PSPdisp v0.4 Released: Dual Monitors Using The PlayStation Portable

greg | December 13, 2009

Now with improved audio streaming — JJS’ PSPdisp… It’s a combination of two drivers and two apps that make it possible to use your PSP as a second display monitor. The video is what’s up.

You need a PSP running a custom firmware; most custom firmwares seem compatible, or a PSP using ChickHEN and CFW Enabler. On the PC side you need Windows 2000, XP, Vista or 7 — both 32 and 64 bit are supported. A multicore processor is also recommended.

PSPdisp v0.4:

  • New features:
    • new USB driver based on WinUSB, that is compatible with 64 Bit versions of Windows (no driver signature check problem)
    • previous libusb based USB driver still supported
    • new audio recording mode for Vista / Windows 7 which uses software loopback, no longer requiring a “Stereomix” or “What you hear” device
    • increased USB transfer speeds (60 fps reachable with all compression quality settings)
    • new “Uncompressed” quality mode, doesn’t apply any compression to the images resulting in less CPU load and best image quality
    • PSP CPU speed now configurable for USB mode
    • increased character limit for the IP address / server name dialog
    • IP address is now also shown on the WLAN tab of the options window
    • audio streaming can now be completely disabled in case of problems
    • new option to hide the mouse cursor on inactivity
    • new control file option for analog mouse cursor movement with the analog stick
    • added intaller option for creating a Windows-Firewall exception for PSPdisp
  • Bug fixes:
    • CPU speed control for WLAN mode fixed
    • fixed WLAN timeout problem mentioned in the v0.3 known issues
    • PSPdisp now stays in SideShow mode when the screen resolution or geometry changes
    • various interface bugs fixed
    • rapidly enabling/disabling or attaching/detaching of the PSP in USB mode would trigger an exception

This guy is a god at what he does man. This brew gets consistently better with every release. I’m not easily impressed. You have impressed me without fail. Insane props to you. My all time favorite brew btw.

    Show this guy some love.

    • TheKrimzonGhost says:

The purpose is to make the psp as functional as possible what I’ve done with mine is use the psp as part of a peripheral VR device with motion tracking IR LEDs,Wiimote parts and scripts using Glovepie to seal the deal.

      remember this site is PSP-Hacks.

It’s useful to have a view of your computer screen wherever you are. Remote control, being able to be someplace other than your computer, but still use it. I use it to talk to watch youtube and stuff while laying down. It’s a time saver and convenience thing, not everything has to have some huge fun-value.

  6. Cordelle says:

    @Erickson Silverio

this program is the best.. when im not at home i can still play comp games from my psp when im at freinds house or school

    GEN-D3 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • really!!?, whow!!..i think im gonna explore this plugin much deeper….i mean..playing your pc games with ur very own psp!!!..thats incredible!! haha, wanna try that out too..thanks for sharing..:)

only a few hours left b4 team gen’s next hack!! haha!

  7. luther349 says:

well video over any kind of link isnt going to be good. the refresh rate just wouldn’t be fast enough not alone the facet the bandwidth audio streaming needs.you gotta rember this is just a very fancy mix of a second monoter driver and vnc.

  8. w0Ot says:

I was just about to download the old version of this so v0.4 has come out just in time. This is awesome keep it up JJS.

i guess im bout the only person not particully excited about the new cfw release. I know thats its important to keep the scene alive but 5.00 m33 is all i need

    • rocka says:

That because almost everybody want to play the new games without having to buy then!
You must be more like a home-brew enthusiast. =)

Remember folks, i don’t care if you play video-games illegally, but you should buy them (at least the ones you liked/loved) if you don’t do it, the games you love will eventually disappear, and all the we will have left is the crappy games that doesn’t cost a dawn thing to produce!
(and don’t come with the excuse of being poor, cause poor people can’t afford a PSP, no offense)

      • Brendan says:

Idiot. You can buy the new games all you want, custom firmware will still need upgrading. We already can play ISOs, it’s new games that even if you HAVE the UMD, you can’t play. Fucking know your shit before you act like a priest given a religious commendation.

        • rocka says:

Who do you think you are to call me ‘idiot’??
There is not even one UMD that you can’t play!! You may have to Upgrade your Firmware in the process, but you can play every single UMD you buy!!
And the only big Update for this CFW (and CFWE) is the playability of the new(6.20?) games! So yeah, the only ones excited about this news update, are the ones that DON’T BUY GAMES(sorry for the generalization, i know some people buy the games either way)
          Brendan, grow up!

  9. Rocket says:

This is cool, though it would be cooler if I could use the PSP as a second (EXTENDED) screen, not just showing the same image as my monitor.

    • art says:

      you CAN do that.

      • Rocket says:

How? I am running Vista x64.

        • art says:

          2. Right Click on your desktop and select Personalize
          3. Open the Display settings window (at the bottom)

Next arrange the two monitors to the setup you have. Monitor 1 would be your laptop’s display and Monitor 2 is your additional display. So, for example, if your laptop is on the left and the monitor is on the right, drag the two boxes around so that Monitor 1 is on the left and Monitor 2 is on the right.

          Extending The Display:

          1. Select Monitor 2 in the visual or from the drop-down menu
          2. Check the box besides “Extend the desktop onto this monitor”
          3. Just hit Apply.

Now Projecting that onto the PSP
Right click on the taskbar icon and select Display Device. I went up to Change REsolution (Landscape) and set it to 1024×768
          2. Then go back to that menu and select Enable Display.
          3. After that, go to the bottom of that menu and select PSP Display Driver (1024×768)
          4. you should be set up with a 2 screen solution. You can change the resolution but anything under 640×480 is not viewable.

    • yeah!!..thats cooler haha, like having a pc with 2video cards haha

        • asdfasdf says:

You mean yourself? PSP is recognized as a stand-alone display, so if you manage to boot a pc without a graphic card inserted you still will be able to use the psp as a display. Since it’s impossible to output video without a graphic accelerator on a modern pc, so, YEAH, this driver is like having a second graphic card, somewhat.

  10. Free_psp_gamess says:

it says mode change to IWX? any help…I cant sign in to psp live chat why…

  11. Tsakos says:

Great homebrew app, but im strictly using GNU/Linux on my systems, so im not going to try it, but thanks to the developer for contributing a really great homebrew like this one.

  12. COoCOo! says:

Yes! This program is really amazing. I do primarily use it in wireless mode and it looks like this was more an update for usb functions but oh well. I am still going to try it out, it kicks so much ass! I think its my #1 fav program =) Very stable.

  13. matey says:

how do you make pspdisp act as monitor 2? im using vista

    • monkeys jumping on the bed says:

thats what i would like to know.. i use to run this program back in the day, and the other old vesion of this app just picked up the 2nd screen automaticly but that was on xp.. im on win 7 know with ati card i cant see an option anyware where it alows u to turn it on.. if u find out let me know, or any one in this matter.. thanks.

      • art says:

That is for vista. For XP just instead right click and select preferences. Click the Settings tab on the right…

        • monkeys jumping on the bed says:

thanks for the heads up but unfortunately i only see 1 screen monitor displayed it doesn’t detect 2..is there an extra driver i need to install to have windows 7 recognize it?

        • matey says:

          @art

tnx, it almost worked. but whenever i hit “ok” or “apply”, it reverts back to monitor 1 on the left, monitor 2 is disabled on the right.

is there a way to prevent it from going back to default setup whenever i hit ok?

          • art says:

Deselect Autoselect Display with Mouse Cursor under display device. That way your psp remains as a second screen and wont change to your first screen whenever you scroll your mouse back.

  14. drkdude says:

looks like everyone expecting GEN D3 tomorrow..

let’s hope no delay or somebody will get mad again

  15. luther349 says:

what does this brew have to do with games. some people. they where asking abought video playback witch unfortunately cant be done well over vnc.

  16. peter parker says:

anyone no where i can find some weed ?

  17. Gamble_STARS says:

Funny how everyone here is excited for d3 when sony is updated in a few weeks before FTB3 comes out so the PSN cant be used, thats why i have 2 psp’s, one with CFW and another with OFW. I hate pirators, good thing you all dont live in the UK, cause there laws are VERY strict, they catch people too easy.

  18. wymers24 says:

is there a way to add security?

  19. foxdog says:

this app is badass but it needs a combo key for changing view point size, holding select and useing the triggers would be a good combo key :)

  20. Piper says:

    Thanks! so nice

  21. Bob says:

I cant get this to work, i ran the installation, but when i open up the app on my psp and use USB it doesnt install the drivers. Im using Vista 64 btw

  22. shadow1w2 says:

    Oh cool an update. :3
Was just playing with the old version recently.

Was dissapointed that it couldn’t be used as a secondary screen and is just a remote mirror and controller.
I guess SideShow is more for little widget things but it would be nice to physicly place items on a seperate screen rather than take up actual screen realestate just to display say a buddy list.
Or have to deal with Sideshow for it.
Though one could hook up a second monitor and have it displayed on the PSP but thats more trouble than its worth.

I guess using the PSP as a separate screen is in the to do list anyway or hard to do but it would be nice.

So far its already a kick ass app and alot more effective than the simular app on the DS. More CPU power in place of a touch screen seems like an ok trade off though.

I like the improvement over audio streaming in this one.

    • matey says:

      actually you can.

      • shadow1w2 says:

        Ya, I found it.
Seems I missed it nestled in the middle of the readme file.

Though its a tad more complex than I thought it would be but very much doable.

I take back what I said, this app is more kick ass than I had previously thought.
Was gonna keep it on my Mem Stick indefinitly anyway though.

  23. kingrun says:

Lol’d at the windows 7 evaluation watermark on the screen if he needs help with that I could provide info besides I have the same build 7100 (Im guessing its windows ultimate because thats the same one I had)

  24. Rocket says:

Is there a virtual display driver for Vista/7? For people NOT using XPDM drivers…

  25. toolx says:

is there a way to make the cursor move faster? Also found this pretty cool I loaded up MW2 today with the psp connect (cant see anything sucks) but I can sit back and use the psp as a controller. But how and the hell do you make the cursor move faster??

    Thanks

  26. 10lh4x says:

like this app can’t we connect 2 internet via usb ?

  27. BIOS Hazard says:

I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this for so long!

As a student, I get (legitimate) early access to M$ stuff, like Windows 7 x64 and this worked so well on xp.

But now!!! I can put all my little apps (winamp, temps, etc…) on my psp at LANs and give the finger to all my friends with a G15 and their stupid little keyboard screen.
    /jealous

  28. g60force says:

Holy sj*t… this will finally get me booting my W2003 (pancake) Sever, cuz I can throw that big ugly as monitor away :D *awesome dude*

  29. ArtsOfTerror says:

So does this enable you to play and see the psp games on your pc screen?
