The IdolM@ster SP: Comes with Firmware 5.05; Unplayable on Custom Firmwares

greg | February 18, 2009

Update: I can personally confirm “The IdolM@ster SP” does not boot on custom firmware 5.00 M33. It errors out with the following, “The game could not be started. (80020148).”

Furthermore, after doing a little research, it’s rumoured The Idolmaster SP will feature unlockable “PlayStation Home Rewards.” It’s likely 5.05 may accommodate that.

Idolmaster SP Box Art Uh oh… Apparently this new PSP title, The Idolmaster SP, comes bundled with PSP firmware version 5.05, and not only that, you absolutely need 5.05 to run it. It’s been reported, even with spoofing your firmware version, that for the moment Idolmaster SP does not work on any custom firmwares. So that begs the question: what’s up with firmware 5.05?

To quote Mr. Anonymous –

The series of THE iDOLM@STER SP games (japanese), released today but leaked earlier, comes with a new and neat 5.05 update that is pretty much required for the game to run, or, at least, does not work on any existing CFW at the time. Spoofing the version through version.txt seemingly doesn’t work, either.

You consider Need for Speed Undercover for the PSP “decent”? That game is trash compared to the other racing games on the handheld. By far, Midnight Club: LA Remix is the best racing game for it.

This is a little startling for people who want to play games off of UMDs, but couldn’t you just dump the ISO & rip the update?

Either way a M33 update or new prx should clear this problem up, unless it’s more serious than it implies…

I wuz surprised how quickly the PSN Store got ‘hacked’ so unless $ony actually decides to buckle down on us brewers, I doubt this is anything to worry about.

Its interesting seeing what Sony is trying to do to prevent hacking PSPs. But I don’t think this would be that hard to get around… but idk, I’m not a hacker.

Comment by neverletthem

Nope, not trophies. If you have a PS3, playing through the game unlocks items that can be used in PlayStation Home. If you don’t own a PS3, then it’s useless.

I just mean that they had to do something to block this iso because in my experience isos don’t require you to update (e.g. I could play god of war II on my 3.40-oe-a psp which came with 3.80 update) but maybe this is just a special example

It seems like sony is always a step ahead of dax. They made it so hard for anyone to hack the 3000.(still not hacked yet) and the only ones who are getting any kind of cfw updates are the 1000 and some 2000 version psp owners.

They need to make a DCV8v2 with M33-6. You could just update from this UMD and go back with DCV8… No?

Comment by Low
2009-02-18 21:26:46

LOL i was just thinkin the same thing…except why come out with another dcv8 when you can use DCV8 original and do the m33 update through wifi

I wonder if it’s just checking for the existence of version.txt? :P Although more likely it checks for some things that spoofing misses (variables in memory), or the existence of unsigned plugins, files that belong to CFW, etc.

Either way, I can see this being cracked within a day or so, if anyone even cares. Then all the homebrew users who bought the game will still have to get a cracked version. It always ends that way. Why do companies keep forgetting that?

Comment by HyperHacker
2009-02-18 21:12:04

Actually, didn’t think that one all the way through… probably most likely is just a new API call in 5.05 that it’s trying to use. Failing when it can’t find that function might not even be intended to block CFW, just lazy coding…

maybe the area in flash where your version number is stored is in a different place or under a different name in 5.05 so even if you spoof your firmware because the game looks in this new location you cannot spoof it to boot the game.. Just an idea

I don’t know much about the hacking of the firmware…but it looks like Sony has a few tricks up their sleeves…which this possibly is what all future games are going to do.

I am confident in DAX and the GEN group, that they too will have a few tricks up their sleeves as well. (they always do.)

My thoughts are, the games might be actually looking at the prx modules themselves, and comparing based upon a checksum….just an idea.

First of all, what’s this “us”? What exactly have you done as far as custom firmware goes?

Second, that whole “they can never stop us!!!” mentality is foolish. Sony, Microsoft, etc. have millions of dollars to spend and hundreds, perhaps thousands of employees to work on security. The custom firmware community has a small handful of hackers. What makes you so sure they won’t eventually come up with methods of security so complex that it would take an impractical amount of time and resources for a small number of hackers to crack?

You guys are fucking retarded for bashing Sony so much. Without Sony, you wouldn’t have had the opportunity to hack your PSP.

Sony could have stopped the PSP platform because of hackers, but they didn’t. They keep making games even though the bootlegging continually takes a chunk out of profits.

Why can’t you guys be hackers with a conscience? Get the game then buy it if it’s awesome. That’s what I do.

So people like this ‘killerener99′ here can go fuck themselves. Try working those brains cells a little to realize Sony is helping you steal, you fucking moron.

Most games suck because developers don’t want to make games just to watch them end up on the internet for free with little or no return on the development/ creation of the game = no revenue. That’s why games suck. Who wants to make a game and get very little or no profit or revenue from it? No one.

*lol* so many ppl complain because they cannot download/copy/”steal” games with the new firmware …. why don’t you complain that you cannot get “free” money from any ATM ???

You’re retards and as smart as a bathtub plug!

Comment by HyperHacker
2009-03-03 01:35:09

The complaint here is that people have *bought* the game, and their *legitimate* copy refuses to work because of CFW. Sure, probably most of them want to copy it (because who wants to lug a bunch of discs around and have the drive draining their battery?), but that doesn’t change the fact that the product they paid for doesn’t work. It’s like mocking someone who complains that the ATM didn’t give them anything after debiting their account.

Comment by tuddy

If there’s any copy protection on this game, it’s probably because the developers are butthurt. Apparently, nobody outside of Japan can “appreciate” IdolM@ster SP (or pretty much any NamcoBandai title not released in the US), according to NBGI’s president. So, they use this to justify putting region locks, or some other ridiculous form of protection, on every single one of their games. Then again, this’ll probably get patched eventually, or it’ll “just work” on a later CFW revision.

Also- every person calling a game they’ve never even played “Bad” or “Crap” is a gigantic retard. It’s a manager sim where you manage a J-Pop Idol group. just because that concept makes your brains hurt (it’s too “Japanese” for most American audiences, apparently, and after reading these comments I agree), that doesn’t mean it’s bad. It just means you’re stupid and cannot appreciate the gaming tastes of other people and cultures.

I know -this- game doesn’t have region protection, but Namco’s other IM@S games do, so this is the first IM@S game I’ve played (got fed up of waiting, so I imported this and “borrowed” an OFW PSP from my brother). It’s pretty fun, but not for everyone.
