XGEN Updater V2 and XGEN Pandora V2 Released

greg | October 1, 2009

It’s about that time, time you upgrade to the latest and greatest from Team GENyUS. So rather than doing the incremental update thing: M33 -> GEN-A -> GEN-B -> GEN-B2 etc… Jump straight to 5.50 GEN-B2 with Yoshihiro’s XGEN Updater. Of course this only applies to PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 owners with a non TA-88v3 board. And if you’re already sporting GEN – continue on keepin’ on.

XGEN Screenshot

XGEN Updater installs Custom Firmware 5.50 GEN-B2 directly on your already hacked hand held, which needs to be running 3.71 M33 or above. XGEN Pandora will modify your Despertar del Cementerio v8 setup. So whenever you need to call upon Pandora, she’ll be restoring/reflashing 5.50 GEN-B2 instead of 5.00 M33.

You mean a TA-88v3 board right?

Shit. Yeah, I think you’re right. It says TA-88v2 in the Read Me. But that must be a typo.

OFFICIAL REPORT

SONY’S ARCH_NEMISIS, SIMPLY KNOWN AS DARK_ALEX – WHOS REAL NAME CANNOT BE IDENTIFIED FOR LEGAL RESONS – WAS A FORMER EMPLOYEE OF SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT (SCE), SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PROCESSES DIVISION.

HIS OCCUPATION WAS TO ATTEMPT TO BYPASS THE SECURITY SYSTEM OF THE PLAYSTATION PORTABLE AND PROVIDE REPORTS ON HOW THIS MAY BE ACCOMPLISHED BY HACKERS AND SOFTWARE ENTHUSIASTS.

ONCE HE HAD DISSASSEMBLED THE PREVENTION CODE, HIS SERVICES WERE NO LONGER REQUIRED BY SONY WHO REFUSED TO CONTINUE TO HIRE HIM FOR ALLEGED FUTURE CONTRACTS AFTER BEING PROMISED A PROMINANT POSITION WITHIN THE COMPANY IF HE SUCCEEDED IN ‘HACKING’ THEIR CONSOLE.

THE DENIAL OF THIS ALLEGED VERBAL AGREEMENT BY MANAGEMENT, RESULTED IN THE CREATION OF TEAM M33 AND DARK_ALEX. WHILE NO CHARGES OF UNFAIR DISMISSAL HAVE BEEN LAID UPON SCE, DARK_ALEX HAS VOWED TO BRING DOWN THE COMPANY THROUGH THE METHODS HE IRONICALLY WAS HIRED TO PREVENT.

well, dax sure had his “sweet revenge” on sony (back then…) but dax is no longer on the psp scene now, lol… it time let go of him & accept d truth his not coming back to make a “6.10m33″.

Comment by DaKai
2009-10-01 16:45:19

You know what, if Dark Alex REALLY wanted to hit sony where it hurts, now would be the time instead of just disappearing and letting sony have the chance to recollect themselves. Especially since the PSPGo is hardware memory and memory stick based, all that says to me is HACKABLE. Now is the perfect time for him to shit all over sony and really hurt them, but i guess alot of people are right; the days of dark alex are done. And if you’re reading this DA, i think you should drop one more that’ll shake things up and brings something good for everyone who goes on Dash Hacks and any other PSP cfw site, and shit on sony. Where u at, Robin Hood!?
PS at DA: I know what it is to be shitted on by a company you work hard for(FUCK GAMESTOP!!!!), thats why i think you should come back.

Comment by dimy93
2009-10-01 17:14:28

U know if that is true hi has left himself a door (I think he guesed what would really happen)and that’s how the first psps were hacked. But after some time sony probably hired s.o else to rewrite whole dax’s work so it won’t be that easy for him to strike again hacking the go

2009-10-01 22:28:28

Why all the hate for Sony?

I am all about modding and homebrew and playing your own backups but damn if I hated a company that bad I would just simply not buy any of their products including hardware.

Comment by Paradigm
2009-10-01 23:00:28

I don’t hate Sony.
But the fact of the matter is that none of us would even look at our psp without CFW.
Not to mention coming out with four models of the same damn handheld makes me rage a little.
($249.99 for a unhackable sliding PSP with psudo-savestate support, puhlease.)

That sounds a little too folklore to me.
If Sony had hired him,
they would have known who he was.
If they knew who he was, and he actually did that…
He would be up against some serious shit.
i.e. “Cyber Terrorism”
That’s at the top top of the list of shit not to do.

they should also work on new 6.10ofw. anyway thanx to the team gen they are keeping the psp homebrew community alive! thumbs up 2 u GEN!

Just to clarify because on your download page it states ~

“***Install 5.50 GEN-B2 directly on your already hacked hand held,*** or modify your existing Pandora setup to install 5.50 GEN-B2 instead of 5.00 M33″

But here on the main page it doesn’t say that. So my question is simply this -

Do you OR do you NOT have to upgrade to 5.50 GEN-B2 through/with the modified Despertar del Cementerio v8 setup? Basically will it just upgrade right from the XGEN Updater V2 from the XMB?

I ask because the readme file is a bit “translated” and not exactly clear.

Comment by greg
2009-10-01 12:56:58

If you’re currently running 3.71 M33 or higher, you can upgrade directly to 5.50 GEN-B2 with this; that’s NOT going the Pandora route. Anything below 3.71 M33 – use Pandora.

Comment by prime
2009-10-01 13:32:09

Good program. They fixed the vsh menu on the fat psp. Install dc8 on a m33-4. Run this new program. Reboot with your pandora batt. Select GEN5.50. When done make shure you Restore Default Settings in System because you will find some of Gen’s defaults. Retype your own settings.

I’ve renamed the file 550 to 550.pbp and I’m not sure where on the ms to put this. I’ve just left it in F:\ (on the memory card)

I’ve put the eboot file in psp/game/update

And then that’s it. Not sure where to go from here.

Do I need the OFW 5.5?

Yes! I can finally update. All the previous versions that did firmware updates by the official method always froze during the installation around 84% every time I tried(Gen-A, MHU, etc). This one actually works since it’s not installing CFW by the official method. Thank you soo much for creating this. :D

Ok so after reading through all the comments, I’m still confused about what to do. Can someone who has successfully updated to this latest version give a step by step on how to update from a phat PSP cfw 5.00 m33?

I extracted the XGEN updater V2 download and have these 3 files:
Docs folder
PSP folder
550.PBP file

I know the Docs folder just has the readme, but I would like to know what to do with the other 2 files.

Comment by Paradigm
2009-10-01 22:51:49

Put 550.pbp on the root of your memory stick.
Put XGEN in the GAME folder.
Run it.
It’s that simple.
If you want to make a GEN Pandora…
Get the 5.00 update.
Put it on the root of your Memory Stick.
Get DC8.
Put DC8 in your GAME folder.
Run DC8.
Once that’s finished then run XGEN and go to “GEN Pandora.”

Don’t make a GEN pandora.
Keep your DC8 one.
Then if you don’t like it, Pandora back.
I must admit, I was a GEN skeptic.
After using it for a month, I can say I like it better than M33.
Increased CXMB support, updated frequently, not to mention my 5.55 games only run on it.
It’s great.

DAX was a hero no doubt.
But he’s moved on to bigger better things.
He might come back, might not.
We have other great developers besides DAX.
Team GEN and Yoshihiro for example have done what we thought would be impossible.
So I’m sure a new CFE will come out.
By Dark_Alex?
Seems unlikely.

Hi everyone. I have a PSP 2000 3.80 m33-5. I had downloaded xgen and put the files in the right places on my MS, but still the app crashes when it starts loading “all modules”. Here’s the sequence I used:

XGEN INSTALLER -> Flash Install CFW 5.50 GEN-B2.

1. It extracts PRX…
2. Loads Sony updater
3. PSP 2000 Detected
4. “Now load all modules from UPDATER”

And then it crashes and my PSP turns off… any ideas??

Thanks…

All games SUPPORT it. Meaning any game you have will play on it.

The new games REQUIRE 5.55-6.00. Games like Gran Turismo, Motor Storm, Disgaea, Dirt 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Naturo, etc…

At some point, you’re going to have to upgrade! The newest GEN FW is solid so no worries.

I think you installed the official firmware. You will likely need a Pandora battery to get out of that. Unfortunately, if you don’t have one already, you will probably need make one on another PSP.

You put the official firmware, now you need the pandora battery to reverse to cfw

No, you don’t need a pandora battery.

Put the eboot.pbp file in a folder on your memory stick under PSP\GAME\UPDATE.

Put the 550.pbp file in the root of your memory stick.

This is already set up for you.

Just extract it to a memory stick just as it is in the “xgen-v2_1254337544.zip”.

And run it from the GAME option on you PSP’s XMB.

I donwloaded GT, it didn’t work. Changed the driver to m33, still didn’t work. I read the readme that came with it and it said I need FW 5.55??? I’ve got 5.50 installed. Anyone help?

Comment by nyr2k2
2009-10-02 14:17:18

GT needs to be patched with the recently released decryption tool. Look a couple posts down from this on the psp-hacks front page for information on that.

Alternatively, find a different version of GT that’s already patched. Most places should have a “fixed” or “patched” version that you can grab, which will work no problem.

u still b able to play old games on it, though gen cfw is a bit buggy i say. u get some crashes sometimes, unlike dark_alex’s (old)m33 cfw is perfect(almost). but its also worth upgrading to team gens cfw specially ryt now that new game require u d new firmware n order to play.

how to downgrade ur psp? here u go then:

I am struggling at the min. I have put the 550.pbp into X:/.I then renamed the boot file to 550.pbp and placed this in X:/psp/game/update, but when I load my psp it comes up with corrupt file. Can anyone help?

Comment by ryan
2009-10-02 11:46:21

check if the file is “550.pbp’ then you just have to copy it without renaming it to your ms root(x:/).. and the “update” folder placed this in X:/psp/game/

Don’t rename the eboot. Don’t rename anything… the archive provided here has the correct “550.pbp” already in it, so just put that in your root and leave everything the way it is.

Comment by Bob
2009-10-02 11:57:38

Have tried that aswell, I have just noticed once I have tried my psp and plugged it back into my computer the boot.pbp file disapears from X:/psp/game/update.Now when I disconnect my psp it is in the folder. Any ideas why this is happening?

Comment by Dean Gullberry
2009-10-02 12:04:11

It must be something simple. On your memory stick you should have (if “X” is your psp):

X:\550.pbp
and
X:\PSP\GAME\UPDATE\EBOOT.PBP

Make sure it’s exactly like that and you didn’t copy any extra layers of subfolders or something.

Comment by Bob

I give up dude, I don’t know what’s going on. I’m not even clear on what is happening to you exactly. Why don’t you just update the original way… GEN-A rev 4, then GEN-B, then GEN-B2. All those files are right here.

Comment by Dean Gullberry

You originally said you had renamed the EBOOT.PBP file, which you should not have done. You have renamed it back to EBOOT.PBP, right?

ok so I have 3.71 M33-2 on my psp. I put the update in the games folder, and i put the 5.50.pbp on the main page of the stick (root of the stick I assume) But when I load the updater, it just freezes and turns off my psp. I am clearly missing a step. And ive read through the comments, but i havent really touched my psp since it got it updated over a year ago as far as CFW updates go. So I am a bit lost, and help would be great.

For anyone with problems running the updater, PLUG IN YOUR AC ADAPTER. I don’t know if this is causing any issues, but you should always be plugged into AC when doing a firmware upgrade… whether it is through Pandora or not.

And for everyone else afraid of GEN, I’ll say this:

- YES, all your games will work
- NO, you won’t miss out on anything, EXCEPT the MS speedup hack, and that is ALL
- IF you have homebrew that doesn’t work, UPDATE it. Only very old homebrew doesn’t work on GEN, and every worthwhile homebrew has a compatible 3.xx+ version

No dude, I give up. Try updating the old fashioned way, other than that I’m out of ideas. I’ve never had any issues like this so I don’t know what’s wrong.

I was already running 5.50 GENB2, so the only thing I used this for was to update my Pandora stick.

Including the option in this to install the official firmware was a really bad idea. Really Bad Idea!

After I got the unit installed to the custom firmware I tried the option to install the official 550 firmware not knowing it would make my psp unable to play downloaded games. Shoulda atleast put a warning that using that option would ruin the psp.

Well now I have to go buy a magic stick and pandora battery to get it back to custom firmware. Which I can’t really afford to do at the moment, so my psp is now only good for light internet surfing since I have just one umd game.

Everyone learns the hard way Chris. If you’re putting CFW on your PSP you ought to know the different between custom and official and how that affects your system!

You can make your own pandora and magic memory stick, BTW.

2009-10-02 14:32:01

I’ve read that to make your own pandora and stick you need a different psp. Well I know no one in real life that even owns another psp. So I’m stuck now till I can get the funds to order one.

I’d think that, going by the other large number of folks just on here that are noobs to using these types of installers, that anyone smart enough to make these installers would be nice enough to warn people not to use the ofw option unless they want to screw up their system.

Before using this updater the last time I tried installing cfw was at least two years ago, maybe longer, just not something most folks do enough of to know everything, that’s why apps like this were intended I’d think. By removing that one option things like this wouldn’t happen to anyone.

Comment by DSpider
2009-10-07 03:14:45

Yes, and by removing knifes people won’t get hurt anymore. Or better yet, removing the subway so people don’t mugged anymore ! That would be friggin sweet.

Do you have any idea what a hypocrite you are ? Custom firmware is BASED on official firmware. Cfw is basically ofw with a little twist (running code and loading backups). You, on the other hand, just want to pirate games.

PS: I’m not telling you how to get back to custom firmware paradise without another modded PSP (only if you have 5.00 ofw and mobo under TA-085v2).

Anyway. You simply don’t deserve it. It’s your own damn fault for updating to official firmware. Deal with it.

The PSP has been around since Q4 of 2004. You had pleny of time to get one with an earlier motherboard. Just be grateful you can run kernel 5.xx code and about 99% of backups (which is over 500 games), except some of the new 5.55+ ofw games (which can also be decrypted). So STFU.

If it fail, (shutdown while updating with black screen) use Hellscat Recovery v1.50 to downgrade straight to 5.00-4m33 then upgrade to 5.50GenB with XGEN updater just like i did….good luck.

550.PBP should be at the root of ur M card, which means at the page where u see ur iso, picture, psp folder.

Yeah, that’s normal, they just forgot to update the text:

“(n otez que nous n’avons pas signalé le B2 mais laissé le B par oubli)”
(Take No we do not report the B2 B but left out of forgetfulness)

How do you install it on the psp? I have a psp 2000 with 5.00m33-4 CFW. How do you know if you have a TA-88v3 board?

Well, I finally upgraded to GEN to play the new games. But, the program says it can go straight to GEN B-2. When I used this, It only got me to GEN B(full)…

Any help?

when I try to run it from the psp menu I get to the screen that says Yoshihiro PSP XGEN Updater for PSPGEN CFW etc, I hit Enter, and the PSP shuts itself off.
Running 3.90 m33-3

Just in case anyone has the same problem as Scholz up there, I had it too and formatting the memory stick seems to have solved it.

i’ll need some help here….since it’s been so long from the last time i did any psp mods.

successfully installed 5.50 GEN-B(full) with these files on my PSP fat. i see there is a XGEN Pendora option here.
so i download a DC8 resurrect.prx file n create folder ms0:TM/DC8/kd/ and place resurrect there to create the magic mem stick… is that right?

i do hav a pandora battery from those 5.00 m33-4 days.

and i have a PSP 2006 currently on OFW 5.01 , will i be able to get this set to a 5.50 GEN-B if i create magic mem stick as i mentioned above, combined with my existing pandora battery?

can’t seem to be able to…someone please help.

Greetings peeps, two quick questions:

(1) I run a 5.50Gen-A slim, successfully upgraded from 3.71M33 > 5.00M33 > 5.5GenA.
My question is: will this updater work on my PSP?

(2) Can someone tell me the correct procedure to go from 5.5GenA to 5.5GenB and then 5.5GenB2 using the individual zip files? From what I ‘ve come to understand I must extract the 5.5GenB files in the PSP/GAME/UPDATE directory, but when I do it, in the XMB I get a “corrupted data” thing, no matter from where I ‘ve downloaded the damn thing. Should I keep the files from the 5.50GenA update and then overwrite what’s there with the files from 5.50GenB update? Should I do something else?

Any answer to (1) or (2) would be really useful since, after the initial shock of upgrading my PSP CFW, I would like to go all the way, if possible.

Thanks to everyone in advance.

@ Moonchildus

I used this link to update from 3.71 M33-6 to 5.00 M33-6. I’m going to try it for the XGEN update.

Try this link, it might help:

Hi, I’ve stopped playing my psp for a long time and I’d like to update my psp to this FW.
How would I go about doing this update if my psp is psp1001 and still have official fw 2.82?
any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

anyone wanting to upgrade their hacked firmware via XGEN but struggling please read this.

there are several steps i used to ensure this works (i started on 4.01 M33-2 on a white fat), and firstly it started with:

1. a fresh MS. format a 512MB+ MS in your PSP. it’ll leave most of the folders required and will eradicate any doubt of corrupt data/structure.

2. to cover all the bases (i’m not saying which of these is correct, as i don’t know) i placed the 550.PBP and EBOOT.PBO files in a couple of different places where X is your memory stick root directory (if a folder isn’t there, create it):

X:\PSP\GAME\RECOVERY (both files)
X:\PSP\GAME\UPDATE (550.PBP)
X:\ (550.PBP)

3. you should then be able to run the updater through your PSP menu through Game-Memory Stick, or, as i did, going into recover mode by (PSP off) holding R whilst booting the PSP mode and selecting to run the program from the recovery folder.

Worked great for me after several tries of other methods here. I know it’s not the exact method as there are file duplications here that are not needed (i don’t know where the program is looking for the 550.PBP file), but its a method that works and might save some from scratching their heads for an age.

Let me know if this helps you!

This step will also be required (taken from test76 above – cheers!)

Press R button during PSP restart to get into recovery console
go to configuration / UMD Mode and change to M33 no umd
this is for all who get 80020321 error
