Rumour: More PSP2 Speculation — No UMD Drive

More PSP2 rumours continue circulating the scene… This time ’round we have David Perry, founder of Shiny Entertainment and respected industry veteran, who has chirped the following via Twitter:
“I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they’ve removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I’m excited!”
And just because, another PSP2 concept design to go with it…
Whatever the case — the PSP2 and/or PSP-4000 — we’ll likely have something solid at GDC (in March) or E3 (in June) this year. Stay tuned.

And now for the PSP2. I’m not getting rid of my trusty and beaten as fuck phat PSP, but then again, I don’t think anyone will. If Sony is smart (it’s not), they’ll try to capitalize on the PSP’s selling points. The big screen, the increased power, and, god forbid, the emulators are all things that made me choose the PSP instead of the DS. Those concepts, if real, mean that Sony’s being naive and thinking that they can make the PSP2 sell by imitating the NDS gimmick. Why does it sell? Because of the touch screen? Because of the two screens? Because it folds and it’s small? Or is it because of the wide variety of games, hassle-free access to homebrews and piracy, and generally lower price?
This is NOT a PSP2 concept design. It was a concept design for a hard mod actually done by someone to a fat PSP.

i DONT care if the psp looks like the old ones, i just want the following features built into it:
Bluetooth
camera
inbuilt hard drive (8gb + is good)
gps
(maybe a sim card slot so you can use to call people)
THAT WOULD BE THE BEST EVER IN THE WORLD!!!
A camera add on is just fine. Not everyone wants to pay extra for a camera. More built in hardware means more on the final cost.
Holding a current model PSP to your ear to make phone calls would be a bit akward. Sure you can use Skype phone, but they aren’t always reliable.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not know of one single phone in the US that is sold without a carrier.
The built in HDD would be nice though. So would bluetooth. Would be nice to have bluetooth ad hoc file transfers.
Also lets step up to Wireless N. I don’t know why these PC companies are still throwing in last generation wireless devices.
IMHO it’s time for hardware developers to step up to the plate and give us something to wow us. Show mankind what it is capable of. I am tired of Mediocre gaming systems while PC users get all the fun.

Sony already said earlier they want to step away from UMD since it doesn’t profit and they want to focus on downloadable games, so it’s not stupid at all to believe they will finally remove the UMD tray.

UMD’s are the PSP’s lifeblood without them it’s just a console that can browse the web and listen to music (for those of us without homebrew that is..) This design makes absolutely no sense.

Have you people forgotten Mini DVD? Sony uses it in thier camcorders. A redesign of the PSP and viola.
Although it’s a PSP it is not written anywhere that it has to play previous generation games.
And STOP saying PSP-2, it’s not a PSP-2. PSP-2 = PSP-2000.
obviously there is a rail or something like that going along the back so the buttons could slide out. that would add strength to the screen so it wouldn’t break. but it’s a concept anyway so it doesn’t matter. also the psp 2 may have no umd drive, but that doesn’t mean the 4000 won’t. maybe for the psp 2 they will put whole games on a memory stick kinda like what a ds has because those don’t take up a lot of room in the system. can’t wait to see what’s really coming out and what it really looks like.
they wouldnt make a psp-2 becuase there is no point of that like psp 2000 is like the second series and 3000 the 3rd series so they would only make a psp-4000 model which no one would be able to hackk and thats the point of the 3000 and yes the psp-4000 will look the same off course because ecveryone like the design idea of the 1000-3000 and they would only improve the 4000 by things that the 3000 failed in ……

It would be badass to release an unfinished system? Just like they did with PS3. You have to fine tune, squash any bugs, etc.
The image shows a touch screen. Sony has stated they’re not doing that. (Which is a shame…)

I think its just a rumor about a PSP2 but there may be a PSP-4000 possibly,and that is a ugly concept design.

The previous concept was just slightly ugly, but this one is just flat out crappy.
That looks really cool. I hope to see a good PSP2 or PSP-4000. Maybe if they do what they always do and screw it up, which they are pretty much known for now, they might make it hackable easily with a nice exploit. There is ALWAYS an exploit to everything, as all the stuff is open-source basically to all the good people like Dark_Alex. Dax or Noobz will pretty much always find an exploit to everything.
I only want to see another analog nub, a faster processor, and more memory. Nice things would be the use of more memory sticks, a touch screen, (would bump up the price a whole hell load though) and maybe like a program for homebrew developers to make “legal” applications. It’s still legal to do what we do, but to Sony, it’s not right. They should allow it to be right in some form, so we won’t hack their systems, steal their games, and make them lose money.
PSP is not a screw up. It has been the obsession of this website for years now. Sure they make mistakes, but they must be doing something right. PSP sales are off the charts at times.
Sony should learn a few things from Apple. Make games downloadable. The App store is doing wonderful. Now while there are still pirates, the ratio of people who legally download to who illegally download is say 10:1. Also, apple may be releasing a dual core iPhone.
Come on. Why can’t Sony make such technology?

That thing is like 6″ x 6″ at max. Only uses 18W of power, and has a built in GeForce 9400. Sure it’s no GTX 295 or HD 4870 X2. But thats really good for that size.
I’m tired of playing a handheld that is nothing but a Portable Playstation 1. It’s time for some ground breaking graphics. Direct X 10 capable games on a handheld, now thats 2009 for you. I want a handheld that could play Call of Duty 5: WaW, browse the internet and ALL of it’s content, and watch 1080p videos.
I hope Sony steps up to the plate. We need a PSP or other handheld equivalent to a PS3. Maybe not the raw power, but definitely the graphics. IMO if that means making it larger, count me in, as long as it’s not the size of a game gear or Lynx.

To those who say Oh no UMD or those who say YES UMD and those who say cant play ps1 games without a umd. WELL its called an EMULATOR =\? I’m pretty sure someone like Dark_Alex would come out to fix this issue or ANYONE ELSE that does homebrews.
Personally i like the one in the last post the other concept that was like a FLIP UP screen with 2 analogs. I loved that one Yes it make brake too but so far to me its better than this concept.
Guys remember the days where you dint know about CTF and you dint know you could play PS1 games and such? Remember about the times you said PLAY NINTENDO on my PSP impossible COME ON…. People said it was impossible and once again we manage to make it work right?

I really don’t want a touch screen… The psp should keep its basic design and meybe sony could add dualshock or tilt sensors like six-axis instead of a touchscreen. I do hope they keep UMDs though.
Also I think sony should stic with the basc uprades they’ve always done. Keep the same controller design(so the psp shouldn’t change at all) Add a few features like rumble and motion sensing(touch wouldn’t work with the xmb), backwards compatibility, increase ram nd processing power to allow way more powerfull games, in between ps2 and ps3 graphics(the psp was in between ps1 and ps2 graphics) add ps2 emulation after a firmware update, add a new sort of umd with a better laser so more data can be put on the disc, a hard drive for install data, and two ms slots while keeping the general design. A good concept design would be to give the psp the same backing as the phat PSPs.
I have to disagree. Touch would work really well with the XMB. Especially if the PSP-4000 had a larger screen.
They can use the one the iPhone has which is only reactive to your skin.
They can make the touch screen for browsing and the XMB, and then simply deactivate it when in games. Perhaps it would come in use for some games. Like a Rockband for PSP similar to TapTap on iPhone/iPod Touch.
Touch screen capability is becoming the new standard soon. So don’t laugh if it’s implemented into the PSP-4000 or 5000.
No UMDs. Go with cartridges or Mini DVD. I don’t want lame graphics. I want high resolution gorgeous eye drooling graphics.
A tilt sensor like they stole from the WII? I always turn that off because its stupid. I dont want to swing a controller around nor do i want to tilt it.
Also, if they made it possible to transfer legit games from umd to the rumored ‘hard drive’ inside the rumored ‘psp2′ that would be great. Just use the PS3 to verify its a umd and not a iso and your golden.

What about the Xbox pinching Ps2’s dual Shock?
There is no controller on Xbox called the Dual Shock. Just because they have a controller with dual analog sticks and vibration does not make it the same. If that is the case, look at the hundreds of PS2 clone controllers for the PC Market.
If they do not patent the idea, then it is open market.

did you know that the wiimote idea was for the game cube, google it and have a look at some of the designs, but as everyone knows it was canceled and put in the wii.

Six Axis would have to be very sensitive, because if it required half the movements that the joystick needed then you would not be able to follow the action on the screen if it is pointed away from you.
I do agree. They could learn somethings from Acid Mods. Dual Analog Nubs, Vibration are just some of the things they should add. Also custom interchangeable cases like the Sidekick 2008.

Funny. They should step up with higher capacity batteries. However, all these extras cost more in the end, so if you want this ultra handheld, be prepared to pay top dollar for it.
