Rumour: Developer Backs PSP-4000 Speculation
greg | March 2, 2009
More PSP-4000 speculation stemming from Eurogamer –
The next iteration of Sony’s PSP handheld will feature a sliding screen, will no longer carry a UMD drive and will allow shoulder button-only games to be played when the screen is in its ‘closed’ position.
That’s according to a development source close to Sony, speaking to Eurogamer on condition of anonymity. We first broke the news of a new update to the system late last year, revealing that PSP-4000, the third incremental hardware revision of the console, is planned for release later this year.
Yup, you read it… Now read the rest via the source link. And again, stay tuned for GDC and/or E3 this year; they’re bound to straighten things out.

hmmm interesting
bye bye UMDs
so umm…. how the hell your suppose to play games? buy them on play station store an put it in? that’s a hassle.
well they could sell them on memory sticks and buying stuff off the playstation store is not really a hastle plus it saves the information on stuff bought there so you can redownload whenever.
I dun know about that but i think for backward compatibility, Sony could have an external umd reader as one of their sold separately accessory.
I smell another case of sony copying off hackers..
They are probably gonna release the games in some type of ISO format with a strong DRM encryption
iTunes doesn’t seem to be having that problem.
you might notice iTunes is compatible with non-protected mp3
how do you play your old games on it and what will be the new type of media format for games
Who says you can play old games on it? Why step backwards? People always assume you must have backwards compatibility.
Xbox 360 no longer supports that feature and they are doing just fine.
Digital media is the future. It’s more of an hassle to have hard copies of stuff. Sure it can lead to piracy, but more people will buy than pirate.
it still has that feature. it just doesnt update it any more
maybe they will make it able to play ISOs! might as well
sorry, but i wouldn’t believe even a single feature from that list. really?
Well… While it does sound a bit far off… I’d say that the removal of the UMD drive is easily the most reliable bit of information there. It’s really the only thing that’s keeping the PSP as big as it is. They’ll probably come up with some nice encrypted format for their new games lol. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I still don’t like sliding screens. :-/
I wonder if they intend to drop compatibility with older games, provide an external disc drive to import them, or just charge again to download them. Being who they are, I’m betting the latter.
well if they’re making a new psp with no umd then there will be new games i think…
Lets think on the logical side here guys, if sony remores the UMD what format are they going to sell games, digital? No, not sony, that would make piracy about 3 times as easy, and what about all those UMD’s people still have and the one’s still out on the market? They become trash? That’s a waste of money and in today’s economy nobody n ot even sony will waste money.
I call bullshit on this one too, but I can see the slide screen happening but not this soon.
uuuuh
cartridges?
Haha, yeah maybe.
selling the memory sticks? like say a game is 500mb, they put the game on a 512mb READ ONLY memory stick, but yea there again its easy to copy them and put them on a RW memory stick
be sure they will make some changes on the mem sticks. like adding a new special detail that makes only the psp be able to read it.
I am sure they are working on advanced encryption.
Also people who still have UMDs should buy a PSP-3000.
I don’t understand why people want backwards compatibility. Things ALWAYS work better on the original system. PS3 stretches out PS2 games, and so does Xbox 360, so why do you want to play last gen games on a new gen console?
You really have to stop living in the past. It’s a new system, its made for new games, so Sony does NOT have to make it play old games. They dumped that with the PS3 so what makes you think they will with the PSP-4000? Its a waste of time, just go buy a PSP-1,2,or 3000 series. There are enough of them to be around for a long time.
You wouldn’t buy a Wii to play Gamecube games, not if you want them the way they were meant to be. Backwards compatibility is stupid imo. I love having lots of consoles.
no umds= complete piracy
an selling us all out includin thes ones with 3000, 1000 versions
forget 4000 bring out psp2
this ones gonna be hard to hack, but in a way i think this is fake coz of its size, where dose the battery go, its gotta be mega small then and they would have phased out the umd drive in the 3000 if they were gonna do this coz it wouldnt be fair on the people with psp 3000s
Pssst. It’s a concept graphic, not what they’re actually claiming it’s going to look like.
UMD drive sucks up too much battery juice. It has to go! Using memory stick pro’s will cost Sony nothing in development. They’ll probably use the money they save, on better encryption.
I think IF they’re really going digital ala itunes and/or steam. They would embed some protection in it like DRM or something new. Who knows, sony like to do these kinds of things.
AS a couple have said what will happen to the existing umd we own i have about 13 they cost tonnes and im not gunna buy a game i already own in digital.
If sony goes the download root what about the peeps that dont have unlimmited or bad connections to the internet.
i wish people stop pushing for a new psp its just crap sony has just come out with psp-3000 and its not even a year old for them too be pushing a 4000 on people.Frist i think sony needs too take a class on how too make a handheld. put a poll up on there site asking people what they would like too have on a new psp and at what price it should be sold at.
Hey people out there,.,.,
I think that when sony remove the UMD drive it wouldn’t be easy to hack and make a CFW out of it, and 1 thing is for sure the format of the games that they will release may not be in .iso, .cso…,., so it would be hard enough to convert it to .iso and .cso format,.,(huhu badluck!)
Also the firmware of this “psp-4000″ may be unusual than the old PSP… that is my conclusion…
nope wont be possible for CFW, can’t do for PSP3000 yet, so what chances would we have for another that most likely uses same techniques…
it’d be cool as a touch screen
slide screen cell phone TYPE wifi card so you could get on the internet and better flash to play youtube stuff.
so many possibilities
My guess is accelerometer control for the games that use just sholder buttons. Games like loco roco, mercury, and that type.
If it has a sliding screen, then it better have a QWERTY keypad because it’ll be useless to not offer it.
What other options will the sliding screen offer?
Since the release of the 2/3000 series, will all the accessories be compatible with the 4k or will people need to purchase additional items in order to achieve maximum usage?
The removal of UMD has its pro’s and con’s, however, that is the least of our worries. It is obvious that running off the memory stick will offer greater games for the PSP with more options especially with the limitations of the UMD disc so that is a huge PRO. The CON definitely comes from the UMD titles not being supported however, they will probably offer some kind of accessory to support our need in that regard.
yeah maybe they will make a small umd drive that plugs into the psp and allow you to use existing umd’s
but then that would make copying tonnes easier hmmm i dunno
About the backwards compatibility with the PS3. They actually announced to restart the work on an emulator for PS2 games.
Allot of gamers still want to play those games and they are sitll being made aswell. And it is to stop the hassle of ending up with 20 consoles in your living room.
Like myself I still have allot of consoles cause of this. I like most old games better then what they bring out these days. There is hardly any story. The part that is story well they couldnt make the graphics any better or their hardware would fail. So let’s fill that small bit up with story.
Sure there are some games that are good for new consoles. But most I can finish within 5 hours.
Hey all, if you already have UMDs you likely already own a PSP so why are you whining? Just don’t buy the new one. And if you want the new one, but have an old one, whats the matter? Use your old one for your UMD games, and hey, it can also play the digital games too!! WOW!! If you don’t own a PSP Sony’s likely to release a lot of the “good” games digitally via the PlayStation Network, and therefore aren’t missing much anyway. Holy Shit! And if you don’t have the internet, you are most likely not in the market to buy a PSP in the first place. The money you save on buying a game digitally would make up for the added cost of faster internet. Hell, they mave have download stations at Wall-Mart even!! Or use your closest Starbucks’ wifi. Jesus!!
Like I said in my comment before. People don’t tend to keep 20 consoles/handhelds to play all their old games.
Secondly about the internet. There are still allot of countries that have limited speeds and limits on how much you are allowed to download in one month. Also the fun idea of using wall-mart may work for people that have one nearby. But still not every place has stores that offer internet for the customers and I don’t see sony investing in that either.
Third if you think people will safe allot of money for buying games digitally you are wrong we hardly pay for the book, the case and the UMD. The thing we mainly pay for is still the game.
So no LazyEye your statements are as untought and unresearched as possible. And you also didn’t take much trouble to check other replies about the internet problems.
(PS. I aint one with internet problems)
and, like I said, “you don’t need to buy this new revision” I wasn’t saying my ideas where the ultimate solution, I’m just trying to offer alternate ideas. Why are you guys worried about them anyway? If they fuck up (and that’s only saying this rumor is legit) then watch them as they burn.
Like I said there are still new games that have good stories and people don’t want to keep 20 consoles/handhelds in their home.
And course we are talking if it is legit. But that doesnt alter the fact much that people do want backwards compatibility. Unless your a graphic only lover offcourse
haha.. what a bummer.. you guys always keep on complainin.. no matter what we say.. sony wont listen..
[oh! what the hell am i sayin.. might as well say sumthin..]
Unknown is right.. some older games are better than new ones.. they may not be digitally advanced but they have story.. most of the games nowadays are only for show.. some doesn’t have an interesting story.. even i play PSX games on my PSP.. cuz of the story.. so people always ask for backward compatibility..
cuz some gamers still prefer older games than new ones..
[P.S.:i also don't have internet issues.. hell i have my own wi-fi here at my house.. ]
oh my god people!! you don’t have to buy the new PSP to play the new “non-UMD” games. Stick it to the god-damned man and DONT buy the new psp if you’re so concerned about backwards compatibility. I never said I was abandoning backwards compatibility, you don’t need to buy 20 new handhelds if the ‘old’ one you currently have can play the ‘new’ games
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
