The PSP Go, Hands On…

greg | June 2, 2009

All right, at first I agreed with most of y’all, I wasn’t digging the new design… That’s until I had the opportunity to manhandle one of these bad bitches at E3 earlier, and I must say, despite the smaller screen and whatnot, Sony’s new PSP Go feels wonderful, like a bag of sand… And I should mention, it no doubt packs more portability than the previous models. So again, I gotta give it to Sony.

PSP Go Hands On PSP Go Hands On

For those interested in following Dashhacks @ E3; See here. We’ll try and keep that up-to-date with pics and other info during the in between time. We’re playing catchup right now.

I like the design too, but its bulky to carry around; in contrast this looks much more portable. I don’t like the change from the memory stick and adding the extra analogue would add more incentive to buy this product. Besides, I modded my old PSP-1000 with bluetooth…not a very complicated mod, but does require some know-how. Finally, this needs to be hacked for me to buy it, because my favorite aspect of the PSP is the raging homebrew industry. Not looking like it’s won my favor, but will be a good choice for new and average PSP users not familiar to the homebrew scene and/or law abiding citizens without custom firmware.

what are the specs?
any hardware boost?
hows the feel of the L/R buttons under the screen?
any detail information on what you can connect to the PSP GO Via Bluetooth?

Comment by greg

no real hardware boosts… nothing significant anyway, as far as i know. L/R feels just fine too. the Go feels great in your hands.

It’s a PSP Go! not a PS2P why would they add another analog so everyone else would have to upgrade and in trying to do that they come up short and buy a DS instead.

I still can’t understand why they would remove the UMD drive…..

I’m sure the majority of gaming stores aren’t gonna be very interested in pushing it for sales due to them not being able to sell games for it. Stupid.

And why a smaller screen??? It should be a bit bigger. Not all of us have eagle vision.

That’s kinda dumb though, I’d never buy songs online, unless they cant be released in cds, the main reason why I buy cds is so, well, i can have the CD! and the case with the sleeve you pull out with all the artwork and lyrics, If you buy on itunes all you get is the mp3.. may as well just download from limewire or something lol.

A 64bit PSP?? That’s completely unnecessary… Plus, where are you going to find a 64bit processor that small and low power consumption?

A better graphics experience is all in the GPU, not the CPU.

Yeah maybe because I saw on playstation.com it’s almost $250 and thats a lot. Instead od MS pro duo it uses SONY’s M2 but I think its made to be like a PDA or something because of its Bluetooth capability. AND for the 1st time NA & EU model comes first THAT JP !!!!!!

11 – 1 – 09 JP

$250 is not a lot. That’s what I paid for my original PSP with no internal memory…
I think it’s a pretty good price for something with so much power and memory.

except, this isnt replacing the 3000, and porbably wont be as popular in those places. UMD’s will still be made, chill.

on an unrelated note:

I would definatly pick one up… if it werent for the fact that i cant use my 8 gig MS!!

then agin, wiht 16 Gigs, it wont be much of a problem.

If theres a hardware expliot when it comes out, ill get it, but if theres no homebrew, then forget it

i guess i really had my hopes up for something a lil more powerful…

I have a sony m2 memory stick and an adapter so that it also fits in my PSP!!! If I buy the PSP Go, then I’d have 20GB in total. The PSP Go is awesome because you’ll have ALL your games with you ALL the time. Since they are DOWNLOADS, then there are no long waiting times (I assume) the games run faster, no annoying spinning sound. Lower power consumption while playing games means you can play maybe 30 to 60 minutes longer than you’d do with an UMD game.

I agree with the poster of this. At first I didn’t like the design but once the guy at Sonys Press Confrence pulled it out of his jacket pocket it looked really nice.

However, I would never buy this due to the lack of UMD drive and I don’t like the games being avaliable only by DD.

So far, I have not seen ANYTHING that would even remotely make me want to buy one of these. I agree with one of the above posters, bandwidth is a huge problem in a lot of areas and with the average size of PSP games being around 1GB. DL’ing files could take forever!

As a matter of fact, I probably wont be buying any Sony game system until they get it right! ie: 2nd analog, higher specs (CPU+Memory… maybe some PS2 mobile!) possibly with touchscreen, better speakers, mic, camera… you know, actual upgrades!!!

Sony has the power to do all of this, and could rock the handheld world. So why dont they?

Comment by Nicko01

Main reason – Cost. Both to the company and the user. What you suggest is close to an OQO (google it) or “ultraportable” computer. Their specs are around 1GHz and 512MB of RAM (similar to a PS2), and sometimes have touch screens. If you want one of those, expect to pay $1,000+.

In other words, it’s another hardware redesign. Just like the DS Lite was, and the PSP Slim, and the PSP-3000.

The ONLY reason I’m tempted to get a DS Lite is the CPU / RAM upgrade, and the ability to do things a stock DS can’t. This is just a different form factor for the same product I already own. It’s not worth it.

If a PSP2 happens, the only way I figure it’ll be worth it is if homebrew is once again as prevalent an option as it is now. I think most of my time on the PSP is spent either with my older PSX library or SNES, NES, and Genesis.

They should release the games on memory cards and put in the ability to transfer the game to the internal memory. If the only way to get games is by downloading them this system will fail very badly.

Taking a few hours to download a game from the internet on your psp wouldn’t really work well. Also if they allow you to download it to your computer it still wouldn’t work as well since a large portion of people that use a psp are probably console gamers and may not have a computer needed to download a lot of games. (uunlike most of us here)

I believe that the psp go will sell badly, but will eventually be hacked….. I mean, people have said the 3000 will never be hacked, but look at it now, it can have ChickHEN, and can soon have cfw thanks to newfound exploits my bet is that the psp go will at least have homebrew enabled within a year of its release. The ONLY way I would buy one of these is if theres cfw and the price goes down. They are saying that the whole download games to you psp is cool and new, but ppl have been doing it since the dawn of psp hacking. And the specs arent that much greater than the 3000. All they did was give the psp a smaller sliding screen, an apps store, and more memory so they can charge us way more! Once it’s hacked and the price drops at least $50, ill buy one. PSP’s suck without cfw anyway.

IMO I like the lucky design of my PSP. I have large hands.

I was hoping the Go would have a larger screen at least. And while additional memory is nice, it’s useless unless it is actually put to the test.

PSP with CFW >>>>> PSP Go

The price is much higher in Europe, which is a shame. Europe is where Dark Alex resides, am I correct? So, thus giving him higher chance of not buying PSP Go due to its insanely overpriced price. And thus, higher chance of PSPG being secure for a very while. Unless someone buys one and give it to him.

The only thing i’m really worried about is import games. My favourite game is DJ MAX PORTABLE but how the hell would I get that? Oh well. Yet again have to hope for some CFW

Wow, how in the world are you going to hold this thing using the tiny analog controler to play god of war. Have you ever tride Playing God of War with the arrow keys? This is a total step in the wrong direction. Or maybe not. Looks more like a DS now. Wonder if it gets touchscrenn. ;-)

No home button?
That would be lame, it’s such a useful button.

i dont like it at all. removing umd just broke compatibly with older games. it has the same cpu and slow wireless as older psp models. and a smaller screen wtf. not even a ram uprade. also they removed the duo cards for the even more expensiv m2 cards. god sony must like to fail.

yeah im sorry but if sony want this thing to sell they will have to sell it ether at the same price as psp 3000 or a little lower and the only new difference i see that might come to my use is just blue tooth but then again i don’t care that much to want it and plus i have a keyboard using my targus wireless infrared keyboard with my 1000 psp. I <3 my psp 1000 in ceramic white, it is the original and has never done me wrong :)

Another obvious mistake by Sony. They need a new PSP. If they try to milk this ‘cow’ anymore the utters will fall off.

BAH!! u dont know what ur missing out on people PSN is fast as hell it takes me 30 mins or less to download and intstall it takes longer to get to the shops to buy a game theres no waiting 3 minutes for the next part of your game to load and anyone who knows anything about hacking will be able to tell you a built in flash drive just makes the hacking all the more simple the only downside is if your a porker then the L/R buttons are going to suck but hay you might be able to go out and get some exersise instead

I just got my hands on one of these bad boys, i gotta tell ya, it is not so bad. Homebrew games will come soon, there is no doubt about it. With this new type of game system into it, its alot easier to have homebrew games in the psp.
People with big ass hands might have problems handling the game.
For the guy saying that it can’t ready divx files, just get a converter, it takes like 15 minutes to convert a 2 hour .avi file to .mp4 not bad at all.
The download speed isn’t so bad. I have 1gb bandwith, took me a little over 40 minutes to download a 600mb game from their game store.

I give it a 8/10.
