Firmware 5.03 TIFF Exploit: Now on Slim and Fat Models. And the PSP-3000?!

greg | April 15, 2009

Just a few days ago you read about this newly discovered TIFF exploit running on PSP-1000 (Fat) models with firmware 5.03. Today the same exploit is now functioning on the PSP-2000 (Slim), but sadly, still, MaTiAz mentions no PSP-3000 support… Or wait… What the… Could it be?!

What you just witnessed appears to be a PSP-3000 running firmware 5.02 that is indeed vulnerable to MaTiAz’s or some derivation of MaTiAz’s TIFF exploit. As always, stay tuned.

Kickass, there is still hope. Hopefully, I’ll stop seeing all the whine-y kids with their PSP-3000’s…

Sorry Mike this is not in reply to you ;) Just putting it at top so that it can hopefully be ‘corrected’

PSP says version 5.02, text on this site says 5.03 in titles and 5.02 in description.

Trippy :S lol

Being as it’s 5.02 in the vid I think it’s safe to say it’s for that…

(Please feel free to delete this comment once corrected ;))

WTF? Why do people always hide there Mac Address. What the hell can someone possibly do with your PSP Mac Address

Comment by Lelouch15
2009-04-15 12:35:18

They can say “I have your mac address” on those youtube vids just to troll you. I don’t know what they can do with it though >_<.

Comment by Daniel
2009-04-15 14:02:39

Actually people can code applications to do checks on the MAC Address associated with the PSP. If the MAC address matches (the ‘whitelist’ of the only allowed PSPs in the app) the dev can code the application to quit, turn the PSP off, or even format the flash0. It’s used sometimes to protect people from sharing secret projects.

On the other hand people can code in a ‘blacklist’, for people they know are not allowed to use a certain program, using MAC Addresses, as they are unique to each PSP.

2009-04-15 12:53:22

each PSP’s MAC is “unique”. so people are afraid that Sony can see the MAC, find what store it was sent to, and find the person they sold it to. I guess its possible, but not very likely.

Comment by Mango
2009-04-15 13:22:09

Yea, but cant you change it somehow?
i could have sworn i saw a way to change it, either in DCv8 or PSPTool 0.9…

Use Ultimate VSHmenu. It has an option to hide your mac address for something else.

MAC addresses are stored on all wireless hardware in the 802.11 specification. They are unique and can ONLY be programmed once to a one-time-programmable ROM chip. They can be used to identify you, though, but generally you have nothing to worry about.
When you see that someone “changed” it, they are just modifying what the software tells you (in the PSP’s case). The MAC address identified by something like a wireless router will always be the same, unless spoofed (which can only be done on a computer, not a PSP).

Comment by shearx
2009-04-20 18:56:22

actually, any piece of network hardware has a mac address, not just wireless hardware. LAN network adapters, routers, switches, WLAN cards, PSPs… you name it, if its not a network of ANY kind, it has a MAC address.

Remains to be seen if this can enable homebrew on the console itself in a HEN format or if can lead to kernel access and a custom firmware installation.

And last I check no one’s broken the PS3 yet to play free games like the 360 and Wii so it’s not a 100%.

Comment by Platinum Alex (Sorry I couldn't resist lol)
2009-04-16 06:16:13

And that would be one way of just displaying “Hello World” on the screen lol

But if you look at the pictures included in the archive on anything but the PSP you’ll see that it is in fact a picture. And it looks nothing like the code that is run and displayed on the PSP screen ;)

This may not be kernal access or working on 3000’s yet ‘confirmed’ but it is a great step in the right direction.

Congrats to all involved :D

It’s frightening that you think there’s a correlation. Laughing at someone’s misfortune is neither overbearing pride nor an inflated sense of importance. Perhaps the word “noob” made you think it had a condescending tone but in this context, it’s pretty obvious it meant people new to PSP hacking. Now kindly, go sit in the corner and keep quiet. ;)

As far as I know, it can’t be done unless of course the file has a simple password and you can just brute it, as you mentioned. Don’t take my word on it, I’m not 100% sure but I seem to remember coming to that conclusion a few months back after searching for a way to crack a rar file.

For people that are saying it doesn’t work on their psps keep trying since it was already mentioned that is can take 20 tries for it to work.

I have tried this with my PSP Slim with the motherboard 88v3, the one that would not boot
from pandora’s battery. I downloaded OFW [5.03] From network update and deleted all images
from the memory stick, I turned the psp back to default and copied over slim.TIFF into M:/PSP/PHOTOS I took
the h.bin and placed it in the M:/ Root of the Mem stick, When you make the psp view the exploited TIFF
Image, it will freeze the screen. No controll, The image will not load but the memory stick indicator will stay l
lit. The psp makes a click sound then all lights and the screen shutdown. The psp fully shuts down, i turn it back
on and it does the sony logo. Thats about as far as I have gotten.

My PSP IS a Slim 2001, 88v3 Motherboard (non-hackable due to Pandora patch) And this exploit works on it!

Just copy over what it says the Slim.TIFF to /PSP/Photo and the h.bin onto M:/ Root of your mem stick.

When you are in the psp menu click on the mem stick Icon underneith images, but! once you do that repeadedly press (circle) so it goes back out fast. This will give your psp a slight pause and bring up the “Hello World

hi sony :D ”

Works everytime when you press X on the memstick and quickly press 0 to cancel it.

This is on the what was thought to be “un-hackable Motherboard”

you can’t do anything, someone has to write a program that would allow downgrading, but they’re not, they’re gonna write a program that will probably give us access to kernel mode, therefore we’ll be able to use pandora on the 3000’s. But this is only a MAYBE. Dont get your hopes up just yet.

Pandora Batteries are fairly cheap. I bought mines for $5 bucks from this pandora something website. There also not some chinese drop deap shipping crap. They ship outta Tampa, Florida and you get your battery in 3 days.
