting the same sales results that they got a few years back?” I mean the sales a “few” years back were total crap since publishers DID NOT PUBLISH good games a few years back. Sure there were some, but they were a dime a dozen. That happened due to piracy.
Not to mention that piracy affects sales little to not at all in most cases. All those downloads do not equal possible sales. Only about 1% or less of those people would have actually bought the game, the others would never buy the game because they either do not have the money, or they just don’t want to spend money on it. I hate the medias overblown concept of piracy.
Piracy and theft are some of the worlds oldest professions. I am sure they won’t be going anywhere.
I didn’t mean to write a dime a dozen, I meant to write something along the lines of “they were like finding a diamond.”
Personally I think the online registration does more harm than good, and they know it. How many of us buy used games, share with siblings and friends, and rent? Registration kills all that.
If piracy is a problem, here’s a thought: stop ripping off your customers and making them want to pirate. No, you won’t (ever) stop everyone, but you can certainly stop contributing to the problem.
Re: suggestions above: Touch screen and second nub would certainly be a good thing. Crazy CPU and GPU are going to murder battery life.
You comment about needing a Touch Screen, That’s what a DS is for, let alone an iPhone/Touch. If Sony released a Touchscreen for their portable you’d complain about non responsive controls due to the fact the PSP’s CPU would be under powered to run the Game + the touch screen on top of that.
I personally believe the PSP needs a new hardware over haul so we can see some half decent games with some respectable framerates/graphics, Although graphics don’t make up a game it’s something thats held the psp back for awhile considering how old the hardware is.
It would cost them nothing to upgrade the CPU to at least a standard of 600Mhz+ This would offer many benefits and support for more in-menu features down the road.
but Sony likes to spend its money in anti-piracy tactics and security and just look at how that has happened in the past.
I would love to one day see a *use-able* port of Linux desktop/kernel to the hand held.
Upgrading the gpu and cpu wouldn’t kill battery life and would actually probably increase battery life. They keep going to a smaller scale of transistor which increases the potential speed while reducing the energy usage. That means the newer cpus and gpus actually use less power while saving energy.
Actually, buying games 2nd hand is hurting the developers more than piracy, why dont they introduce a pay to play concept, like a monthly subscription $30/Month, and you may download and play any game you want as much as you want. I’m sure 20-30,000,000 monthly subscribers would give more income than current sales…
Sadly as much as I hate to say it, whatever they did with the Kingdom Hearts title really worked, and that’s only because it was on a read only format, Like the UMD. I think this just made a huge point for keeping the umd.
It’s been done, funny how they thought it couldn’t be done but yes it has, the AIO guys did it as soon as the FTB3 game released and it was under raps for a while but as usual one has to ruin it for everyone. So the release of the FTB3 Psnabler is at the site and I’m not sure if it’s gonna be a full public release or not ( Meaning other sites ) but again Sony needs to step up their game.
Fail on their behalf once again folks, but I guess better luck next time is in order huh….
I heard a rumor that, due to a firmware upgrade on a ps3, it (the ps3) can detect your psp’s firmware and will ‘phone home’ if it see’s a firmware other than the official one.
Since they really cant do anything because you hacked something you own, im sure the only thing that will happen is they will send you a letter about how piracy is wrong.
Just because you have hacked firmware doesnt mean your a pirate.
They can’t contact us except through psn. Even knowing our ip, that’ll only give them the major region through which our connection comes from. Rumors rarely are true.
Piracy is wrong! That said, wth does he mean by “Publishers, when they put out good games, are not getting the same sales results that they got a few years back.”
The PS was hacked, the PS2 was hacked, now finally they made a system that wasn’t fully hacked for almost 5 years, and they are complaining about not having enough revenue due to piracy?
Something is fishy!!! Sure they are not making as much revenue as they would want to, but then again – who does??
They should stop complaining, and maybe use some of their surplus wins from the PS3 to bump up developers wages in China and Japan!
Cause Piracy is bad, Slavery is worse!!
Piracy on the PSP requires very little investment. To take full advantage of PS2/PSX hacking, you’d have to buy cds and other storage media on which to put pirated content. On the PSP, just use your memorystick to house the pirated content and voila. So… that’s why. It’s easiest on PSP to pirate.
$ony is going to do the same shit that many developers for recent PC games have done. They`ll include some over elaborate form of anti-piracy protection that will not only present an obstacle that hackers will overcome in the end anyway, but it`ll piss off legitimate users as well. Look at the PC release of GTA4; it had online activation and it was cracked in the same fucking day it was released. Now look at FTB3; if you buy it used, it`ll cost 20. That’s right, 20 FUCKING DOLLARS on top of what you paid for it to activate it online. That`s too much for just playing one PSP game online. How much is that compared to a subscription to Xbox live? And how many games can you play online for that subscription?
That`s bullshit. And that`s why PSP will be the last handheld I`ll ever own.
I love how you sony fanboys toss out xbox live as a reason not to buy a xbox console. I mean, hell, its not like I have to put up with shitty servers like I do on ps3, instead I put a game in and push ‘xbox live’ on multiplayer. Guess what, instead of getting a sign up screen and hoping it works the first time I go straight to the main server screen. Fuck sony for not consolodating all of the online shit into one login, and fuck fanboys for using xbl as a crutch.
/facepalm
You completely misunderstood my point. lrn2fuckingread
Dunno what you’re talking about, PS3 servers sucking… I don’t experience any problems, and it’s free. Instant sign-in, lag free play (when my connection’s how being whored).
I guess this means big things are coming up in the time to come. Sony really is ambitious, yeah? Then again, piracy is always possible one way or another. Its all in due time.
Yer it makes me sick ,i have hacked all 3 of my psps so i could play homebrew emulation and other apps like psp radio but its just not right that we can download a game within seconds of its release ,this is why there have been crap games on the psp up untill dec 09.we have been given little big planet, gran turismo, motorstorm ,silent hill, tekken 6 and a few other great games and a new pspgo to play it on but yet its still a no go ,the only reason we got those games are becase sony have prolly prommised devs that the pspgo will be unhackable but that doesnt fix the issue of the huge number of psp 1000/2000/3000 out there that are ready to play isos.
I think if sony want to kill the piracy once and for all then they need to offer large memory options to all current psp users at a fair price and force the user to update to ofw if they wish to buya new game ,as in the only way you can get a psp game is through the store download option.
no more umd support.
I actuly want somy to do this ,im happy with the free ride i have been given for the past few years ,i would keep that my hacked psp from yesteryear and if i want new games and online functions then i would go official.
Sony would be shooting itself in the foot if it went all download only. Not everyone cares to waste 5+ hours of downloading just to play their first game. That`s why the PSPGO failed so hard.
The pspGO has not failed, I know several people who are not pirates and buy games off of psn with it. The PSPGO is only hated by PIRATES, those who believe that sony owes them something. Your the same kind of person who buys a cd player and then bitches because you deserve to play dvd’s with it.
Your the same person who will love pspgo when its hacked.
I’m not completely sure if this post is even worth replying to.
lmgtfy.com/?q=psp+go+sales+figures
Seems to me that not a whole lot were exactly enthusiastic about a handheld that costs $50 less than a PS3 that requires hours of downloading just to play their first game. Not to mention digital only games can’t be rented or bought used, and I may be wrong about this one, but games on PSN don’t come down in price either.
F.Y.I.: I couldn’t care less if the ‘GO was hacked.
what’s wrong with waiting 5+ hours to download? Unless you actually played your psp non stop for 24 hours each day then this shouldn’t be a problem. And at least you don’t have to drive down to a store to buy the UMD.
Also there is always a way to get the game off of the psp onto a computer and as soon as that happens it will be on the internet fast. It will fail because of being a download only and it probably be the most pirated game ever as long as it is good.
The commercial end of the PSP is dead!!! Hombrew should takeover. They want to blame it’s short-comings on piracy, but if they would only create FUN and note-worthy games that contain a thing called quality which in return translates to what is known as value, maybe people would give up their hard earned CA$H and actually buy PSP games. Sony should just give-up and focus on the PS3 before that fails also…
I was playing World at War onn a IPhone, i mean thats crazy, itz better looking than a DS (Graphic and design wise) , and look how small it is……..
none of the games I have seen recently on the coming up list look any good. Modnation is the only one that looks good to me. Hate to say it but all of Sony’s “BIG” announcements are on gamestops’ list in the store for like the next year.
Piracy?
I dont even like parrots!
Cats are a better animal for pirates, gotta keep those rats off the ship ;).
Piracy will always be a never ending story.. Laws and officials might be able to minimize the piracy level a little bit, but i think it will still go on..
hahahahahaha hey sony make us fool they make that type of firmware that can easily hack by a noob if sony stop piracy nobody going buy there fucking costly game, I don’t have psp my friend have a psp a new one 3004 it is not hackable now but one day it will, Sony forget that psp is portable console if that fucking portable games r that much costly nobody buy psp,If psp buyer calculate that games cost nobody going to buy psp, sony is now so happy that they have made that firmware that no one can hack it like above 5.03+ they r wrong after the v5.03 which is not creaked yet they have loose there customer more than 50% customers really that im not saying its a report from sony we r not looser actually Sony is LOOSER………….. and that’s true
Fuck kid, learn to spell..
fck sony, ill fuck them in the ass, and say CFW hah bitch
indeed my peniz is a petey
I would have stopped playing my PSP within a year of purchasing it if it wasn’t for homebrew, and then eventually, piracy. I’m not saying it’s okay for me to download games, but whatever, I wouldn’t be purchasing the titles either.
The PSP is an old system, they just keep changing the look of it and doing minor tweaks. Lets face it the system is fading mainly because of the lack of good games.
If I wasn’t able to play playstation games on it, I wouldn’t play it at all anymore. Every PSP game I thought was going to be good turned out to be blah.
The DS actually has quite a few games I find myself playing.
One again the industry is blaming piracy for boring, poorly designed games. Not to mention that we are still in a recession…
This argument always remindes me of REM. They released their album for free online, asking that you donate what it was worth to you, even nothing. REM made more money on that album than any other they’ve released. The media labeled it a horrible failure because so few people paid for it compared to downloads.
By charging for the album, all those people that downloaded for free would probably not have bought it, a number of people that paid less than what they’d have charged may have decided not to bother, and the number of downloads doesn’t even take into consideration that someone that donated may have downloaded on to multiple computers.
But I’m rambling. It just kinda bugs me that people are so worried about how piracy lowers revenue, but never think that most of the people that pirated it probably wouldn’t have bought it anyway. (I’d probably not pirate games first if decent game demos were available)
there are starting to add keys for online play for games. kinda like how they do on pc games and xbox live titles. the latest socom and the new psu both use the new system. its a pretty simple and effectiv system the pc market has used for the last 10 years.
Homebrew > retail games
I would not waste my Bandwidth on most retail titles!
you know, if i wasnt a student and those darn games wouldnt cost 60+ bucks i wouldnt have a problem buying them…. it’s just that i CANT!
on my PS3 i only have 5 games, i have that machine since 2 years! biggest reason for that is the price of the games, i just cant afford..
second however, is that the games in general just lack well thought gameplay…
they all look nice and all that, they just miss the game element, like the oldies had it.. bomberman.. mario kart.. to name some…
also,.. split screen multiplayer is one of the biggest things i miss….
if only game developers and especially sony would listen to their consumers and build a console it would be the best ever!
handheld titles run around 30 to 40$. only console prices rose due to m$ making up excuses. also wii game prices did not rise there still in the 50$ mark. that was only a stunt my m$ and sony.
I have to agree with many of the comments already posted, though I’ll try and consolidate my revisions:
I won’t deny that Piracy, or rather, Sony’s LOUD wailing about piracy to the media, in front of game companies, has affected the number of Quality titles released for the PsP.
However, I also believe that people pirate on the PsP for two chief reasons:
1) Try-before-you-buy
2) Economic recession
A number of people have already posted here, saying they personally have downloaded many game ISOs, while feeling only a handful of them were actually worth buying. Game reviews? Bought and paid for, as far as my opinion goes. Hype and rhetoric at it’s worst, the majority of the time.
Also, does anyone have any serious figures about the average age group of PsP owners today? I’m going to step out on a limb and say that many of them are in the “pinching pennies for college” group. Add the current overall economic recession to this, and you have two powerful reasons for people to download an ISO and try the game, before parting with their minimum-wage earnings for a game, instead of school needs.
(^^^Just giving one example. Obviously not everyone is in the bracket I just described.)
Also, in terms of Custom FirmWare: Not all CFW users are pirates, as Sony would have you believe. When “official” game titles are lacking, people naturally turn to Homebrew to fill the void; to give them a greater return on the money spent for their PsP model of choice.
I personally enjoy NES, SNES, and Genesis games on my PsP, more than any “official” PsP titles from Sony. Playing Doom2 custom WADs, or POWDER, on the go? Or “LOCKJAW”?
(the greatest version of Tetris on the planet as far as I’m concerned)
Sorry Sony, you just got owned by FREEWARE programmers.
Final Thoughts: I want to see Sony support the PsP for another year, perhaps two. Beyond that, we need a TOTALLY new version of the system. PsPGO was nothing but corporate bigwigs trying to scam STUPID gamers into buying a system with insane copy protection, AND into throwing away their legit UMD discs, AND buying them again on PSN –All this to combat piracy, NOT to provide better games!
If the, lets call it the “PsP II”, does get invented and has a good game library, I’ll buy it. If not then I’m perfectly happy with my PsP 1000, and buying a Pandora to upgrade my Homebrew options once school finances are dealt with.
Thanks for the news post. It’s not that I didn’t already know Sony was still only interested in themselves, but it’s pleasing to see more people actually seeing the truth behind Sony and their tactics.
–DKnight
The PSP Go and 3000 with firmware 5.50+ coming soon CF’s for it, low sales is equal to CF. PSP 2 not for now too much money lose for Sony this year with GO is my opinion…sorry for my bad english.
Online activation and download games of store is imposible for countrys in latam where internet is still very slow and not for all. Here in latam the games prices are very high the “piracy” is only form of playing games on PSP…the PS3 not is prefered here by that details, Xbox 360, Wii, DS and PSP 1000/2000/3000 with 5.03 are best seller because are pirateable. Future portable console winner is the more easy to hack not very nice graphics, not very nice control only the more pirateable, Sony see to Nintendo DS only one upgrade 1.4 in DSi was protected after all flashcard “hacks” it and DS sales are still good. Sony open your console for homebrew not fight with hackers is more easy for all.
Heck, Ever since dax went out of the scene, everyone started to nearly give up, and by sony “statements” we suppose to think there new fw might be hack-proof? Even though the psp 3000 and PSPGo isnt hacked, its still hackable because of exploits. We might not know sony well, but sony dont know us very well!
Sony just make your psp game more affordable something like that. People are going to pirate because your games are freaking expensive. I hope someone release Cfw 6.10 or Cfw 6.20 that work in psp 3000.
GOOD luck to all hackers.<<<<<Just help each other.
As said before me, the PSP’s biggest problem is crap games
I got a second hand 2000 so I can use emulators and put games on my memory stick and the PS1 games that I actually payed money for, no way I’m buying them all twice
Metal Slug Anthology is a joke on the UMD compared to my MicroSD
Yes I “acquired” a few games to test them out, there’s a LOT of very bad PSP games out there, but had bought 14 games in the first month of getting my PSP, and 1 UMD because I thought it was 300 the game but it was the movie :(
I would have bought more but the only shops I have been in lately do not even sell PSP games, the PSP is getting the PC treatment
The PSP also desperately needed a 2nd analogue, what the hell were they thinking with just the one?
Roll on the PSP2 the only problems being it will be very expensive, this is Sony after all and expect at least a $10-$15 increase in game costs
At least Peace Walker looks good, 1 definite purchase there, we could do with another 5-10
This is what sony, or some hardware desiner needs to do.
Make a new system with all the bells and whistles, top of the line stuff for portability, and sell it at a pretty high cost. Make it also open source, provide specs on how the hardware is designed, and let people see it.
Don’t sell any games with it, in fact, don’t even go to publishers and say “hey we have a new system, will you make games for it?” just tell them “its open source, make something for it if you want”. in fact that could be your motto.
The deal with this is that hardware device will sell billions of systems, because everyone will want one because everyone will make homebrew apps for it. It would be an expensive device but customers would be happy to pay it, because they would have open source stuff, run linux on it if they wanted, whatever they wanted to do, or had the will to do on it.
Laugh if you want, but it just shows youre not sane, because if you look at how the PC got so big, it’s because it’s open source and everyone can make stuff that runs on it!!!!
WAKE UP PORTABLE HARDWARE DESIGNERS.. GREED SUCKS!
in other words, make a portable device for the good of mankind and reap the benefits.. not for you so you can reap the benefits
http://www.open-pandora.org/
You described it almost perfectly.
^ This.
The Pandora is exactly what the world needs. Can’t wait for mine. :)
I dont know about all of you man but for me I pirate for these reason..
-> bcoz GAMES are afterall just GAMES. there are things more important than it. why waste money on that?! why buy a GAME (even the greatest game ever) when after finishing playing that game it will be wasted.
-> its not bcoz of the high prices.. its just that it doesnt worth it..
You have a point there. i don’t want to buy a expensive game ether..
Looks like they’re using the “piracy” excuse for poor sales.
The psp should have been a ground breaking, “Must Have” piece of kit, but the poor marketing, and lackluster upgrades (just how many times can you redesign a case and flog it as a “new” piece of kit! Hell, the pspgo hasn’t even got a UMD slot, which feels like a backwards step, and a nod from Sony to acknowledge that they got the whole “propriety” game/video disc bit, horribly wrong! The least they could have done is add Dual Nubs!)
Look around now, and everyone is getting their quick gaming fixs on their NDS’s or Iphone’s, can’t remember the last time i saw someone playing a psp while sat in the bus stop!
Piracy is much more affluent and easy to do on the DS AND the iPhone,(hell, you don’t even have to know how to turn a computer on, to get piated games for the DS) but they still sell like hotcakes, and are slaughtering sales of PSP.
Sony need to reduce the cost of games, reduce the cost of the hardware, AND have a bit more “quality control” over some of it’s upcoming game releases, to stand a chance of clawing back some of the market share.(some of the full price games released over this past 18 months have been awful, and that comes straight from the mouth of my 14 year old cousin, who used to love his psp!)
What’s more, with the loss of the UMD on newer models, kids like my cousin can’t even go out and trade the games they’ve completed/got bored with, for other used titles. They seem to forget too, that not everyone has access to the internet in order purchase games, and that it makes the “doting grandmother, walking into a shop, and purchasing a game for her grandkid” or similar scenario, virtually obselete, unless they’re one of the more tech savvy pensioners, and thus, the loss of another sale!
They need to make games available on “copy protected” memory sticks. It’s not like it’s new technology, the older tomtom units used to do with their maps.
