PSP Firmware 5.50 to be Released Soon

greg | April 20, 2009

Ch’yeah, like we didn’t see this coming now that the recently discovered TIFF exploit has blown up… Posted by Eric Lempel over at the official PlayStation Blog are details concerning the soon-to-be released PSP Firmware 5.50. What’s new? Allow me to quote –

The firmware update will introduce an Information Board on the PSP system’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface. Those of you who have a PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) may be familiar with this feature, which displays news and updates from the world of PlayStation in a scrolling ticker in the upper right-hand corner of your TV screen. Now you’ll be able to read up-to-date information about upcoming games, new content available on PlayStation Store, and other news right on your PSP whenever you’re at a wireless Internet hotspot.

In addition, we’ll be adding a few more enhancements with the 5.50 update:

  • Memory Stick improvements – You’ll be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo for music, videos and photos. Separately, the available space required to download a file from PlayStation Store to your Memory Stick has been reduced significantly.
  • Internet search for games directly from the XMB – You’ll be able to easily search the Internet for information about your PSP games. Select the icon for the game, hit the Triangle button, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title. This feature was added to PS3 with the recent 2.70 update.
  • Trend Micro trial – PSP’s Internet browser is a great tool for checking out your favorite Web sites on the go, and we’re teaming up with the Internet security experts at Trend Micro to make the Web browsing experience safer and more secure. With the 5.50 update, you’ll have the option to access a free trial of two Trend Micro services:
    • Trend Micro Web Security uses Web reputation technology to block PSP owners from accidentally visiting a Web site that may contain malicious content designed to steal personal information and confidential data.
    • Trend Micro Kids’ Safety uses URL filtering technology to prevent children from accessing Web sites that feature inappropriate content.

And of course they’ve likely patched said TIFF exploit; so when 5.50 hits, don’t rush to upgrade, not yet anyway. We’ll keep you posted.

Like @iRANG said, they finally figured out how to use iRShell. Why did it take them FIVE!!! years since the release of the PSP to figure out that people like to organise stuff into folders????

95% useless update. Subfolders is good, and hopefully for us CFW users we can make subfolders for all of those games and homebrew. Probably not though, so this is still pretty much useless.

Creating sub folders under game for homebrew category can be made possible with game_categories plugin. but creating sub folder on music is not available though….

But i really like the idea, on out of the box solution :)

This proves, once and for all, that Sony is plain stupid. Seriously now, include a trial version of an anti spam software? Who the fuck is going to buy that? Simple answer: no one. Oh, and child protection? Like yeah, sure, they’re going to view porn sites on their PSPs because it’s so much more comfortable than on their PCs. Damn. If they really wanted to provide a content filtering system they should have partnered with Google / Mozilla Foundation / OpenDNS. It would have been free and much, much better.

Damn man, these huge corporations that think that only other huge corporations are good are going to die really soon. Why do you think they partnered with Trend Micro? Because it’s some big company that asked for a lot of money for this project and the old “it’s expensive so it must be good” crap thinking kicked in.

Stupid, very stupid decision.

OK, Trend Micro… pieces of crap, and waste of time… honesty i agree with sum smart people here for the fact of them STILL not making the psp a friend, and messaging based unit still is a damn shame… trophies would also be freakin great, but im sure these lazy asses dont have the time to create stuff of that kinda brilliance… so they just focus on pointless retardation(wow big word), i mean come on … seriously when was the last time you heard of anyones psp catching a trogen, or sumones identity being stolen ???

PSP Firmware 5.50 released
Sony has released PSP Firmware 5.50. You can update via your PSP’s network update feature. However users looking to take advantage of the TIFF exploit will want to hold off updating.

Key features introduced in PSP Firmware 5.50:

* XMB Information Board similar to the PS3’s
* Unregistered browsing on the PlayStation Store
* Create and access sub-folders for music, videos and photos
* Internet search for games directly from the XMB
* Free trial for two Trend Micro Internet security services

Wonderful!
Having no previous PSP knowledge, I get all pumped up to get the latest model of PSP. I buy Final Fantasy Tactics and start craving more old PSX games as I enthusiastically put music, pictures, and SOFTWARE UPDATES on my console to find I’ve stuck myself in download purgatory.
Please help me hack ASAP! I’m dying to play my freshly downloaded cso and pbp files from demonoid!

you guy’s realize that to be able to play games downloaded off of the PSN you have to have a certain firmware, yes? For the FF:VII that they re-released you have to 5.5 firmware

Comment by b0bb3rt
2009-06-09 14:21:33

Yeah so what if you need 5.5 to run the FF:VII psn release, thanks to tools available on this site, and Astroburn, I was able to rip my PS1 version of FF:VII from the original game CD’s and encode them into a single 3disc Eboot that works just fine. I can’t seem to get FF:VIII to work past certain fights unless I pass up drawing out the GF’s from that boss… So if Sony ever releases a working FF:VIII for PSP then I will buy that, but as long as my personal rips work I will continue to thank PSP-Hacks and Disk-tools and say sorry sony, you allready have enough of my money already, and I am still saving up for a PS3.
