The PSP Go, Hands On…
greg | June 2, 2009
All right, at first I agreed with most of y’all, I wasn’t digging the new design… That’s until I had the opportunity to manhandle one of these bad bitches at E3 earlier, and I must say, despite the smaller screen and whatnot, Sony’s new PSP Go feels wonderful, like a bag of sand… And I should mention, it no doubt packs more portability than the previous models. So again, I gotta give it to Sony.
For those interested in following Dashhacks @ E3; See here. We’ll try and keep that up-to-date with pics and other info during the in between time. We’re playing catchup right now.

no thanks i love my psp phat and slim design
HAHAHA!! maybe the dash hacks team might change the wallpaper above of the old design of the psp to the new (stupid) design of the psp
I like the design too, but its bulky to carry around; in contrast this looks much more portable. I don’t like the change from the memory stick and adding the extra analogue would add more incentive to buy this product. Besides, I modded my old PSP-1000 with bluetooth…not a very complicated mod, but does require some know-how. Finally, this needs to be hacked for me to buy it, because my favorite aspect of the PSP is the raging homebrew industry. Not looking like it’s won my favor, but will be a good choice for new and average PSP users not familiar to the homebrew scene and/or law abiding citizens without custom firmware.
ya me too i dont like this model i think its silly to remove the umd drive
i mean what are the ones like me gonna do with our umds when we upgrade to this model(i dont think i will :p)
yeah!!!!!!!!!!! lova ya!1111111
what are the specs?
any hardware boost?
hows the feel of the L/R buttons under the screen?
any detail information on what you can connect to the PSP GO Via Bluetooth?
no real hardware boosts… nothing significant anyway, as far as i know. L/R feels just fine too. the Go feels great in your hands.
Very nice, looks very portable and user friendly I would love this for my next PSP.
Still would’ve prefered having another analog where they placed start and select.
It’s a PSP Go! not a PS2P why would they add another analog so everyone else would have to upgrade and in trying to do that they come up short and buy a DS instead.
yeah, I hear that… me too. It’s my only real complaint at this point.
i think it will be very hard to move screen while moving when you are playing monster hunter
I still can’t understand why they would remove the UMD drive…..
I’m sure the majority of gaming stores aren’t gonna be very interested in pushing it for sales due to them not being able to sell games for it. Stupid.
And why a smaller screen??? It should be a bit bigger. Not all of us have eagle vision.
With that logic, iPods are a failure…
You can buy music via Online AND Compact Disc. So it isn’t even close to the same.
You are wrong… ipods put music stores out of business
That’s kinda dumb though, I’d never buy songs online, unless they cant be released in cds, the main reason why I buy cds is so, well, i can have the CD! and the case with the sleeve you pull out with all the artwork and lyrics, If you buy on itunes all you get is the mp3.. may as well just download from limewire or something lol.
afaik the screen is the same size. also this won’t replace the 3000 so it doesn’t really matter if it has a umd drive or not.
Actually the screen is SMALLER
I think they will sell alot more PSN cards and maybe have download cards for specific games. Kind of like the beta vouchers, add-on codes, etc.
is that also 32bit?? if yes, why they dont make 64bit for greater graphics experience.. T_T
What a common misconception. This is a good starting article.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64_bit
A 64bit PSP?? That’s completely unnecessary… Plus, where are you going to find a 64bit processor that small and low power consumption?
A better graphics experience is all in the GPU, not the CPU.
You bought a Jaguar, didn’t you?
Judging by the comparison of the original desing and PSPGo the PSPGo’s screen is smaller. Don’t belive me look for your self.
It’s smaller screen probably gives it a higher resolution compared to the current screen. Not saying thats the reason but it could’ve been
Yeah maybe because I saw on playstation.com it’s almost $250 and thats a lot. Instead od MS pro duo it uses SONY’s M2 but I think its made to be like a PDA or something because of its Bluetooth capability. AND for the 1st time NA & EU model comes first THAT JP !!!!!!
10 – 1 – 09 EU & NA
11 – 1 – 09 JP
^_^
$250 is not a lot. That’s what I paid for my original PSP with no internal memory…
I think it’s a pretty good price for something with so much power and memory.
Can’t w8 for MSG PW and little big planet
Bag of sand?
Have you ever held a little cloth bag of sand? It just kinda wraps itself around your hands. I think that was what he was going for.
The 40 Year Old Virgin :)
lol?
watch the movie and you’ll know what he means.
LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
That is so funny I just remembered what you mean
OH me so horny me love you long time hahahahahaha lol
oh come on you could have done better than that…..
lol thats what i was thinking when i read.
omg i was watching that the other day! lol when they asked him how “it” felt, man i was cracking up! a bag of sand lol
LMAO
I wonder how the internet will be on the go, its gotta be good bcause with the “getting games over playstation network” thing.
I wonder if the Bluetooth will be able to get hacked so I can connect it to my HTC Touch and use my phone as a modem and go online wherever I want to download games… this thing could be very very sweet.
If it can run homebrew i will upgrade from my psp 2000. The PSP make and design screams homebrew. Otherwise might as well just get a GP2X or Pandora.
Pandora FTW!!
just need some cash to get one.. :(
And I need to get on the waiting list sometime…
Ok, just saw specs on another site that say cpu is capped out at 333mhz still? didnt mention onboard memory tho… but im assuming that the same quality of games are going to be played on this as the other psp’s? that sucks, only reason id buy this system is if it was to be more towards the ps2 gaming quality… really had my hopes up… oh well…
That would mean there would be software compatibility issues with the other hardware models, which is not a very good idea (for less educated users specifically).
sure it’s great if!!!!….. every where around the globe has hi speed internet connection, i wonder how fast is psp go can download a game from PSN… is it takes 2 hours, or forever?…. hahahaha, i keep my old psp….
by the way, why not they(sony) compete with ipod so they make PSP phone?….
except, this isnt replacing the 3000, and porbably wont be as popular in those places. UMD’s will still be made, chill.
on an unrelated note:
I would definatly pick one up… if it werent for the fact that i cant use my 8 gig MS!!
then agin, wiht 16 Gigs, it wont be much of a problem.
If theres a hardware expliot when it comes out, ill get it, but if theres no homebrew, then forget it
umd’s will be made, but for how long? in the interview with the psp rep he says that they are moving to a “digital” age and this is the the first step… i can only imagine what sort of digital rights setup that sony will use, and how it will change modded psp users…
i guess i really had my hopes up for something a lil more powerful…
I have a sony m2 memory stick and an adapter so that it also fits in my PSP!!! If I buy the PSP Go, then I’d have 20GB in total. The PSP Go is awesome because you’ll have ALL your games with you ALL the time. Since they are DOWNLOADS, then there are no long waiting times (I assume) the games run faster, no annoying spinning sound. Lower power consumption while playing games means you can play maybe 30 to 60 minutes longer than you’d do with an UMD game.
you do know that there’s a 16GB memory card stick pro out there on cell right?
wait…what about the speed, by its looks it makes me feel like its speed or its Ghzmite be lowered down a littleor it didnt?
the new psp will definately be a failure and it will suck. another thing is that for sure it wont be able to be hacked, so i feel so sorry for tha gay ass hacking teams that want to hack.
Everything can be hacked. Stop trolling and go back to 4chan.
Your username is quite appropriate.
go fist urself
wish they’d make psp 2 instead of makin psp go cause people ar waiting for psp not psp half done, we all want 2nd thumbstick cause games like cod ar lame without it

Bleah :-&…”Main input/output Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11b) (Wi-Fi)”
Still 802.11b? NO G? God dammit…
my god its pretty much the same fucking thing as a 3000, only that the screen slides up, buttons placed a little differently, and it has a catchy new name, another slight upgrade, maybe in 2 years they’ll barely notice how the touch screen revolutionized the DS and ipods….
@ LIONEL
Thank you for this,
@ MTK
Agreed… ahg.
Milking out the old cow, obviously.
Let’s just wait and see how people will embrace this one once it’s released.
No point upgrading to PSP Go either, IMHO.
Unless of course it comes with a CFW… hahaha… in my dreams. xD
I agree with the poster of this. At first I didn’t like the design but once the guy at Sonys Press Confrence pulled it out of his jacket pocket it looked really nice.
However, I would never buy this due to the lack of UMD drive and I don’t like the games being avaliable only by DD.
LEFT 4 DEAD 2 NOV. 17, 2009 by the way i dont like the psp go it doesnt seem confortable and plus no UMD’s what the hell sony went to far this time
you can still buy a 300 if you want it wont be replacing it also the original psp isn’t too comfortable this on the other hand looks like it will be a lot more “confortable” lol
yeah he is right
look cool but looks are deceiving
ey and “lol” your right LEDFT 4 DEAD 2
HELLS YEAH
So far, I have not seen ANYTHING that would even remotely make me want to buy one of these. I agree with one of the above posters, bandwidth is a huge problem in a lot of areas and with the average size of PSP games being around 1GB. DL’ing files could take forever!
As a matter of fact, I probably wont be buying any Sony game system until they get it right! ie: 2nd analog, higher specs (CPU+Memory… maybe some PS2 mobile!) possibly with touchscreen, better speakers, mic, camera… you know, actual upgrades!!!
Sony has the power to do all of this, and could rock the handheld world. So why dont they?
Main reason – Cost. Both to the company and the user. What you suggest is close to an OQO (google it) or “ultraportable” computer. Their specs are around 1GHz and 512MB of RAM (similar to a PS2), and sometimes have touch screens. If you want one of those, expect to pay $1,000+.
No you are wrong.
PS2 has 295mhz processor and 32MB RAM
because their a monopoly without any serious competition so they don’t need to upgrade it too much.
money makin schemes
money
money makin schemes
nintendo?
microsoft?
they have plenty of competition but are getting the crap kicked out of them
Its missing a camera… DSi has one, and now the psp is missing it.
How many people would use a camera on a PSP? Almost all cellphones have them already… The quality is almost always terrible.
WRONG. I watched a of my PSP on my TV with the Video-out cable. It looked almost like a TV show. The quality is quite amazing. Even if it’s 1.3MP, I didn’t notice any of it. Phone cameras are generally a lot smaller. Try it yourself.
In other words, it’s another hardware redesign. Just like the DS Lite was, and the PSP Slim, and the PSP-3000.
The ONLY reason I’m tempted to get a DS Lite is the CPU / RAM upgrade, and the ability to do things a stock DS can’t. This is just a different form factor for the same product I already own. It’s not worth it.
If a PSP2 happens, the only way I figure it’ll be worth it is if homebrew is once again as prevalent an option as it is now. I think most of my time on the PSP is spent either with my older PSX library or SNES, NES, and Genesis.
just increase the screen size to the reg psp and they mite have a chance
is it touch screen cause some of the website said it does and does it have a camera
and plus what is the diffrence between it and the old one
they probably don’t want to make a new system yet cause they want to get every penny from that psp’s “10 year life cycle”
This will be sweet, i will definately get it. are they still the same games? or is it a totally new console, not just the same with variations. I wonder if they will ever make an xbox portable (i like sony better, it would just be cool)
Are the buttons loud still? Seriously, when I’m in class and playing tekken against my friend, really loud X_X The directional buttons are pretty quiet compared to the face buttons…wtf
They should release the games on memory cards and put in the ability to transfer the game to the internal memory. If the only way to get games is by downloading them this system will fail very badly.
Taking a few hours to download a game from the internet on your psp wouldn’t really work well. Also if they allow you to download it to your computer it still wouldn’t work as well since a large portion of people that use a psp are probably console gamers and may not have a computer needed to download a lot of games. (uunlike most of us here)
I believe that the psp go will sell badly, but will eventually be hacked….. I mean, people have said the 3000 will never be hacked, but look at it now, it can have ChickHEN, and can soon have cfw thanks to newfound exploits my bet is that the psp go will at least have homebrew enabled within a year of its release. I hope that hackers take the psp go as a personal challenge
i’ll bet it will be hacked within 30 minutes of it’s release
Looks stupid
@LIONEL
Are those honestly the current specs? You must be kiddding me, wifi b only?? NO Ms duo slot? WTF sony. Id love the 16gb flash memory If it supported DivX!!! I was going to buy this new psp, but now that i realize whats in it, forget it. its just a waste of money, i already own a phat one on which i can play my UMDs and PSone titles off the memory stick. I wonder if people realize that if they buy this their UMD collection will be garage sale material. lol im ready for a psp2 already.
lol thats pretty funny, but you still got a good ol PHAT? i love mine, im surprised it lasted me this long, and by the looks of it im not gonna be uprgading soon…
The ONLY way I would buy one of these is if theres cfw and the price goes down. They are saying that the whole download games to you psp is cool and new, but ppl have been doing it since the dawn of psp hacking. And the specs arent that much greater than the 3000. All they did was give the psp a smaller sliding screen, an apps store, and more memory so they can charge us way more! Once it’s hacked and the price drops at least $50, ill buy one. PSP’s suck without cfw anyway.
IMO I like the lucky design of my PSP. I have large hands.
I was hoping the Go would have a larger screen at least. And while additional memory is nice, it’s useless unless it is actually put to the test.
PSP with CFW >>>>> PSP Go
Hmm, the design is like the 1st concept PSP design… I say its ok but not that great…
but one question is stuck in my mind… is this going to be like the PSP 3000 where its like ‘Impossible’ to hack…
there is homebrew on psp-3000’s……mayeb the chickHEN exploit works on it?
what about software changes? will it have new fw?
The price is much higher in Europe, which is a shame. Europe is where Dark Alex resides, am I correct? So, thus giving him higher chance of not buying PSP Go due to its insanely overpriced price. And thus, higher chance of PSPG being secure for a very while. Unless someone buys one and give it to him.
He gets donations from a lot of happy cfw users. I think he’d get enough for a PSP Go ;)
The only thing i’m really worried about is import games. My favourite game is DJ MAX PORTABLE but how the hell would I get that? Oh well. Yet again have to hope for some CFW
Wow, how in the world are you going to hold this thing using the tiny analog controler to play god of war. Have you ever tride Playing God of War with the arrow keys? This is a total step in the wrong direction. Or maybe not. Looks more like a DS now. Wonder if it gets touchscrenn. ;-)
Well if no one can hack this new model i’ll just stick with my old psp that can run homebrews….
I love my PSP-1000 CFW’ed and my PSP-3000 even more now… LOL wth “little bag of sand”, more like “Little bag of RETARDATION” man, u cudv’ made like a bloody PSPhone or something.. instead they make a slidy PSP with a smaller screen and missing pieces, and just as hard 2 hack.. way 2 fuck up the most powerful and awesome portable gaming system out Sony.. but then again its wat u do best
rubber knife, FTW!
No home button?
That would be lame, it’s such a useful button.
There’s one…look closer…
How do you store the game in the psp GO?
basically, the new psp sucks. im stickin wit a 4gb card on a psp-1000 series. better that way. besides, hacking is the only way to go.
i dont like it at all. removing umd just broke compatibly with older games. it has the same cpu and slow wireless as older psp models. and a smaller screen wtf. not even a ram uprade. also they removed the duo cards for the even more expensiv m2 cards. god sony must like to fail.
yeah im sorry but if sony want this thing to sell they will have to sell it ether at the same price as psp 3000 or a little lower and the only new difference i see that might come to my use is just blue tooth but then again i don’t care that much to want it and plus i have a keyboard using my targus wireless infrared keyboard with my 1000 psp. I <3 my psp 1000 in ceramic white, it is the original and has never done me wrong :)
Another obvious mistake by Sony. They need a new PSP. If they try to milk this ‘cow’ anymore the utters will fall off.
this ain’t PSP … This is mylo..an internet fun device from sony,((check out the USA site of sony)) it does have a analog stick on left side of upper screen,,, but it ain’t a gaming console!! PSP Original Design ROCKS!!
its a little bag of s***.. case closed
BAH!! u dont know what ur missing out on people PSN is fast as hell it takes me 30 mins or less to download and intstall it takes longer to get to the shops to buy a game theres no waiting 3 minutes for the next part of your game to load and anyone who knows anything about hacking will be able to tell you a built in flash drive just makes the hacking all the more simple the only downside is if your a porker then the L/R buttons are going to suck but hay you might be able to go out and get some exersise instead
I just got my hands on one of these bad boys, i gotta tell ya, it is not so bad. Homebrew games will come soon, there is no doubt about it. With this new type of game system into it, its alot easier to have homebrew games in the psp.
People with big ass hands might have problems handling the game.
For the guy saying that it can’t ready divx files, just get a converter, it takes like 15 minutes to convert a 2 hour .avi file to .mp4 not bad at all.
The download speed isn’t so bad. I have 1gb bandwith, took me a little over 40 minutes to download a 600mb game from their game store.
I give it a 8/10.
