Rumour: PSP-4000 “A Complete Aesthetic Overhaul”

greg | February 23, 2009

First and foremost — don’t get too excited, I’d take this bit of news with some skepticism spread on top, but that’s just me…

Anyway, according to VG247 and their “highly-trusted sources”, Sony plans to revamp and redesign their PlayStation hand held once again… No, it’s not the PSP2 — it’s the PSP-4000 series. And to back things up, Eurogamer also made mention of the PSP-4000 in mid December.

Could this be it?

PSP Design Concept

No, probably not… Longtime readers may recall this user created concept design actually surfaced around the same date last year. Now, I’m not saying this invalidates their claim or anything like that; however, it’s a safe bet the PSP-4000, if there is one, won’t resemble what you see above.

Allow me to quote VG247 –

PSP-4000 is not PSP2, but rather a “complete aesthetic overhaul” based on existing PSP tech.

Much is now known by some parties of the console, which will be announced at either GDC or E3 this year, but cards are currently being clutched very tightly to chests.

The revamp does have a sliding front-screen, and we’re assured the design being currently touted isn’t a million miles away from this now-infamous image.

Eurogamer rumoured PSP-4000 for a 2009 release in December last year, and our source confirmed this to be the case today.

Guess we’ll find out sooner or later… Discuss amongst yourselves.

I hope it can be too, and I think the screen should turn so you can face it towards the buttons so it doesn’t get scratched as much.
Everyone knows what a scratched PSP screen looks like lol

They should add 20 sets of sholder buttons for psx games as the would be much easier to use and maybe shock for psx aswell and new umd’s

I just noticed, the design has no L or R trigger, so you can tell that design is fake.

There are 2 shoulder buttons higher up on the sides. Hopefully the final product has a better design, because I imagine that the pictured design would be unwieldy.

Sadly though, it will not be released as the Picture shows, for one good reason, it has twin analogue nubs, now that would be unfair to all the previous PSP versions, and so far, all games only need one analogue nub, so its not needed!!!
but when PSP2 is released then yes, that will have everything that we desire on a portable console, including 2 Nubs. come on Sony, stop teasing us and release the PSP2.

that fake one doesn’t look that bad. it would be a lot better if it was a little wider with the buttons on the sides(like a normal psp). it would also be gnarley if it was a touch screen.

And where do the UMDs go?
Someone put alot of time into doing that picture but if they are going to do that they should get it right, like adding the L and R triggers.

The person who created this picture totally wasted their time (and i wonder why there is a 2nd nub this looks like a PS2P without shoulder buttons)

Yeah the Shoulder buttons are on the side of it above the Memory Stick Slot

Looks easily breakable and scratchable. One drop on the floor and it’s all over.

I’d much rather have a design like the GBA SP, but wider. Folding handhelds are nice because they’re so much more durable.

This would be too good to be true, I love the design but its a little bit too futuristic, Sony is too conservative to bring something to the market like this, if it was Apple …

That design sucks. I really like the current design, maybe they may change it a bit for r2 and l2 shoulder buttons and another analogue stick, but apart from that all i really want is rumble. (Also think about how much psp 2 would cost, the psp had graphics comparable to ps2 games(somewhere between ps1 and ps2 graphics) and it cost more than the actuall ps2 and it could emulate ps1 games, so i hink sony Are working on power-efficient software and a way to emulate ps2 games (I read an articl that sony hired someone in japan to sort out emulation issues on one of there consoles…) Also, the psp 2 will need to have discs with larger storage space, so I think sony might make Blu-Ray UMD or something and they are waiting for the price of diods and disc production to go down. Anyway this is just a theory and any design which is close to that is going to make me puke if sony make it.

The PSP2,Its not going to have the Useless UMD drive, i shouldn’t be surprised if it went down the Ipod storage way, with a mini hard drive of at least 16 Gig,or if not, with at least 16 Gig memory stick built in with a lot more internal Ram also, i do hope so, and last of all, twice as powerful, so as you said to emulate PS2 games, and the only way, you can buy games for it, is on the PS Network Online, or in the games shops by way of a wireless connection to a machine in store, to stamp out piracy on this new machine.
What do other people think?

Just my personal PSP-400 Wish List:

1.) OLED screen, saves a lot of space for other hardware, wide screen, HD of course. (This is a costly option however)

2.) Bigger, not as big as a Game Gear, but a bit larger.

3.) NO UMDS, Mini DVDs are just fine. Perhaps even Mini Blu-Ray, lol. Even cartridges, we have astonishing high density flash drives, so a cartridge today could hold ALOT!

4.) HDD add on. Like the HP Media Drive Bays. Just a little HDD add on that could pop in the bottom or something and become permanent. Like the Xbox 360s.

5.) Ask Apple what speakers they are using in the iPhone 3G. Sony no longer has a good audio department.

6.) Built in Wireless-N.

7.) Domestic and WIDELY AVAILABLE Camera and GPS add-ons. Don’t make them standard as everyone doesn’t want those options.

8.) Step up the graphics. It’s 2009 for crying out loud. NVidia has an entire chipset that could FIT IN YOUR HAND; it can play Call of Duty 4, and run Windows Vista Home Premium; yet we have these huge server sized consoles sitting in our houses. Lets see a handheld with Xbox 360 graphics. I would pay $300 to $400 for a handheld with that capability.

9.) Revamped Operating System. IMHO, XMB is getting tiring, but Sony loves the heck out of it.

10.) Open source would be a dream come true, so I’ll just keep dreaming on that one, lol.

Hope I didn’t miss anything.

Even though they found a exploit for PSP-3000, they did not released it yet for fear Sony patches the loophole of the PSP-3000. So for those people out there with the PSP-3000, they have not been able to play any iso games using the CFW. They are been forced to purchase UMD games for the sake of playing games that they like. I believe it’s not that easy to find another exploit for the PSP-3000 anymore. There’s a better chance that they’ll hack PSP-2000 ta-088 v3 motherboard further so that it can be flash with m33.

2009-02-24 18:59:27

sony already patched that up

Comment by psp_gamer
2009-02-24 19:10:32

Therefore they tell all the PSP users out there to be patient and wait for another exploit to be found and hacked before they released the CFW content for the PSP-3000 users to download and install. Conclusion: No ISO games for them, continue using OFW to play original UMD games.
