Yabause 0.9.10 Released: SEGA Saturn Emulator

greg | August 11, 2009

You don’t know, you haven’t heard? It’s Yabause version 0.9.10 — the SEGA Saturn emulator for your PlayStation Portable. Now before you get all excited you should know a few things:

  1. (Quoted from the readme) PSP support for Yabause is experimental; please be aware that some things may not work well (or at all), and in particular there’s no configuration interface yet.
  2. You must obtain the SEGA Saturn BIOS yourself; a simple Google Search will turn that up.
  3. You need a PSP-2000 (Slim) or later; Yabause needs the extra ram.

I tried it; it’s semi-functional in terms of loading CD images and playability. Things get choppy, but nonetheless, Yabause clearly demonstrates the possibility of SEGA Saturn emulation. Check the compatibility list here.

Greg, You forgot to add that this REQUIRES a PSP Slim. It can’t run without the extra Ram.

Also, I tried this myself, but I couldn’t get past the initial startup screen… I think. I got past the Saturn logo screen, then just got a random mess of shapes and graphics. Same screen, two different games. I thought the Bios I found was screwed up. I hadn’t seen that Compatibility List before though…

I tried Mortal Kombat 2 and Pandemonium, both of which on the List say “Show stuff” well. I guess now I know. Anyone recommend any small sized games (preferably under 200mb) that sound like they work according to that compatibility list?

And then there are those of us who have never had the chance to own a Saturn, and would love to experience all of the rarities for the system. At least we know that it can be done.

It just needs some serious fixing up, but experimental or not, this is a project worth someone’s time to invest in.

oh man! you are my man! i LOVE my saturn! The import games on that thing were amazing! Even back then, I was saying that if fuckin Sega would take a chance and actually bring half the cool games that come to japan out to the US, the Saturn might have had a better fight!
Its all about Panzer Dragoon Saga, Guardian Heroes, and Xmen Vs. Street Fighter! (and so many others! SEGATA SANSHIROOOOOOOOO!!!!!)

Can someone please help thank you. This sounds really awesome, I cannot wait to play nights: into dreams! YEAH BABY KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!!!

Hey there,
I presume you mean ‘ROMs’?

Sorry to say this, but I don’t really think you can ask that kinda stuff here.. being illegal to download games and whatnot without owning the actual game in the first place (I’ve been abused enough in the past for asking a question along the lines of “where can I download Roms from?”, etc etc..)

So i’ll drop you (and any others out there a small hint).

All disk based games are known as ‘.ISO’ & also (I’m sure you’ve heard this plenty of times).. Google is your best friend ;)

anyone have any luck running games?
i have 3 bioses (yes they are all valid), and it will do the first boot screen (either jap or usa) then the blue sega logo comes up but that’s as far as i am able to get it. i would play dragon force at 10% speed if that’s the onl way to get it portable. it seems like it wants to load but hangs on the second sega screen 4eva!!!!

As the guy who’s working on this, let me just say — be patient. (: As the README says, it’s still in an experimental stage; this is more of a “let’s see if it’ll even run” release than a “try it out” release. I’m working on an improved PSP core in my free time, and while I don’t know how good it’ll get (or how long it’ll take — gotta put bread on the table, after all), I definitely intend to improve on the current state of things.

As a side note, it may actually run fine on PSP-1000s, but my experimental code currently assumes 56MB of available RAM, so it’s likely to crash if you run it on a -1000. I’ll try and fix that up along the way as well.
