PSPgo: New Firmware and Features

greg | August 13, 2009

The fortunate folk at Eurogamer got their hands on a PSPgo pre-release model… So here’s the inside scoop straight from the source –

The pre-release sample of the new hardware arrived with an unreleased firmware revision: 5.70. This may or may not be the system software that ships with the retail unit coming on 1st October. 5.70 does feature a number of changes over the current 5.51 operating system.

Not surprisingly, it’s the Settings area of the XMB that gets the lion’s share of the changes:

  • Network Update is now listed as System Update, but, curiously, has the same options.
  • Video Settings obviously doesn’t have the first four UMD-related toggles.
  • System Settings now has a “Your Birth Date” option (second from top), and a “Display Panel Close Option” toggle, which allows you to set it to either “Standard” (goes to a clock graphic) or “Enter Sleep Mode”. Also “Battery Information” seems to be gone, as do UMD-related options, but there’s a “Format System Storage” option in addition to the usual Memory Stick format option.
  • Power Save Settings loses the “Backlight Auto-Adjust” option for some reason.
  • There’s a new “Bluetooth Device Settings” entry, which consists of a toggle for switching Bluetooth on and off and a “Manage Bluetooth Devices” entry.

Hooking up the PSPgo to a Mac via USB, we find that the total available storage available to the user is 14.74GB, formatted in the FAT32 configuration (hence introducing a 4GB file-size limit).

Sony has opted out of using a conventional USB cable format on the new handheld. The PSPgo itself uses a wider, thinner connector for the console, terminating in the standard USB connector. So, similar to the iPhone and iPod Touch, it’s proprietary cable time. It also appears as though Sony has moved away from the old AV port that debuted on the PSP-2000 – there’s a common-or-garden 3.5mm stereo jack connection for headphones only, not the more traditional extended interface with its support for external remotes and the like.

That’s the gist of things. For the full article, follow the source. It’s a good read.

Lol, it’s not gonna run on anything lower that the released firmware, sony learned that lesson long ago, with the advent of the slim

he’s got a point…
its not gonna run anything lower than 5.70-only higher because psp1k-3k only have a few megabytes of flash memory, so those firmwares arent gonna know where to install custom firmware, download games, play movies, listen to music ect.

This looks exciting, it makes me wanna buy one, but the let down of features such as new usb connecter, no dual analog sticks and more is what has put me off getting it.

If you think about it you can see that Sony is getting worried, they are attempting to make more money by having stuff such as the USB connecter a sony custom one so that 3rd parties cannot make them resulting in Sony losing money.

I know as much as everyone else when it comes to the psp go! but dont this look a bit sus?

4gb file limit, and custom cable is a deal killer for me.

Yup. Especially the proprietary cables and lack of support for older accessories would have killed any interest I had in this model, if I’d had any to begin with. gg Sony.

I really don’t get the need for proprietary cables at all, everything I own has one, but my Sansa Clip and the Black Berry, and that’s why I own them.

No 2nd analog nub, no camera, same shitty internet, hardly anything changed except the design. Just another failed attempt for Sony. I dont think I’m buying this one.

I’ll stick with my PSP 2000 w/ 5.00 M33-6

i wish i were you. hate the 3000 with the stupid pre-ipl. why dont they just add homebrew support BUT also add a scanner for .iso and .cso files, and if the psp finds it just atommatically delete it. i bet sony would get 5 times more profit

is it a hint that psp 3000 makes the first move to eliminate hacks juz imagine in the philippines if you buy psp 3000 theres a warning that if you update,or bricked warranty will be void so its a piece of junk or a you can keep it as a sony toy figure for display so whats next new psp G0 -go for future display!

charging more for a system that does less,
having to buy new proprietary usb cable,
throw your 16gb mspro in the trash and buy more expensive memory stick,
get rid of the stack of screen protectors that are too big and buy newer smaller ones at a higher price,
protective case for psp can go as well,
no longer can you sell or trade your games when you are tired of playing them,
most games you have on umd will need to be purchased again,
and that is just a few of the long list of dumb shit.

but you can link your ps3 controller.
yeah! that makes it all worth it.

W.T.F.

take the money you have for psp go and “GO” buy a ps3, it will cost about the same in the end, or you can get an xbox 360 or wii with games.
sony’s over paid employee’s need a swift kick in the ass.

while I’m bitching about sony’s bad marketing;
why are we paying for blu-ray media when most games will fit on a dvd? ever get the feeling you were being robbed? can’t see someone holding a gun to your head being much different.

not like psp has that great of games anyway.
and no one wants to hear about game piracy being the reason for lack of good games.
piracy didn’t hurt xbox, xbox 360 “that was rrod”, wii, psx, ps2, ds, gba, pc, or any other gaming system.

don’t get me wrong I like my ps3 and the psp 1000/2000, but come on, what we have to pay to enjoy them is outlandish.

Bit stupid in my opinion, any PSP can acess the PSN store and download games, so why didn’t they just make more of an effort to encourage downloadable content on the 3000 and focus their attention on making a 2nd generation PSP with dual analog nubs and such? I definately won’t be buying one.

Well i think the PSP Go is gonna suck because it cant take UMDS and Sony is NOT Converting every single UMD to Digital games to put onto the PSN Store. A minority of all the UMDS will be converted but major titles wont be. IDK for sure but i dont think its worth a buy. ( Cept the internal 16 GBs :p )

keep your psp 1000/ 2000 i bet it wud rise the 2nd hand price up to $500 or more than……..in 2010… professionaly marketing tactics can be base on product development as a expert product endorser!! a new product must be more satisfying> than the previous model not only the image and packaging but the feautures that boost the interest and curiousity of the
customer who are dedicated their choices on brand loyalty like the SONY…..good luck to your new product line…YOU CAN DO BUSINESS WITH THE DEALERS BUT IT DEPENDS ON THEIR CUSTOMERS GOODLUCK…….
