New PSP Named and It’s Coming This Fall, Apparently…

greg | April 29, 2009

According to 1UP sources it’s about to go down — all at this years E3…

PSP Go! [Rumoured] Design

Many have speculated that the update would be called either the PSP 2 or PSP-4000, but our sources claim Sony will forgo a numerical moniker in favor of a subtitle. We’ve heard various rumored code names for the project (including PSP Slide, PSP Flip, and PSP Go!), but given that Sony has introduced the Go! brand of add-ons (the Go!View video on-demand service and 1.3 megapixel Go!Cam) for the European PSP, it seems likely that the new system will in fact be called the PSP Go! Our sources further confirm that this redesign will be available in two SKUs, with either eight or 16 GB of built-in flash memory. The system is set for release in Japan this September with a U.S. debut coming in either late October or early November.

In addition, since the UMD is going away, Sony will have over 100 classic and new PSP titles available for download at launch (Gran Turismo Mobile is said to be one of the premier launch titles). As for the hardware itself, the redesign will include a d-pad, analog nub, and face buttons as part of a sliding unit sticking out below the screen (as seen in our mockup above). Unfortunately for those looking for twin-stick shooter controls, the new system will not have a second analog stick, but instead will remain consistent with the current control configuration.

Note: the PSP depicted above is not an actual “PSP2″, “PSP-4000″, or “PSP Go!” photo.

we all know what your thinking, so it not really necisary to say it

anyway, sounds tight. hopefully, sony wont implement too many changes from the 3000, so that when a full hack is found, it can be used on both.

You DO know that the picture is not what it would really look like right? I mean I might not be one to give Sony much credit but they are smart enough not to put the L1 R1 in that ridiculous place on the part with the screen.

Dude that is sooo true.. What if someone just did it to fool around and it turned out to be a big lie xD How in the world is someone supposed to reach way up the top of the sliding screen to hit the L and R buttons and btw it would push the sliding screen back down if you would hit the buttons repeatedly. IDK this sucks though. I had expected a second analog stick and a key pad.. boo..

…for what? Please, give me a good reason why this ridiculous looking PSP is good in anyway. With the slim, we got well, a slimmer PSP and more ram, and tv out functions. With 3000, we got a weird, but somehow better screen, a built-in mic, and improved tv out functions. This loses UMD, probably loses memory stick, and for what? Cosmetics… What’s so great about a sliding screen, really?

For starters, I can guarantee you that Sony won’t be removing the MS Pro Duo port, if only for the reason that people will, at the very least, need to be able to transfer their saves from their MS Pro Duo to their new PSP’s built in storage.

On top of that, you also have to consider that this is all speculation, and that there aren’t any solid details here. Wait until E3, and if it actually gets announced, get your panties in a bunch then when there may actually be a reason to.

Finally, and this is my own personal speculation but, if Sony is essentially going in the same direction with the “PSP Go!” that Nintendo went with the DSi, it would not be at all surprising if this new model has new features, or upgraded hardware that would accommodate new features in the future, like, perhaps, downloadable firmware add-ons that get installed to the built in storage, larger flash for exclusive features in future firmwares, or more RAM/CPU/GPU hardware to accommodate for potentially hardware intensive exclusive features in future games. And even then, for all we know Sony could be including the Go! Camera and GPS device among other possible hardware additions built in.

So how about, instead of complaining about how Sony’s screwing up when you have no idea whether they are or not, you jump on the speculation bandwagon until E3 and find out what’s going on then. It’s just over a month away, you can’t possibly be that impatient.

If I need to point out the obvious, a sliding screen saves space, so when it’s folded up, the unit is much smaller.

Oh man, you hit the nail on the head with that comment, i am one of the stupid bastards who bought a PSP 1003 on launch day due to hype & saying about GT Mobile being released at the same time, well $ony, you can’t use that same tactic to sell PSP Go’s, as we are a lot wiser now, especially me.

Comment by xjen0vax
2009-04-30 00:36:33

Logically, if GT Mobile were being released as a Launch title, it would come out at the same time as the console, so instead of saying you won’t buy the thing because you “fell for it” last time, you could always wait a week to see what to make of it instead of making a hasty and potentially disastrous decision. The fact that you didn’t in the first place means that you’re no smarter than the next consumer, who also gets blindly sucked in by the hype of new technology. If you actually were any smarter, you would have realized this in the first place.

But that’s just logically.

Consider the following:

a) There are still people that like to have the big, shiny, new gadget on the market, and there are a lot of them, so even if there are those that are against buying it in principle, Sony will still make healthy sales just based on those trend-whores who like to have the newest of everything.

b) I still don’t understand the argument behind an upgrade not being worth it without an extra analog stick. For starters, this isn’t a successor to the PSP, it’s another incremental upgrade with some serious hardware changes, but nothing that effects the gameplay experience of current or future PSP titles. Not to mention that I still believe that a handheld can do plenty well without even one analog stick.

I honestly hope Sony doesn’t make the wrong choice and leave out a LONG OVERDUED 2nd analog stick and touch-screen capabilities. The sliding screen is useless without touch nd ur gonna have 2 open the psp everytime just 2 move through options; that would b plain stupid!
Here’s hoping for a successful new PSP model.

Very good point with the sliding screen, however rough your English was. Maybe they’d have simple exterior buttons to operate the added Go! features, aka phone or gps or camera, and leave the opening for hardcore one stick gaming.

wtf, whats the point of the sliding screen then?

i thought they would add something to that extra space, instead they are just relocating the buttons?

not only that but now it seems a lot more uncomfortable to hold and play with it

seriously, whats the point? is it only because it looks cool?

For the record, Killzone 2’s visuals aren’t nearly as lush as Little Big Planet’s. Killzone 2, graphically, is no more than a two-bit Bad Company clone. It’s not particularly impressive, let alone detailed or colorful.

Comment by KingPepper

- Note: the PSP depicted above is not an actual “PSP2″, “PSP-4000″, or “PSP Go!” -

I saw this article last night. I still think its all speculation, Plus this design is STILL just done by Photoshop.

The only benefit I see with a sliding screen is maybe they can have an even BIGGER screen.

It seems like they are still going to try and make the games cross platformed (1000,2000, 3000) with only including 1 nub. But, idk what they will do with the touch screen…

They could make it so older games are still able to be played on the newer system like Nintendo does. But again, with all these new games and titles coming to the PSP this year I don’t see why they would sink so much money into an older PSP if they are just going to release another PSP so soon.

Just my speculation,
PSP 4000 (PSP2):
-Sliding Screen
-Camera and Mic
-No UMD

Thats all that will be different.
I would love to also see 2 nubs and L2 R2. But I don’t see it happening.

Comment by coldie
2009-04-29 16:19:52

I see the second nub happening. Idk about the L2 and R2.. that alone I think is stupid and wouldn’t want it. I do think there will be a second nub though. I have faith! ahaha jk. Well I most definitely don’t believe this is the new system. We didn’t wait too long for this. Someone was bored, took all their time doing this fake, and forgot to drop the L and R buttons xD Idiots!

Stop looking at cosmetics and think what specs it will have, 2 GHZ cpu? 1gb GPU ram? maybe 2gb ram? that would be sick, maybe not possible without having a 50 lb battery, but sick, screw the cosmetics, give me a fcking atari joystick with one button, but give me raw power behind it

Man, it sounds sweet to have built in memory, and it be great to have a new design. But crap, I really don’t think they’ll be able to hack it.
The PSP-3000 tiff exploit took months to find, and even at that they still haven’t got it down, its still in development.
But only time will tell, just can’t wait to see some new games come out :D

This does bring up many speculations on how the system will look providing the sources information is correct. We all knew about the slide screen being incorperated into the PSP2, however, the benefits of it is whats getting everyone worried. Pros for the slide screen I’d say is movies and music. If Sony will utilize a bigger screen, then viewing movies on the go will indeed look great especially since my job requires me to travel and I can comfortably watch something on the plane. As for music, with all the 3rd party accessories that will follow launch, mounting the system my give it a stylish look when hanging with friends, drinking a few beers, or playing some cards together. How about protecting the screen though? Keeping it clean? We all dropped our PSP at least once in its life and either they break right away, or you’ll get away and nothing will happen. Is this flip design going to hurt in the event we drop our system? Will there be covers that will protect it securly enough to withstand a drop or two at least?

Controls: Everyone will love to have the dual analog, no questions asked. The more important question though is the placement of buttons. Will the controls be comfortable enough for those with big or small hands? Will we be needing an accessory to extend the grip or will Sony provide a better layout? I don’t enjoy the slim PSP much mainly because my hands are big and if I want to play something for an extended period of time, I am pretty much sh*t out of luck thanks to cramping. My PSP-1000 however, I certainly get more playing time when the charger isn’t acting up (it has been through a lot).

Options/OS: Will Sony incorperate a new OS for us to view when we turn on our PSP2? Will there be better options for customization or will we need to rely on hacking methods to better accomodate our needs? Is Sony going to implement more programs such as Skype and, hopefully, an IM program from the go or will we need to wait another 2yrs before we receive such blessings?

Games: My biggest concern is in no way the dual analog or buying memorysticks. My number one concern is will Sony attempt to make us purchase the SAME game in order to play it on the PSP2 or will we have to stick to UMD’s on the original PSP? Will Sony incorporate an option to transfer said game to a memorystick from the PSP (via firmware upgrade) and play on the PSP2? Will the PSP games be compatible period on the PSP2 in some way?

E3 will be our only reliable source of information, but til then, we can only speculate on what is to come.

It’s just speculation. Nothing but. I’m so pissed with the is it? is it not a rumour? shit. There is literally no point in arguing about anything like this.

Wait patiently for the PSP2 (if it even exists!) to come out and wait again for it to be replaced with something better.
Do you honestly think Sony is really listening each and every opinion? Is there an employee from Sony scouting forums for opinions? No. There’s probably some market research where they take 5 or 10 people in a room and test the product. Sony is a corporation much like Microsoft. It isn’t like GNU freeware where people take your opinions via mailing lists and bug reports, its a quick and simple solution, so expect the PSP2 to lack many many things u ask for. Hell, they’ll probably release more firmware updates until they’re blue in the face.

Just wait. If it comes, it comes, if not who the fuck cares? That’s the way technology is. I can think of many flaws and improvements I would love to see on devices, hardware and software, but many of those “ideas” don’t get implemented.
What if the PSP had a touchscreen…What if? What if the Pope had tentacles? hmmm….

Its up to Sony to listen. Its they’re product they can do whatever they want with it. The consumer, naturally, is restricted…but of course, there are hacks.

OK this is starting to piss me off.

sony WILL NOT, and should not, include a second analog.

not until an actually psp2 at least.

a second stick would change too much and wouldnt be able to be used, in order to keep compatibility with the older PSP’s.

think about it, a new game is made with dual stick support. will it work on older models? not without coding an entire new cotrol scheme.

and its not like old games will work with it.

on a seperate note, i personally belive will sell, seperatly of course (gotta majke a profit), a external drive for the psp. this will either a. dump UMD’s or b. Let PSN know you own the game, giving you the download.

if choice a., i belive sony even may continue making UMDS, just for compatibility (fuck spelling)
if b. im thinking possibly satelite psn acces?? just an idea

idk, well see at E3

hmmmm Im glad that the picture shown isnt the actual system…The whole point of the flip screen was to have a larger screen in comparison yet maintain the body size of the slim… as far as ergonomics goes I think Id rather have the original style body. If Sony was smart they would release a slim with no UMD drive bring back the IR add bluetooth use the flip area for a keyboard and have Ericson step in and give us some celly hardware.

I agree with the last part, I would certainly love to see a new PSP with a 3G antenna and GSM capabilities. This would allow for playing games online on the go via a local 3G network through the end user’s preferred provider. Throw in an extra microphone on one side and, at the very least, you would have a handset style PSP for use with Skype on the go, essentially turning it into a mobile Voip phone.

Mango The old games would stay the same and still work with the configuration but if there is dual any new games that come out would have dual joystick playability. For example coded arms you can change the controls of it use the joystick or pad. But playing with the pad sucks ALOT!

Comment by xjen0vax

The problem with this is that developers would then build control schemes entirely around this setup, and entirely forfeit the responsibility of making a decent control setup that works with older PSP hardware, making newer games unfriendly to 1000-3000 owners.

Was this redesign really necessary? I know they’re trying to hold of the DSi, but there doesn’t seem to be anything there of much appeal. At least with the DSi, they bumped up the RAM and processor speed (although that’s not useful until someone decides to use it).

If this doesn’t have any increased specs, I don’t see any reason to purchase. My Slim will work just fine.

“YES i know MS are greedy bastards, but at least when they release something, its something worthy of thinking about getting.”

I love Microsoft games and systems as much as the next guy, in fact I prefer the 360 to the PS3 by far, but I don’t agree with that statement. When the 360 came out, 16% of them failed from various hardware problems. That’s a pretty big number. In fact, even after several years of updating the consoles a very large portion of them still continue to fail because of overheating problems.

A Camera
100% User Customization (such as allowing consumers to edit the user interface without hacking)
32 gigs of Hard-drive space
Psp Transfer (transfer your umds to the 4000 from your old psp)
Memory Stick Port
Slide Screen

Moral? This looks like trendy bullshit now. Assuming this image is remotely accurate, which it obviously isn’t, guess what? We’ll have fun with the unit. We’ll have fun hacking it. We’ll have fun “outsmarting” Sony with their firmware updates. And when something new comes out, we’ll have fun with it as well. It’ll appear to be a challenge, then some Swedish or Chinese kid will hack the living shit out of it.

So what? Nothing to be said that wasn’t said about the Slim, PSP 3000 or any other console. Sit back, relax, and see what happens.

why does everyone want a second analog stick? it wouldn’t be too hard to include one, or even make games that would use it. but the problem is that all these new games that use the second analog stick wouldn’t work on the psp 1000/2000/3000 at all.

i could easily be wrong about this, and the new psp could be on a whole new level (like the ps3) where the new games would be so good, that you would actually pay for a second console. but this would probably piss off alot of people because the amount psp 1000/2000/3000 games released would slowly decrease (similar to gameboy advance)

Nothing is unhackable. It took a while for those responsible to hack the 1000. the first battery exploit was not the most convient either because it involved alot of extra hardware. The point is they found a way. Give it time, some one will find a way to get past the barriers.

Its pretty safe to assume it won’t look like this. I’ll buy it as long as they don’t sacrifice ergonomics, no scanline issues, and full screen TV conectivity.

My biggest concern is the software. There are going to be people who are going to want this and not have to worry about things like a computer or a wifi connection. They are going want to buy the unit and want to browse the games in a store and not on a computer. I don’t know about other people, but I would want to have unlimited access to the software like our older handhelds, and not have to worry about accessing a server everytime I want to play a different game. Knowing Sony, they will find a way to keep us from backing it up to our computer or will make it so it only works for that PSP. Granted there will be an internal flash but, if it’s full you either have to delete it and install another one. Yes, this is how we currently do it with our hacked slim or phats, but most have immediate access to that software be it ISO or UMD. I guess we won’t know until it is released.

The design looks shit and sliding LCD WTF??? What is Sony thinking??? I’m sticking to my PSP Slim 2000. This is the best handheld game device. Just load pirated ISO games, pirated psx games, pirated emulated games, damn it rules!
