GameCategories v4 Released: Categorize Your Homebrew

greg | August 28, 2009

Do you have a mess of homebrew loaded on your memory stick? Apps, games, emulators, PSOne EBOOTs, whatever… Make things easier for yourself with Bubbletune’s Game Categories plugin. It’s so slick, check how GameCategories integrates with the XMB –

GameCategories Screenshot (Context Mode) GameCategories Screenshot (Multiple MS Mode)

GameCategories V4 changes:

  • Recoded entire project.
  • Added support for 5.50 GEN.
  • Added new mode, “Context menu”, see below for more information (this replaces pre-game-menu mode).
  • Added new option under System Settings to pick your mode instead of the ctrl combo.
  • Added possibility to translate the plugin to your own language.
  • Order of your categories is now calculated from their modification time instead of randomly.
  • Changed remap code, a lot of character and count limits should now be gone or decreased, including SCE limits.
  • Show All option was removed in order to aid the removal of certain limits.
  • Fixed compatibility with a lot plugins.

I loved the idea of this app but the last version didn’t entirely work for me. But this looks awesome.

Just to check back in, I’ve installed and it works perfectly on my 5.00 M33-6 Phat.
This is an incredible piece of homebrew, this is up there with PSP Filer as one of the must haves for PSP. Amazing why Sony never implemented some shape or form of this.

well they (sony) haven’t made this themselves because they don’t assume ppl have tons of homebrew apps on one psp.

I mean, how many lame demos can one with original firmware have on a non-cfw-ed psp?
plus the one umd at a time game… not too much.

this is only super useful for us cfw users :)

yes indeed, the best app ever made for the psp, the most useful one ^^

does this work on a psp 3000 running on custom firmware enabler v3.60? and is it compatible on a running ctf theme?

This works fine with a CTF theme, but like I said above I’m using an older version PSP and CFW.

Love this plugin, definately one of if not the best.
Also love the way it looks like it’s an official feature from Sony the way it’s integrated into the XMB and the options under System Settings…very professional…great stuff.

I really like this plugin. it works so seamlessly with the XMB. Except, i think thet could expand on this idea for the music folder too, as i have 5.00 m-33 6 and don’t have subfolders for usic. once again, a must have!!

I’ve installed in PSP3000 with Gen-A but there is no option under System Setting. But there is an option in VSH menu.
Anybody?

Its not weird that Sony never integrated this in their official firmware. Its even pretty logical because normally you cant play .iso files from your memory stick, and normally you cant play homebrew applications, so why would Sony create a feature wich sorts your games fron your programs when you normally cant play them? This is a great plugin, wich is a must-have for everywone in the scene. A great piece of development!

i wish that u could “hide” the uncategorized. that is necessary, as i am using ultimate psptube 2.0 high memory mod. this isnt stand alone, instead, it boots the eboot.pbp in ms0:/psp/game/psptube/eboot.pbp so uncategorized only has the reg version uf ultimate psptube 2.0

You can “hide” the “Uncategorized” folder from the VSH. My Game folder only has “CAT_” folders in it, so “Uncategorized” doesn’t show up. I also have a “CAT_” folder for my ISOs.

It’s stated that support for GEN 5.50
NOT FOR GEN-A 5.03 :(
Consider switching to CFE 3.60
Bye GEN 5.03

I hope they can implement to the PHOTO section, because it will be VERY useful if we want to add our personal photos in other category so that it won’t affect the launching of ChickHEN in the photo section.

Cus as we know, we cannot add other photos in the Photo section for ChickHEN to work.

how do u rename the uncategorized memory stick?

Comment by Stacy
2009-09-03 20:58:32

You can “rename” the “Uncategorized” folder from the VSH. My Game folder only has “CAT_” folders in it, so “Uncategorized” doesn’t show up. Make sure that all of your folders under GAME are only “CAT_” folders.

I’m having issues using this plugin.
Im currently running 5.00 m33-6.
I have 2 CAT_ folders, one in ISO and one in GAME.
In the CAT_ISO folder I have my iso’s; same goes for my ISO_Homebrews, homebrews

I have them set up as “Context Menu” and whenever I select either of the categories the only thing that shows up is one “corrupted data” file. help :C

thanks in advanced

the CAT_ISO folder has just ISO files

I just found out something…

When I put Rock Band Unplugged under ISO\CAT_Iso and my downloaded music tracks on Game\Cat_Iso, the game wouldn’t recognize the downloaded stuff. When I tried to put both of them outside the ‘CAT_’ folders to make the game detect the downloaded songs again, and they now both show up under ‘Uncategorized’, it didn’t work anymore. I guess I have to re-download the song add-ons…
