Datel back at it… Action Replay for All PSP Models

greg | December 26, 2009

Despite Datel’s earlier shenanigans when they claimed PSP-3000 hackage with a Pandora-like battery, which, as you know, turned out to be a total sham. Well, this time ’round, it would seem they have actually accomplished something real… Whether they have an agreement with Sony to sign their EBOOT or they’ve actually cracked the signing/encryption process, who knows… Nonetheless, it’s an interesting conversation piece. Check out Datel’s Action Replay Demo for all PSP models and firmwares.

Wololo has confirmed it and I can say the same: Action Replay works on my PSPgo and PSP-2000. Hell, I’m even tempted to buy an Action Replay license key now. It’s pretty slick.

Anyway, what does all this mean? Well for starters — if it’s truly a hack — it’s highly unlikely Datel will reveal how they accomplished such a feat. Otherwise, it just means Datel has the dollar-dollar-bills to be Sony’s new BFF.

Download the Action Replay Demo and see for yourself.

First and I feel in a few months were going to see hacked PSP-Gos running user kernals. The future looks bright for hacked PSP’s…Thx datel

    • DOMINER258 says:

You people dont get it, people already know what the problem is, just how to fix it, for example

Standard Homebew PBP’s have several files in them, one of them is DATA.PSP, which homebrew games start with .ELF

but official games and Datel’s AR starts with
      ~PSP

So it is an entirely different coding all together!

  2. JC says:

Don’t thank them yet. Chances are, they will never say how they managed to even do this and second, even if they did, think about how much money they would charge for a downgrader?

    • Babkock says:

Pandora batteries only cost like, five bucks.

      • TotalRefill says:

Whereas doing it yourself is free. If they have a monopoly on the downgrading biz they could charge exorbitant prices and people would pay out the wazoo to get themselves one.

        • IceSky22AIZ says:

Already there are people out there charging for their “services” like downgrading and stuff. Now what? Geez..

          • Do you blame those that charge for PSP mod services ? It works for the customer so that they do not have to take the risk in bricking their systems for a few bucks…

          • IceSky22AIZ says:

Not really. But still, just ANYONE could do this sort of thing. All you require is some knowledge on the stuff, the materials and a tutorial.

It shouldn’t have to be that people have to PAY for something they could do for FREE. Well, that’s what I think…

        • Decius says:

Wow you are an idiot. If datel released a form of downgrader whether it be hardware and/or software. Someone could easily come by and steal the work, look at how its effecting the psp and then release it them selves.

It’s like trying to steal from pirates lmfao.

Datel isn’t going to be some mass market in which we will only have to rely on them for hacking newer generation of psp’s. Get ahold of your self.

  3. GOREslinger says:

If datel will even release the info on how they did it… They do have kernel access though… Hmmm Everything gets out sometime ;). Hope they haven’t sided with the enemy. Props.

  4. maddeath says:

Greg wtf I as aeochoa8 hit you guys up about this yesterday on twitter!!! Where’s my credit? Well at lest it made it to the site…

  5. Jay says:

Maybe Datel hired DA instead of Sony :)

    • just call me MR HELPER says:

      lol…haha funny =]

I enjoyed the one secound of humour that you have porvided me.

    • Kenneth says:

Anything is possible, I have said for a long time now that DA has broken the encryption but for good reason never shared it, maybe he needs some money and broke a deal with datel, I was right about DA being behind M33 back in the day and everyone thought I was nuts, I’m just saying. I have been working on the encryption my self I’m sure it’s not as crazy of an idea as you might think. I do doubt it was Sony who helpped them out, it would have been on the psn if they signed it.

      • HyperHacker says:

Any competent designers would’ve used one-way signature algorithm such as RSA. The key to decrypt is in each unit but the key to encrypt is hidden away at the central office and would be effectively impossible to break (taking up to billions of years on modern machines).

  6. DiGi-C says:

I’m no expert on hacking, but I had a thought, you can add your own codes, right? So could there be a possibility to get into the software somehow by injecting something into pretty much any game to create an exploit? I hope so.

I bought a license and its 110% on Go wi/ 6.20, though Gran Turismo either freezes or crashes and GTA: VCS glitches like hell with certain codes enabled (‘moon jump’ in particular)

    • d3stroyr says:

could you upload the folder in the root of your memory stick that contains the files for the program. with the info i could activate my copy and try to hack my psp 3000 ofw 6.20

    • HyperHacker says:

Yes, if you can in fact apply cheat codes that run during the game, the effect is precisely the same as a usermode exploit (and easier to develop as a bonus) – you just write your own code in wherever you want.

Of course that’s only usermode. It’s questionable whether this would require kernel access or not. If it does, Datel’s very likely to have left an exploit or backdoor. Many of their previous products such as Action Replay DS contained backdoors for running homebrew, and they code like crack monkeys so exploits would be very likely.

As well there is the question (having not watched the video) of what this thing actually does. Action Replay used to be a Gameshark-style cheat engine (Gameshark is in fact a rebranded Action Replay), but lately they’ve released all sorts of useless junk under the same name; hacked save files and media players and the like.

  7. scott says:

if homebrew comes out for the go ill jizz in my pants

  8. Xerczese says:

Am I missing something? Does is not work on CFW 5.50 GEN-D3? It only work on 6.xx and above?

    • Decius says:

I tried to actually do this on a custom firmwared PSP (You’d think I mean with CFW and all) But it kept giving me error code 80020001 or something similar. It appears that the “AR” Software is stored on your MS as X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE.

I’ve tried on 5.00 M33 the eboot but it would not work, Nor would OFW 5.03.

I guess in order for this to work your PSP must NOT be hacked? :D

      • flclfan says:

hmm… this has piqued my interest. I have 2000 with a T-85v motherboard and running GEN-D3. I’m gonna try running this.

  9. Luciddreamin says:

i didnt even know hacking devices were legal to sell

    • Death says:

Not true it’s just not endorsed by the system makers nor is it under warrenty if it breaks your system

      • Well, still they are not illegal… It is not technically illegal to mod a system either… What is illegal is if youre system is filled of downloaded games that you do not own… The word “backup” opens many grey shades of legal loopocity

        • 007ace says:

to be truley technical, it all depends on the mod. If your using copyrighted software (ie. a firmware) to create your mod, then yes that is copyright infringement, and illegal. thats the main reason that modding an xbox360 is illegal in some countries. I’d assume the same is true for the PSP, as its firmware is modified, and some of their copyright’d code is used/modded.
for it to be 100% legal, we’d have to have 100% custom firmware.

    • HyperHacker says:

Why back in my day your only options were to buy an off-the-shelf cheat cartridge, mail-order a horribly expensive “development” cartridge from a shady company in Hong Kong, or build your own. Hell, you can still buy them for DS at a few major stores. If you’re lucky they might even have some PS2 AR discs left.

They’ve declined in popularity not because of a law against their sales, but because of other legal and technical issues. It’s not just a matter of patching cartridge reads anymore – there’s encryption and signatures to deal with, firmware upgrades to immediately plug the hole and block your product before it even makes it to stores, and DMCA to make using the exploits illegal. (Not that this prevented Datel from releasing Wii discs that they knew would be useless within weeks… >.>)

Do note though that game hacking, “hacking” as you probably know it (i.e. cracking), and the proper definition of “hacking” are all very different things; only one is illegal.

  10. i wish i could be impressed by this release but…….i really dont know what it does..

  11. IceSky22AIZ says:

Action Replay is a cheating app of sorts. And it seems Datel came up with one to run on ALL PSP models, including OFW 6.20 shown in the vid up there.

This could mean alot of things. Either Datel managed to enable homebrew capability or something like that, or whether they have an agreement with Sony to sign their EBOOT or something along those lines, as Greg posted above…

  12. PSPsilver says:

I guess multiplayer games that use PSN are no longer safe from cheaters.

  13. Xerczese says:

If Sony signed their eboot would work on ant fw but still no luck on 5.50 GEN-D3.

    • just call me MR HELPER says:

hm so far kernal acess which AR provides most likely wont be compatible with any custom firmware, jugding from what i’ve read..which is like two oomments but right now i would beleive it t be the truth..but i doubt Datel was able to get an agreement with Sony to sign their eboot…theres cheat codes for numerous games, some of which are brand new, like Assasins and Tekken, most likely Sony wouldn’t be able to provide an agreement for all of these games as, Datel would need permission from all the Various COmpanies supporting each game, Ubisoft, Square Enix, are major ones that come to mind..itshighly unliekly that they have permission for this..nontheless its quite a feat to provide acess to kernal mode an a PSPGO and and psp 2000\3000 models… Iam expecting that right now thousands of developers and teams are working with Datel’s newsest release to crack this case.

      hmm cant wait..

LOl.. funny story, i opened “AR” and the first i game i looked for..Twisted Metal Head On wasn’y there..(Good game, classic love it, although there already cheats built in, but i wanted to see what they had).. secound game Socom Tactical Strike adn Bravo 3.. didnt have it.. i mean Bravo 3 is a classsssssssssiccccccccc infrastructure rules..and tactial is pretty slick to -]

      Then i gave up =]

      lol

  14. pehyang says:

The only thing i hope now is able to unbrick the psp MB TA-088v3

That all i hoping anyway nice release Thanks datel

  15. turd_ferguson says:

I’ve got 5.50 gen-d3 and this works fine on it.

    definitely works with CFW psp’s

  16. Dean Gullberry says:

No way that Sony made a deal and gave them signature code. Sony has always been against Datel, always.

  17. XAIN says:

i cant enter my full license key… why is that???
befor the 3rd dash its the limit!!!

  18. Jay says:

I think Datel signed it themselves look at the equipment they have access too and the level of their software developers. The only issue is I can’t think of a decent Datel product that has lasted. How do they make money?

  19. RedHate says:

Jim, their sheilds are still up!

  20. wak says:

maybe sony let this one go, with datel and other 3rd party storage manu’s taking M$ to court

  21. vshadowv says:

Just went to system update after downloading the AR Demo… I opted for it to look on storage media instead of online for the system update and it said it found an update for ver. 9.99, when I loaded the update it started up the action replay software… hope this might be of some kind of help… i’m a noob so I don’t know much about this…

  22. scoob says:

one more step in the rite direction boys!

  23. lol says:

That was not psp-3k but rather psp 1k or 2k.

  24. CircaF00t says:

    Doesn’t work here!

    PSP GO (Europe)
    Corrupted data! on MS

  25. some guy says:

can someone post the eboot file i dont have internet on pc

  26. Joe says:

Interesting to know that this works on any PSP on the 6.20 firmware. Just to amuse myself, I quickly reverted my 1000 back to OFW 5.00, then installed Action Replay. Still works! I’ve looked all over my memory stick contents, though. All I can find is the PSPAR folder in the root. Is the rest possibly placed somewhere in flash? Sorry if that sounds noobish, just a wild guess.

    • Joe says:

Er, nevermind. Accidently skipped Decius’ post, so it’s in the UPDATE folder apparently…

I sure hope this will lead to something awesome. :)

    • Joe says:

Just for a last test, I tried this on my untouched PSPgo still running on firmware 5.70. Yet again, still works. I really like where this is going.

  27. Alex says:

Couldnt just one person buy it and share it around for free?

    • SkuddStevens says:

Not as-is, no. If the software requires a license key, then it probably requires an internet connection to unlock, and wouldn’t do so should the key have already been used. And without being able to sign it, cracking the eboot would make it so that it only works on CFW. Which, of course, is all well and good if you’re just looking for a commercial cheat device for your PSP, but it wouldn’t do PSPgo or PSP-3000 (sans CFWE) users any good.

  28. Luciddreamin says:

with this, could it be possible to mess with the hack codes and make a psp go exploit somehow?

  29. viperware says:

Remember the Edison Carter cheat device for GTA:LCS? Didn’t that lead to one of the first public exploits? Although that was a modified game save. Perhaps a cheat code can be made to allow extra text input in a particular game and cause a buffer overflow? Or maybe a shell command instead of text input?

  30. I wish DAX was here. He would know what to do…

  31. Urabewe says:

Well I’m just guessing but, maybe Datel took an official update eboot, which is already signed and fiddled with it putting their action replay program inside of that. Then they made it firmware version 9.99 so that when Sony updates their firmware it will keep it from saying there is already a higher firmware installed. Basically the psp thinks this is a signed update eboot but, inside of it is the action replay so the psp sees it as an official update and runs it which loads the program.

They decrypted the firmware but instead of trying to make a custom firmware they used what they needed to make it stay signed and threw away the rest and inserted their program. I dunno just seems like the most logical way to do it. Like I said just a guess…

  32. Javier says:

this is going to definetly destroy the online for psp but as long nitepr has better codes than this well still be able to destroy ofw ppl online =D

  34. Shadowvar8541 says:

Just take a moment to stop and think, people. When it comes to computer code and programming, almost anything is possible. After all, any gaming device is basically a computer built for video games. So, something like this shouldn’t come as a surprise. The fact that it took this long does come as a bit of surprise.

Kind of makes ya wonder though, when is Sony just gonna throw in the towel?

  35. Krozoa says:

can the exe be moded to install and emulator or any other homebrew and not the AR??? im a noob at this so sorry my ignorance

  36. Shadowvar8541 says:

In theory, yes, Krozoa. That’s a valid question, too, so not ignorance. As far as it actually happening? I have no idea, and although I said almost anything can be done with code, there are just somethings that just can’t be done.

In the end, only time will tell what kind of possibilities may come from this. We’re just going to have to wait and be patient, which yes, does suck because I’m sure most of us aren’t a patient bunch, especially myself.

  37. wak says:

i would have thought that a re-programmed version could be used as a hen, change the files / commands that are run, and recompile the exe.
however, this would require knowing what each and every piece of code relates to (they may understand this sort of thing, i sure as hell don’t) and once a file is edited that much, does it remain signed ??
and really, if they know what the code is for, they could reproduce the code separately, not needing to edit the thing

if it has to remain the same exact size a lot of padding would be required, not sure how these things work really, im no programmer, just an idiot noob.
it may be handy for them to decompile the exe, and see what treasures they can find within…

  38. hitshot says:

So now I’m just wandering how much cabbage can they do out of it, has anyone really paid to fuck shit up?

  39. Krozoa says:

yea i read somewhere that the official firmware must be dumped in order to make a CFW, so the theory that i stated is out of the question in making a CFW, but at least homebrew can be done, at start is a start, as for me i can wait forever for a CFW if at least i have on or to emulators :(
thanks shadowvar8541 for clarify my question

  40. Shadowvar8541 says:

Wak-It depends on how they have the EBOOT signature coded and I’m sure if it was edited, the signing would be a 50/50 on whether or not it stayed.

Hitshot-Messing something up is always free, unless you actually fall victim to some sort of scam.

Krozoa-Yes, OFW (official firmware) must be dumped to make CFW. You’re welcome.

However, only time will tell, so whatever this may mean for homebrew, we won’t know until we know.

  41. hitshot says:

It’s clear that those peepshow datel scams have just injected the shit into updater and somehow it bypasses the genuine checking, but why the heck did they do that through the backdoor if they datel mutherfuckers had actually decrypted signing or whatever?, pardon my russian.

  42. bahemith says:

Ok..I have a psp 3001 6.20 and the cheats work fine..but I have NO in game menu..anyone else having this issue? please let me know

  43. Bret says:

My license code is too big to fit in.

  44. DatelAdmin says:

If you have any question about Action Replay PSPplease send me an email at brandondevonperry@yahoo.com

  45. scott says:

wow bullshit i bought it and its been 4 days and i havent gotten my key

  46. Lukas Platt says:

I have tried holding the r and home..thats normal..they told me I had to set UMD cache to off…that didnt help…I think they sold a product too soon without enough testing honestly…

  47. Lukas Platt says:

I have also no reformatted everything and started brand new and still no in game menu…and they will not give me an answer…so I think this whoile thing is a little shady

LMAO you really from datel? cuz im pretty sure ur not. if u really were from datel you prolly wouldnt speak english(from my past experiences) and you prolly wouldnt let people know your email, for obvious reasons.

  49. chris says:

will this update or something cuz kingdom hearts bbs is coming really soon and i want cheat ._.

    plz reply

  50. Contagioncode says:

Well I like to cheat too, but don’t tell my girlfriend. I gave her my AR ps2 disk and never seen her since. Third party apps means recode your homebrew. BOOSTER, where are you? Devhook that thing. Barely christmas and a Crappy new year, NO! Happy brew year.

  51. Mick0204 says:

this doesnt work on my go.
first of all it you have to install on the internal memory, if you put it on the memory stick it cant find it again to enter your liscense key. Once you have installed it the codes either dont have any effect (assasins creed) or your game wont start (motorstorm).

  52. oZmighty says:

The weird thing about this soft is still the fact that it runs under the update folder, so it most likely is not a collaboration with sony, and moreso, if you look in the SFO, the DISC_ID is MSTKUPDATE and the UPDATE_VER is marked as 9.99…
i just think it’s weird, and maybe with the new PRXdumper someone might see the mistery behind this update behaviour

  53. hyper hackers says:

isn’t the signed code stored in the hex file
If it is i might have a way to beat sony entirely
My idea was get the iso of a psp game and a umd of the same game and(UMD READER NEEDED) open them both up in hex workshop and compare the code somthing must be diffrent in the code since the psp only uses umd games now. IF YOU ALREADY TRIED THAT then i dn’t no what else to say

  54. guasy091204 says:

I have buy the full version and on the Gran Turismo its work perfect, but with God of War unless you finish a level and then you start again at the same level the codes doesnt work any sugestion. Thanks.
