The IdolM@ster SP: Comes with Firmware 5.05; Unplayable on Custom Firmwares
greg | February 18, 2009
Update: I can personally confirm “The IdolM@ster SP” does not boot on custom firmware 5.00 M33. It errors out with the following, “The game could not be started. (80020148).”
Furthermore, after doing a little research, it’s rumoured The Idolmaster SP will feature unlockable “PlayStation Home Rewards.” It’s likely 5.05 may accommodate that.
Uh oh… Apparently this new PSP title, The Idolmaster SP, comes bundled with PSP firmware version 5.05, and not only that, you absolutely need 5.05 to run it. It’s been reported, even with spoofing your firmware version, that for the moment Idolmaster SP does not work on any custom firmwares. So that begs the question: what’s up with firmware 5.05?
To quote Mr. Anonymous –
The series of THE iDOLM@STER SP games (japanese), released today but leaked earlier, comes with a new and neat 5.05 update that is pretty much required for the game to run, or, at least, does not work on any existing CFW at the time. Spoofing the version through version.txt seemingly doesn’t work, either.

Maybe it just doesnt work at all:P
does it matter. I haven’t seen a good psp game in a while. i’m still here playing nfs undercover(decent) and socom
You consider Need for Speed Undercover for the PSP “decent”? That game is trash compared to the other racing games on the handheld. By far, Midnight Club: LA Remix is the best racing game for it.
dude i hope they don’t start putting the updates in the games and take the wlan updates off :O
they already put the updates in the game
this is nothing new
we just have to wait until the next M33 or OE comes out
and even if they did DAX would just put the updater back in
Oh Shit!
I don’t like the sound of this 0_0
Oh well it’ll be a matter of time before DAX figures it out (i have a feeling the psn store thing might happen again)
why is this a shitty game? it’s absolutely marvelous, best psp game ever.
I thought it would suck. Maybe it still does; I can’t play it. But after reading about it, it might be ok.
This is a little startling for people who want to play games off of UMDs, but couldn’t you just dump the ISO & rip the update?
Either way a M33 update or new prx should clear this problem up, unless it’s more serious than it implies…
I wuz surprised how quickly the PSN Store got ‘hacked’ so unless $ony actually decides to buckle down on us brewers, I doubt this is anything to worry about.
who would want to play this horrible game?
Its interesting seeing what Sony is trying to do to prevent hacking PSPs. But I don’t think this would be that hard to get around… but idk, I’m not a hacker.
Yea, what a shitty game, what are these playstation home rewards? are they like trophies?
Nope, not trophies. If you have a PS3, playing through the game unlocks items that can be used in PlayStation Home. If you don’t own a PS3, then it’s useless.
yea i have a ps3 80gb and i use playstation home so lol
that seems like a waste of time for psp developers dark alex will soon enough come out with 5.05-m33
nah someone will just make a prx or update M33 & *cough* Gen *cough* to do a super spoof in case i don’t even know what the game is…
I just mean that they had to do something to block this iso because in my experience isos don’t require you to update (e.g. I could play god of war II on my 3.40-oe-a psp which came with 3.80 update) but maybe this is just a special example
It seems like sony is always a step ahead of dax. They made it so hard for anyone to hack the 3000.(still not hacked yet) and the only ones who are getting any kind of cfw updates are the 1000 and some 2000 version psp owners.
A certain PSP-2000 still isn’t hacked yet i beleive it’s the TA-88v3 MB…
3000s are updatable, its just a matter of fact if you want to lose the gripshift exploit or not
They need to make a DCV8v2 with M33-6. You could just update from this UMD and go back with DCV8… No?
LOL i was just thinkin the same thing…except why come out with another dcv8 when you can use DCV8 original and do the m33 update through wifi
I wonder if it’s just checking for the existence of version.txt? :P Although more likely it checks for some things that spoofing misses (variables in memory), or the existence of unsigned plugins, files that belong to CFW, etc.
Either way, I can see this being cracked within a day or so, if anyone even cares. Then all the homebrew users who bought the game will still have to get a cracked version. It always ends that way. Why do companies keep forgetting that?
Actually, didn’t think that one all the way through… probably most likely is just a new API call in 5.05 that it’s trying to use. Failing when it can’t find that function might not even be intended to block CFW, just lazy coding…
That could be it lol
even knowing this game probably sucks now knowing its harder to get it working i want to play it o.O
wtf this game aint shitty its the best dancing game in japan. youd only know if you were japanese like i am!! mwahhahah white ppl wish they were jap like me so they can enjoy the anime culture
go play your nfs underground and dont play our kingdom hearts psp when it comes out. dare mock our races likes and dislikes
Ahahahahahahahaha.
You’ve never left America, have you?
kingdom hearts rock
fuck u
maybe the area in flash where your version number is stored is in a different place or under a different name in 5.05 so even if you spoof your firmware because the game looks in this new location you cannot spoof it to boot the game.. Just an idea
easy workaround, if you want to play the game, update the firmware, then use a pandora to go back…bada climp bada clamp
you know something it is no big news that play station is trying to protect their software but we will always beat them.
We? like you have contributed to the community at all
Oh god. I hope they don’t do this in the soon-to-be-released MLB 09: The Show.
I will cry.
I’m sure they’ll do this with most if not all new games, if it’s an intentional lockout. And I’m sure 5.05m33 will fix it.
Anyone know if the kernel exploit in the PSPGEN 3000 HEN vid works with 5.05 or not? And no I don’t mean the Gripshift exploit, we all know that was fixed in 5.03.
BTW, I know I’m beating a dead horse, but it’s a valid question.
I don’t know much about the hacking of the firmware…but it looks like Sony has a few tricks up their sleeves…which this possibly is what all future games are going to do.
I am confident in DAX and the GEN group, that they too will have a few tricks up their sleeves as well. (they always do.)
My thoughts are, the games might be actually looking at the prx modules themselves, and comparing based upon a checksum….just an idea.
Good Thing That Game Looks Like A SHITLOAD OF FUCK Anyways.
Yeah, Id rather have a buffalo take a diarrhea dump in my ear, Id rather eat the rotten asshole of a roadkill skunk, Id rather puke diarrhea up my dick. Just some quotes from The Angry Video Game Nerd.
You can’t go wrong with AVGN lol.
HAHAHA so their starting off with a little JAP game to test out their new anti-piracy software. Don’t be surprised when and if they make new good games that they’ll put this in their games to stop the piracy lol
ooooo well
it can never be stopped only haltered
welll im jus glad that sonys not gay like microsoft destroying systems by banning them haha i hate ms so much for that so homo
Here we go again. Another OFW update battle against CFW. LOL. And yeah, it can never be stop. The CFW and the homebrew scene can never be stop. They ($ony) can slow us down, but it’ll never be stop. No, never. *evil laugh*
Great find and great news information by the way.
First of all, what’s this “us”? What exactly have you done as far as custom firmware goes?
Second, that whole “they can never stop us!!!” mentality is foolish. Sony, Microsoft, etc. have millions of dollars to spend and hundreds, perhaps thousands of employees to work on security. The custom firmware community has a small handful of hackers. What makes you so sure they won’t eventually come up with methods of security so complex that it would take an impractical amount of time and resources for a small number of hackers to crack?
why is every one bashing on Sony?
SONY DID NOT MAKE THAT GAME!!!
if you bitches wanna play the blame game, blame the developers WHO ACTUALLY MADE THIS GAME!! fuck!! tired of retarded people these days.
sony still sucks… and deserves to be bashed
Sony doesn’t suck. Sony produced PSP :P. Yuu sucks cos yuu don’t know whatcha thinking.
I’m sorry but what exactly is the brilliant assertion that “sony sucks” based on?
Umm that game has a firmware update that is REQUIRED to run that game. That firmware update was made by SONY…
Logic is not one of your strong points…
Hmmm… not that I give a jolly green fuck about this game but, I assume some one will release a crack for the iso if dax doesn’t bust it with an update (No doubt that he will). FUCK YOU SONY for trying to make me pay for things!
ohh and btw “again”… you just got owned… quite funny indeed.
‘again’ is half right.
You guys are fucking retarded for bashing Sony so much. Without Sony, you wouldn’t have had the opportunity to hack your PSP.
Sony could have stopped the PSP platform because of hackers, but they didn’t. They keep making games even though the bootlegging continually takes a chunk out of profits.
Why can’t you guys be hackers with a conscience? Get the game then buy it if it’s awesome. That’s what I do.
So people like this ‘killerener99′ here can go fuck themselves. Try working those brains cells a little to realize Sony is helping you steal, you fucking moron.
huh??? got 80020148 arror when run tekken 5, got tested with 5.00m33-6
driver change wouldnt help either
OH does it Matter??
IdolM@ster SP
sounds crap to me.
but anyway when GT mobile comes out im buying it on UMD.
X2.
This looks like %$+=.
Looks like sony’s getting smart
THey better not do this with Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep or im going to flip shit!!!!
HOLY H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS
SONY’S BEEFING UP SECURITY
the psp god Dark Alex will save us
like he got the psp-3000 unhacked? well no he didnt and i rekon its gonna be the same but anyway dark alex ROCKS!!!
its the end for us x___x
i hope they stop bootlegging.
If you guys don’t think this is bad, think about what will happen when Resistance:Retribution comes out later this spring. If anything isn’t done about this soon, we will never get to plat that badass game.
If you guys don’t think this is bad, think about what will happen when Resistance:Retribution comes out later this spring. If anything isn’t done about this soon, we will never get to play that game.
Not unless you get off your ass and BUY it.
Derrrrrrr.
With a hacked PSP the UMD wouldnt work!
DERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
It will be hacked soon enough ..besides ..most PSP games nowadays suck ass anyways ..so Its not like your missing much anyways .. If you want go buy a used psp from Gamecrazy for the new games ..and keep your hacked one for emulators..and etc.
Most games suck because developers don’t want to make games just to watch them end up on the internet for free with little or no return on the development/ creation of the game = no revenue. That’s why games suck. Who wants to make a game and get very little or no profit or revenue from it? No one.
You consider Need for Speed Undercover for the PSP “decent”? That game is trash compared to the other racing games on the handheld. By far, Midnight Club: LA Remix is the best racing game for it.
The ISO loader just needs an update.
The Game Companies as well as the Game Developers are already working together to have games with “anti-piracy check” which means the games that you downloaded off from internet won’t work playing on the hacked PSP. For this case, this crappy game.
*lol* so many ppl complain because they cannot download/copy/”steal” games with the new firmware …. why don’t you complain that you cannot get “free” money from any ATM ???
You’re retards and as smart as a bathtub plug!
The complaint here is that people have *bought* the game, and their *legitimate* copy refuses to work because of CFW. Sure, probably most of them want to copy it (because who wants to lug a bunch of discs around and have the drive draining their battery?), but that doesn’t change the fact that the product they paid for doesn’t work. It’s like mocking someone who complains that the ATM didn’t give them anything after debiting their account.
If there’s any copy protection on this game, it’s probably because the developers are butthurt. Apparently, nobody outside of Japan can “appreciate” IdolM@ster SP (or pretty much any NamcoBandai title not released in the US), according to NBGI’s president. So, they use this to justify putting region locks, or some other ridiculous form of protection, on every single one of their games. Then again, this’ll probably get patched eventually, or it’ll “just work” on a later CFW revision.
Also- every person calling a game they’ve never even played “Bad” or “Crap” is a gigantic retard. It’s a manager sim where you manage a J-Pop Idol group. just because that concept makes your brains hurt (it’s too “Japanese” for most American audiences, apparently, and after reading these comments I agree), that doesn’t mean it’s bad. It just means you’re stupid and cannot appreciate the gaming tastes of other people and cultures.
game don’t have region protection.
I know -this- game doesn’t have region protection, but Namco’s other IM@S games do, so this is the first IM@S game I’ve played (got fed up of waiting, so I imported this and “borrowed” an OFW PSP from my brother). It’s pretty fun, but not for everyone.
the jp versions are patched, confirmed working on m33-6 5.0
i hope you guys have fun trying to hack this new update of ours =) it wont be easy we spent a lot of time and money into that firmware update to make sure to put a halt to the hackers the only way you will be able to play it is if update it to out official firmware 5.05 and trus me any games that come out in this month or later will have this secruity.
i got cfw working for new games and will release soon so eat me playstation
…its already hacked and playable
Oh, well i’m just douche aren’t I?
