Sony Details Their PSPgo UMD “Solution” *Updated*

greg | September 24, 2009

Update: Oh man, maybe it is worse than I thought… Check this out, by way of MCV:

Sony is not currently planning to bring its newly announced PSPgo Rewards scheme to North America. The service was announced yesterday for European territories… An SCEA representative has revealed the company will support both the new handheld and the standard PSP.

“We have a dual platform strategy,” a Sony representative told IGN. “PSPgo is the latest offering in our portable entertainment products targeted for the digitally savvy and early adopters who are looking for an easy way to experience entertainment and a wide variety of digital content.

“We will continue to be committed to our existing PSP users by offering over 16,000 pieces of digital content including games, minis, movies, television shows and SensMe, the new music application as well as UMDs.”

What a bummer. I was looking forward to 3 free games.

My bad… I misunderstood the original cited source.

Let me try this again… Anyone who owns an UMD-supported PSP is entitled to participate in the “PSPgo Rewards” program. First you register your new PSPgo on the PlayStation Network; the program ends March 31st 2010. Once you do that, insert any UMD in the old PSP and log in to PSN. You will then be emailed a promo code redeemable for 3 games of your choice – any 3 from the 17 that is.

That’s all right. It’s certainly better than what I originally thought.

Eurogamer has the complete game list too:

  1. Buzz!: Brain Bender
  2. Buzz!: Master Quiz
  3. Daxter
  4. Echochrome
  5. Everybody’s Golf PSP
  6. Killzone: Liberation
  7. Lemmings PSP
  8. LocoRoco
  9. MediEvil
  10. Patapon
  11. Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice
  12. Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
  13. Resistance: Retribution
  14. SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3
  15. Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror
  16. Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow
  17. WipEout Pure

- new source: eurogamer

PSPgo UMD Solution A solution? Hardly. I hope you haven’t purchased any more than 3 UMDs in the past however many years. Sony’s plan: to offer three (3) full game downloads to those who have purchased the new UMD-less PSPgo.

So here’s the apparent scenario… You go to the store, buy the [overpriced] PSPgo, bring home your new hand-held with no games whatsoever. Grab your old PSP, put in a UMD of the game you wish to download, register for “PSPgo rewards” via the PlayStation Store, and shortly thereafter you’ll receive a redeemable promo code. Log into the store again, this time from your PSPgo, enter said promo code, and download the full game.

According to the source, Sony is only offering 17 titles come launch time. Some of which include: Killzone: Liberation, Everybody’s Golf, LocoRoco, Patapon, and Echochrome. I sure hope GTA and WipEout is in that list.

Hell, maybe someone will hack the whole reward system by “spoofing” the inserted UMD. I wouldn’t mind replacing some legitimately purchased shit games with new ones.

What are your thoughts?

Totally stupid, how many people are going to “upgrade” from a regular psp to the psp go and use this system?

How professional… How many people will even bother to go through all that trouble? I mean, the people who actually know what they are doing will, but not the 10 and 12 year olds or the less-computer-literate people. The whole thing is like an extremely lame “Oh we are sorry for your inconvenience, take this shitty deal we came up with and shut up.” That game ID DESERVES to be spoofed.

Beyond popular net-belief, sony doesnt have to do anything. Its a system based on downloadable games, if you want to play UMD’s then buy a psp. If you want a 16gb online downloadable system, get a pspgo. Otherwise STFU and continue to pirate all your games like we know you do.

Stop acting like a spoiled child who just got his favorite toy taken away.

This isn’t how I read the story elsewhere. The story I heard was that if you buy a go register it, then plug in a previous version PSP you get 3 free games as an upgrade reward from the list of 17.
This is seperate to any UMD upgrade program.

So this is Sony handing out 3 free games for anyone “upgrading” to a go, in adition to the time limited free Gran Turismo offer. All in all a pretty good deal.

I think you’ve got the idea a bit wrong greg. You can have any three of the seventeen games regardless of whether you’ve purchased the original UMD of it or not. The only stipulation is that you have any UMD of some sort in the PSP’s drive and you register the old PSP before March 31 2010.

Oh yeah just to add to that. I have to wonder if I’d get 6 free games if I registered both of my PSPs.

So what is stoping you from renting the game from blockbuster/gamefly, and useing it to activate this…

Own the game for the price of renting it?

Or am I missing the point….

Blockbuster’s near me do not offer PSP games anymore.

This comment though is a win. Now you can own the game for renting it lol!

Well that’s a lame list. Even if it is three free games, the free games are pretty crappy. The good games on the list, I bet most people have already finished on their older PSPs and have stopped playing them altogether. Where’re the newer games? Where’s my Persona, my MHFU that I’m still playing? Why not include Patapon 2 or any of the games that’s already up for DL on the PSN!?

2009-09-24 16:30:27

this is a step in the right direction, but it’s only a baby step. if they had given you a choice of 3 PSN+3 of those, i might be tempted, but those games are pretty shitty.

Sony needs to face that the scene is what is kept up the sales of the PSP, not the mostly mediocre games that are released for it.

Cause the game is too much fun so the customer will be getting too much than what sony is wanting to give out.

Sony wants to try to rip you off by having crap games, but they make it sound like “WOO HOO 17 games to pick from What a great deal!!!!”

Imagine going in to the Games stores here in the UK, and stand in there, downloading your games from PS network, the guy walks over to you, and says, can i help you sir?, oh its ok, i just got what i wanted, what was that sir?, i just downloaded my game using your wireless connection and walk back out the store, now that would go down very well, in stores, especially if they don’t sell PSP Go’s in that store. :o) LOL

Comment by cboushell
2009-09-24 19:50:03

If thats what you really wanted to do you could do it from outside the store. The signal doesnt stop at the front door, but you would need the WEPkey in the first place, unless it was left unencrypted.

Walk outside of your house and hit scan in the network settings of your PSP, when I do this it looks as if everyone of my nieghbors does, now if you live in a more rural area you wont get the same results but I live in typical suburbia

who of the PSP owners will pay 250 $ / € for bluetooth ? i guess less then 1 %

well this is a start by Sony, but honestly, the games on those list arent good except for RR. i wouldn’t waste any sleep over it.

about the wireless internet thing, well in urban areas, wireless is on a rapid rise. i work at STAPLES, and i can tell u, every week we sell at least 3-4 routers. in rural areas, its not so popular, but in urban environments, almost every single street has them lol. my high school has campus wide coverage all unprotected.

What a great steaming pile of horse shit, does sony give a shit about any of their consumers? So they overprice the PSP Go, make the shittiest UMD conversion program i’ve ever layed eyes on AND charge an extra £5 on any downloadable game than what you’d pay in the stores?

Awesome sony, awesome.

What a great idea Sony! By spending no money out of your pocket, you provide so little value to the customers.

Maybe you can get gamespot to buy the games. $15 for the whole lot unopened if you are lucky.

We have hotdogs and sausage rolls provided for all and kerosene is available free of charge. For $5 we’ll convert your psp into a molotov cocktail bomb incase the riot police squads decide to show up.

THE REVOLUTION STARTS WITH YOU!

By the way, I have to make a 1 hour train ride and a 15 minute bus ride to get there, but its worth it!

Also, this deal is only available in Europe, or so I’ve heard. No deal for the American or Japanese markets, which basically makes this into a steaming pile of shit. Smaller screen, huge price tag (at that rate, might as well get the PS3 Slim), uncomfortable controls, and the fact that we’re paying for a service that’s already available on our normal PSP’s. I’ll pass.

I urge y’all to not buy a PSP go. It is not a justifiable purchase at the present time, because an unhacked psp is like being born without arms and legs. So stay away from the go, at least until it’s hacked, or a full PSP SDK is released publicly (no limits on using the hardware when making programs).

I think their just having issues figuring out a way that they could transfer existing umd’s without ppl abusing it. I see the PSPgo more as a system for ppl that dont already have a psp, like the fact that the new sexy ps3 slim came out dosnt mean im going to go out sell my old ps3 to “upgrade” to the slim. I just think some ppl are getting a little too heated over this topic.
