PSPKVM v0.5.4 Released: MIDP/JavaME Apps on your PSP!

greg | October 26, 2009

Over the last week or two you likely saw test builds floating around cyberspace, and now today it’s final: M@x and Sleepper’s PSPKVM v0.5.4. Oh, I should mention Anweifeng and AJ Milne too — they’re new to the PSPKVM team.

PSPKVM is a port of SUN’s phoneME Feature enabling MIDP/JavaME applications on your PlayStation Portable.

Personally I use PSPKVM + Opera Mini instead of the [shitty] PSP NetFront browser. Would you believe ACCESS CO., LTD, the company who authors/maintains NetFront, sicced their lawyers on us for hosting this. That’s some bullshit! Anyway, that’s neither here nor there… Enjoy PSPKVM!

PSPKVM v0.5.4 Changes:

  • AMS changes:
    • The AMS supports folders.
    • Virtual keyboards and Freetype setup are now configured in the GUI, not in the .ini.
  • UI changes:
    • There’s a Danzeff-style virtual keyboard available now.
    • The semichordal board supports Greek and Cyrillic scripts.
    • The X/O keys are now fully switchable system-wide.
    • The Danzeff and semichordal boards support a ’smart display’ feature, in which they move out of the way of the active input area in large text boxes.
    • Built-in font now supports basic Cyrillic characters in Unicode range 0×0400 to 0×045f (should support Russian, Ukrainian, Macedonian, Byelorussian).
    • The FreeType font system now supports all three fonts (proportional, monospace, system) and bold, italic, bold/italic faces for all three, in addition to a utility font for speeding up certain system GUI displays, a ‘fallback font’ useful for large Han (CJK) fonts, and uses the FreeType portable cache manager to speed rendering and allow loading much larger font files than previously.
  • Bug fixes:
    • Resolve bug of media playback via “file://” URL. We-Travel voice playback bug should be fixed.
    • There are fixes to network setup that *should* prevent unrecoverable network dropout issue in previous builds. Generally, reconnecting from the Wifi Manager midlet should now work. Test users please report if this is the case.

Check CHANGELOG.TXT for the rest.

With the limited room in flash that wont be possible, and why bother as it will be dog slow to load all the files (i mean it has tons of small files)

Someone out there somewhere on the net (don’t remember where) posted a link for a plugin he made that at least worked with opera. But honestly… when I’m near a wireless hotspot that’s not enough to make me stop breaking into peoples homes holding them at gunpoint and making them let me use their computer instead of using the PSP, but if PSPKVM made an option in the GUI for a wireless keyboard. Then I’d be stoked.

Anyone know why the fallback.ttf is so big?? nearly 15mb….. doesn’t seem normal

Hi guys, I have a question … are all those FONT files needed to use the appz? And if they are can I replace the one that is 15MB for another smaller using same name? It’s a waste of space for me, the file name is:

fallback.ttf

I used other versions and they were lot smaller, or this isn’t a font type file?

Thanks for your time clarifying me this.

Keep up with this great project.

Netfront is so shitty, it’s inferior to a cell phone browser. Ha!

Re the fallback font, yes, it’s really a font. Specifically, Firefly Sung, a TTF with extensive Han (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) character support… along with a few other character sets…

And no, you don’t really need it. It was included partly just to demonstrate that you can cover that much of Unicode with the system, and that you can put as large a font in the thing as you like (previous versions choked on large font files), and partly because PSPKVM does have a lot of Chinese users… and together with the Deja Vu sets in the other slots, it renders a huge amount of the web correctly… But you don’t even have to install a fallback font if you don’t want.

(There’s more on the font system in the wiki–see http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/pspkvm/wiki/ConfiguringFourteenFont )

install opera and run it and check your memstick to see where it is installed and then find the dir called bookmarks or something. its not as if we want the solution so why we should provide a solution when you could have spent 5 min to see if you can figure it out by yourself and anyways it may not be compatible with your current bookmarks

The opera browser is so much better! But can it save images like the regular browser? And is there a website where I can download java games to play on my psp now? Thanks in advance.

Re saving images from Opera Mini, not so much as I’ve noticed…

But Bolt (another J2ME browser) will…

… with a catch. I’m still working on why, but there’s something broken either in Bolt or our JSR75 (file storage interface) implementation specific to the ‘photos’ path. So probably your easiest way to do this right now is:

1. In your pspkvm.ini, remap some other path to the directory you want to save your images to… for example, the root… so in pspkvm, write …

root_dir = ms0:/picture/

2. … then use Bolt to save pictures there. Pick the ‘root’ directory when it asks you where.

Bolt is available from http://boltbrowser.com/ and is pretty fast, too, tho’ not quite as snappy as Opera Mini… main difference is: Opera Mini uses server side compression, Bolt doesn’t… but there both an awful lot faster than the built-in browser. Another J2ME browser that runs fine on PSPKVM is Teashark… tho’ if I remember correctly, you want to use Nokia emulation modes for both of them (see the device menu in the AMS) to get your menu buttons working right.

… and we’re working on that photos dir bug. Annoying. I haven’t used or looked at the JSR 75 stuff much myself yet.

… note also that since PSPKVM implements MVM (multiple virtual machines) you can run several of the browsers at once, if this helps: use LTRIGGER/RTRIGGER/TRIANGLE backgrounds the working midlet so you can switch to/start another… and then you can swap around between them, pick up addresses and pass them between the browsers using PSPKVM’s clipboard, which you can now get to from all the virtual keyaboards. In Opera Mini 4, it’s a bit counterintuitive… you have to mouse down to ‘Insert symbol’ from the URL entry field to get your virtual keyboard to do this… But there *is* a way to copy/paste addresses in all of them.

Hi, how do i select text and copy them via PSPKVM’s clipboard ? The FAQs stated that by pressing select and moving the cursor you could copy and paste, but i couldnt get it to work.

Re the virtual keyboard in Opera, see the FAQ. Depends whether you’re using 4.2 or 5 beta (their code, is different, not ours)…

http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/pspkvm/wiki/space/FAQ

… re the black screen, what firmware, what release are you using?

I flashed one of my consoles to D2, and PSPKVM seems to start reliably. I’ve yet to see the behaviour you’re getting… Regrets, but if I can’t get it to reproduce, it’s kind of hard to fix.

What H/W are you running? We can look at that too.

Re typing speed, I’m partial to the semichordal virtual board for speed (mind you, I developed it), find it generally good enough for general browsing stuff. Takes a bit to learn. But it’s fast once you do. And I’m told the Danzeff (also available in PSPKVM now) is reasonably easy to learn, also not bad for speed. And there’s various tricks to get whichever virtual board you’ve selectedin the various browser contexts–see the FAQ at:

http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/pspkvm/wiki/FAQ
