PSP Custom Firmware 5.50 GEN-C Released

greg | October 18, 2009

Update: Ok, so 5.50 GEN-C is cursed… GENyUS and Yoshihiro are working to get GEN-D out the door. Don’t turn that dial; stick around.

Update: Way too many problems… Download pulled. 5.50 GEN-C2 coming soon.

My PSP just finished flashing Yoshihiro’s 5.50 GEN-C… Sadly PlayStation Store access remains blocked. Otherwise, it is what it is… Play 5.55+ required games without the tedious prerequisites — decrypting, patching, rebuilding… You know.

PSP Custom Firmware 5.50 GEN-C

Only install 5.50 GEN-C on PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 models. Do not install on a PSP-3000 or any PSP with a TA-88V3 board.

Note: If the XMB freezes after installing this update, boot (holding R-Trigger) into the recovery console and browse to Advanced -> Format flash1 and reset settings.

Another note: Personally, I don’t recommend updating just yet… Refer to the comments to see what I mean. Although, you can be a sport and install it, report bugs you encounter, and Pandora back afterward. Expect a patch or two soon as well as an option to speed up memory stick access.

Is there any disadvantage of using this instead of 5.00 M33-6?

the auto decrypting thing i think.

He meant does this have any disadvantages compared to M33-6 – this particular one (GEN-C) doesn’t seem to work very well, but normally the 5.50 GEN firmwares are superior in every way.

@greg,

This 5.50 Gen-C is good if you want to FORGET your games running on 5.0x CFW and below. This CFW only runs on 5.55 games and above, like my Naruto Shippuden and Gran Turismo. When I play my Tekken DR and Resistance: Retribution and all my older games, my PSP reboots or it can not recognize my back up games anymore. WARNING, dont update to this CFW yet. Good thing I have my m33 Pandora with me.

Comment by DStan
2009-10-19 22:54:57

I’m not having that problem. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is running fine as well as Metal Gear. So are the 5.55 and above games. I have a good ol’ phat PSP.

The only thing that broke for me was game categories and I can live without that (though it was a really nice plugin)

If you do get the xmb hanging problem then go into recovery mode and go to advanced, then go to the bottom where it says format flash1 and reset settings. Then exit recovery and it will work, you’ll just have to reenter all your info like youve just turned it on for the first time.

I installed GEN-C on my psp1002 with TA82 mobo. Pressed circle to shutdown, and when I turned it back on it froze. Dunno what is up with that??? So I went and did what ppl are saying to do, format flash 1 and reset settings, then it worked. My buttons have been swapped around from what I am used to with previous cfw’s, but no biggy. Next I inserted a UMD, Rugby League Challenge(AUS)which needs 5.55 firmware, and it works fine. My iso’s are still working and all plugins still working too.

2009-10-18 22:20:10

ok well i tried God of War (US) and it also boots up fine with M33 drive. Quick Question: Are you trying to run CSO\’s or ISO\’s?? The reason I ask is because some people are saying that GEN-C isnt working with CSOs for some reason and when I ran mine they were both ISO\’s. So try converting them with UMDGen, hope this helps.

Comment by nyr2k2
2009-10-19 08:53:27

Yeah, all CSO. Maybe that’s the problem…

Comment by Ulymar
2009-10-19 21:15:48

@RetroGamerX3
My Naruto Shippuden and Gran Turismo are CSOs and they worked on Gen-C. But all my previous games running on CFW 5.0x and below wont run, whether it is ISO or CSO. Better downgrade to GEN-B or m33-6 and wait for a fix on this GEN-C.

For everyone who is having the freezing XMB just shut down the PSP and hold the right trigger to enter the recovery menu, then from there go into “Advanced” and select the “Format flash1 and reset settings” and it should work perfect! I had to do it, so I’m guessing it’s somewhat standard.

I am having a very different problem though, when I try to connect to the internet, I get a “A connection error has occurred. The key information exchange timed out.” error message. I have a 100% signal strength, and my WPA Key is for sure correct.

Try you’re wireless and see if you have the same issue, and if anyone has any advise on how to fix this that would be great! :)

2009-10-18 21:51:40

Thanks for the feedback! Any ideas on what it might been then? I’m 99% sure that it isn’t my modem or router, because they worked perfect with my PSP on 5.50 GEN-B2, so it must be something wrong with the PSP itself.

Comment by RetroGamerX3
2009-10-18 22:14:16

yea u know what, i just found out that 5.50 GEN-C cannot connect to an access point with WPA encryption.
It can only connect when theres no encryption at all (like mine) or when its a WEP encryption.
I have no idea why that is, but it seems that only GEN-C has this problem.
I got this info from user “mallinersha” on http://pspupdates.qj.net/PSP-Homebrew-CFW-5-50-GEN-C-now-out/pg/49/aid/135319

Great find!!! I really love the effort and time put into this, but a PSP without internet and what appears to be a bunch of bugs just isn’t ready to be released yet. I understand that he is pretty much beta testing on us , I just wish he would have called it a beta release instead of a official GEN-C so we could all charge our Pandora batteries while we are installing it.

2009-10-18 21:31:35

You guys do understand that Yoshihiro made this, and that he needs us to basically beta test it for him, right? If there are issues, and you read the thread and see that your issue has already been mentioned and addressed, there isn’t a reason to keep repeating it.

That being said, if your CSO/ISO won’t load, try one of the other drivers. If M33 won’t work, try the Sony one, and so on. Post your results, and then Yoshihiro can see what issues are coming up and address them in GEN-C2, or whatever he calls it.

I’m just thrilled to see that someone is trying to pick up where others have left off and that there IS a new firmware. The firmware scene has been far too sparse as of late. I’ll install this later tonight, definitely.

Thanks for your hard work on this, Yoshihiro!

Honestly, it’s about time for an newer firmware. While it’s nice to see that there’s an 5.50 GEN-C and such, 6.00 has been there for a long time, and now there’s 6.10, why don’t an newer version if you are making an firmware?

team GEN would simply make a cfw for 6.10 if d firmware was that easy to hack! fact is, its not that simple to crack d latest firmware & its all b’cuz of ’sony’.

Greg. Team GEN is working out the bugs as we speak.
Not to mention that they promised a speed-up memory stick access option.
This is no doubt a beta release.
On pspgen, they say they know about the bugs, and they said they’re working in a speed up ms option.

in the psp gen page(oficial for gen firmwares) says that first you have to format flash 1, second you have to format your ms, third you always use sony np9660 driver for iso, and last it recomends to install the ultimate vsh menu for it

thats says the tutorial so you try it

Well this is the basic summary…..

Problems: Freezes at startup, semibricks psp, CSOs dont work, ppl having problems with M33 drive, WiFi donesnt work with WPA encyption, some games fail to boot, the list goes on..lol

Solution: I guess just stick with 5.50 GEN-B2 or even 5.00 M33-6 for M33 fans

Thanks alot to the Yoshihiro and Team DAX for this release…I hope to see 5.50 GEN-C2 real soon.

Well I got pretty much everything working if you set to sony’s no umd driver it works fine, never used CSO’s so I can’t test that. However when you install this it resets all your CFW configuration settings so you have to put all those back to what they were then see what doesn’t work.

Greg, new news.
Download has been pulled from pspgen.
They said C2 is coming soon, but no date as of yet.
They also promised a patch for 5.03 HEN that would feature the same things.
Might want to pull the download, as they are aware of the bugs.

Why dont they just make it 100% functional and then release it instead of giving us garbage(well kinda)

Dont you agree, they are life-savers, i give you that but, atleast take time to test and kill all the bugs before putting it online
:S

But goodjob anyway Gen..

Yea I’ve got this and I’m testing it now. It appears to be slightly messed up. You can still play all 5.00 games, but anything above will not run. It attempts to run, but it sits on the black screen and eventually shuts down. As far I can tell that’s the only thing that’s wrong. So I don’t think I’ll flash back down. By the way does anyone else notice a small slow down on the memory stick? Maybe I’m imagining things, lol. Hope the fix comes soon, I want my Naruto\Full Metal Fix!

Listen every body im not flaming Team GEN at all they do great work and they do it because they love it, but so did Team M33. Now what we have to admit is that ok team M33 seems to have gone the way of the dinasaurs; hopefully they will pull a Jurasic Park and reapear soon with a new CFW. Now as for Team GEN (again great work), but you guys really have to slow down a bit and look over your CFW for bugs and really check it to make sure you can maybe make improvements before releasing it. Me personaly i run M33 and im good with it because i never use PSN and now thanks to YOSHIHIRO i can play newer games no problem.

TRY THIS IF YOUR GAMES DON’T WORK!

1st, try changin driver mode (m33..sony..normal)
if that doesn’t work try
2nd, if your game is in a cso format uncompress it to an iso!

A game which has been patched before and then converted to a CSO works for me!
A game which did not require patch and has been converted to a cso does not work!
So i’ve tried converting and voila!
Games run fine!

Gen-c has minor glitches!
especially network not being able to connect with WPA.

Yeah, prove it. Just because it says official doesnt mean its true. Its defiantly possible but without proof its just FUD. I personally hope DAX is biding his time, waiting for sony to calm down and make a mistake after the release of the Go. Unfortunately hes probably done making CFW’s and my PSP will soon be in the trash.
