More PSP2/PSP-4000 Rumours — Coming pre-Christmas?!

greg | April 7, 2009

Worded oh-so elegantly in an article over at Pocket Gamer is more speculation concerning the PSP-4000 or the PSP2.

Allow me to quote Chris James

…Unsurprisingly the console manufacturer has been comparatively mute in both cases, denying the existence of a PSP sequel and any threat from Apple. However, having spoken to an insider source – who’s not Dave Perry, but is a developer working on the new hardware – we can reveal that the new handheld will arrive before Christmas and will be far more similar to the iPhone than the current device.

Like Apple’s newcomer, the PSP 2 will be a compact device with a large touchscreen. However, where Sony’s machine has the edge is when the touchscreen is slid open as it reveals familiar buttons, D-pads and – praise the Lord of Handhelds – dual analogue controls.

This new format should allow for both existing hardcore console titles as well as simpler touchscreen games along the lines of those currently available in the App Store. And like the App Store, (and in the absence of UMD), the games will all be available for digital download via the PlayStation Store.

Although this hasn’t been confirmed, our speculation is that Sony’s initial plans for a small upgrade to a PSP 4000 model have since been accelerated by the success of the iPhone and arrival of Nintendo DSi…

And like I’ve said before — it’s all about E3. Till then, discuss here.

Um, if it helps, I’ve had it on good authority that it’s expected before the end of Sony’s financial year.

All the budgets have been calculated for this time period. So unless there is a sudden acceleration in the development or manufacturing process, expect it between Dec & April next year!

DID ANYONE THINK THAT IF YOU HAVE TO BUY THE GAME OFF THE PLAYSTATION STORE (WHICH COSTS) NO ONE COULD PUT THEM ON THE NET, MEANING THAT WE CAN DOWNLOAD THE GAMES TO PUT THEM ON OUR PSPS AND THAT THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE NEW GAMES WOULD BE TO HACK THE PLAYSTATION STORE OR FIND AWAY TO TAKE THE GAMES OFF A PSP WITH THE BOUGHT GAME ON IT AND PUT THEM ON THE INTERNET!!!

IS THE TIME OF DOWNLOADING PSP GAMES OVER, COZ IF DAX CAN HACK THE PSP-3000, WHAT CHANCE DOSE HE HAVE OF THIS?

No UMD = Fail

When I get done with my games, I like to resell them, and possibly purchase used games. Removal of the physical media option makes me completely lose interest in the device. Well, unless it becomes hackable…

Comment by rob
2009-04-11 16:26:03

this i agree with no external media = failur i would never buy a gaming device that all games were bought digitaly theres no resale and now sony taxes digital purchases i don’t want to be stuck with a game till the day i die just till i get bored with it

Comment by PSPregenesis
2009-04-13 08:45:56

haven’t any of you ever thought that the reason the UMD’s are being removed is how easily they break? UMD’s break too easily so Sony doesn’t want to continue selling them because of their unreliability. I keep my UMD’s in cases until I need them and they still end up broken just because of playing them.

I personally think it would be nice to have a new PSP system out on the market. There are many +’s I see to it such as the basics: larger internal RAM, faster graphic processing, faster CPU, less moving breakable parts (UMD Drive), faster game loading, etc. But for a better PSP there are more expenses: higher system cost, replaceable parts, will probably also cost a bit more.

And for the people worried about pirating games I’m sure someone will come out with a hack where you can use your computer as a server and transfer files to your PSP via wireless. To be honest just go and buy the games. There are a lot of people out there working hard to come out with great games. You wouldn’t want someone stealing your game that you put a lot of time and effort into.

the problem with this is that there are a lack of great games so would we waste money on something that will more then likely suck more than paris hilton at a frat party?

Comment by AppleX
2009-04-10 00:13:36

Ok so if there arn’t that many great games for the PSP then just buy the ones that are great, isn’t that why multiple games are realeased for a consol? Buy what you like and don’t buy what you don’t like.

can someone hook up an internal mic,new psp3000 screen and psp phat IR port all on a psp slim? is that modification possible?

Comment by Tlj

Internal mic: Yes but it would require soldering and a lot of electronics know-how. It would be a very difficult mod.

PSP3000 screen: No

IR Port: No

If you don’t mind my I ask exactly what you do? I too repair video game consols but I never charge anyone (it’s kinda a hobby) I consider it all expierience. Wouldn’t it be easier to sell something newer and more valuable than something older?

Comment by Tlj
2009-04-11 03:38:53

It’s a little more complicated than this but basically I buy broken PSPs for cheap, fix them, and resell them in a working state. I also sell other things but PSPs are a large part of the sales.

The original PSP is easy to work with. It’s a breeze to unbrick and I know how to repair or replace every part in it. I’m fairly good at this kind of thing but by no means am I an expert and God only knows if I’ll be able to repair a completely revamped PSP model so easily. Besides, being a newer system, replacement parts will be more expensive and broken units will be harder to get ahold of.

Comment by AppleX
2009-04-12 15:09:55

Ah ok I understand. Yea I agree replacement parts will be more expensive, but then there’s also the fact that the new PSP’s will have less moving parts so that means that there will be less things to fix unfortunately making business less profitable. You still have cracked screens (touch screens?) and broken analog nubs to look foward to fixing! lol

Yea I was kinda wondering about that, it seems as though Sony thinks that everyone has easy access to wireless internet.

Comment by PSPregenesis
2009-04-13 08:50:24

I think that this is because almost everywhere you go nowadays you have some access to wi-fi. whether it be through school, your house, or even a McDonalds you can access it pretty much anywhere so Sony’s just figuring that it’s easier than going out to a store and buying the games
