CFW Folder Blocker v1.1

greg | February 7, 2009

This is news to me; it’s wild stuff actually… Reported are two UMDs — DJ Max Fever and Dissidia: Final Fantasy — that actually check the contents of your memory stick, if one finds something it doesn’t like, it takes unexpected action… And there could be others too.

This is where Torch’s CFW Folder Blocker comes into play. Prevent UMDs from detecting the presence of the ms0:/seplugins and ms0:/iso directories on your memory stick. Since version 1.1, CFW Folder Blocker no longer activates when using homebrew. So as the old adage goes: check yourself, before you wreck yourself.

Well, I have no problem playing Dissidia: Final Fantasy without this. No problems with DATA install either.

Have other ISOs, and plugins turned on as well, so not sure what these peeps are talking about.

Don’t know about DJ Max Fever though, then again, never will.

i read in the post that the UMD checks the memory card it says nothing about iso that are checking it. so i think your safe unless you actually get those games on umd.

what sort of “unexpected action”?

dissidia (jap) works fine without this, but DJ Max Fever won’t boot up yet….. so here goes nothing.

I bought DJ Max Fever from Gamestop and it works fine without any problem at all.
I wish the “unexpected actions” would be more specific than just that unexoected actions.

I think from the descriptions I have run across while searching, it can vary from game to game. (In this case we have 2 known at the moment.)

Dissida : Final Fantasy deletes a few plugins, particularly cwcheat

DJ Max : won’t boot if “.iso” files are found on the memory stick.

Though as noted here, not everyone encounters this problem…

I guess that type of action was later removed on later shipmnents.

That isn’t legal.
No application is authorized to modify/erase any file without the users concent.
Therefore probably to avoid lawsuits, they stoped using such methods. i guess.

Its not like it would solve anything doing that, besides, its easily bypassed (UMD) if you simply remove the memory card when booting, and then inserting it again.

These programmers need much to learn already.

putting custom frimware on the psp is all legal now?

we break a law, and then we go sue them with a cfw psp in our hands lol?

Makes me wonder why Sony even tries this crap. It’s obviously intended to annoy people on custom firmware, but they have to have known we would get a plugin like this to block it. Why waste their time?

Comment by hey numbskulls!
2009-02-08 03:52:26

Ok, Sony didn’t intend for the plugin thing to happen… Sometimes incompatibilities arise. I am a little suspicious of the .iso thing, but I am 99% sure the plugin thing was unintentional. No code is perfect… Not even mine.

Comment by Delerium
2009-02-23 19:46:27

uhh that doesn’t even make sense. You do realize that the programming required to delete a specific folder from a memory stick would be nearly impossible to “accidentally” put in. It targets a known homebrew folder, how is that accidental? your 99% sure just turned into 0.1%. Yes no code is perfect, but imperfect code usually results in bugs and crashes, not deleting specific homebrew which it shouldn’t even be looking for in the first place. (why would any program other than cwcheat look for a cwcheat folder?)

Is this folder checking thing just on the UMDs or does it affect ISOs as well? It would be weird if it’s just on UMDs because in order to get the UMD you will have had to mkae a legit purchase. It seems more aimed at messing up homebrew rather rthan piracy (or I could just be reading into this wrongly)

i’ve encoutered something unusual while i was playing final fantasy dissidia.. well, after exiting it, all my folders for the psp began not readable. PSP folder couldnt be open. videos, pictures, and the others were deleted. i tried almost everything to recover it but nothin happen. so i reformatted my mms without backing it up. which sucks big time!

is this the solution for the problem i had?

Another futile attempt by sony!!! Pretty unimaginative too really !

What about if they made each umd assignable to one psp by making it so that each umd had to be registered…. for instance a umd could be signed to a random prx (each game different) maybe using the assigned prx’s checksum and equating it with a random pice of code from the umd ( this would be assignable by a host prx in flash0 which would go online and rip a specificaly encrypted and padded part of the umd( very small and different each time) and do some maths with the prx’s “say” checksum therefore creating an id that the umd could recognize in a keys.bin kinda way ( but the keys would be put in flash0 )

Was that totally useless… yep

It would need online verification

PSP’s online service isn’t so big deal, so it wouldn’t matter much.
None would use it, and the scene would continue smoothly.

deffinitly useless.

But your idea was by far better than any other sony attept to block homebrew.

They are so stupid…
If they allowed homebrew without kernel access, it would deffinitly kill the piracy.

there are alot of users out there who only use homebrew, and buy their games.

Allowing homebrew would reduce about 50% of the scene’s community, making harder to motivate other programers to make/find exploits to run isos.

God knows you’re playin pirated games. Stealing the output of those who work to earn decent money by developing on psp games. That’s a crime on your part, the guilt is on ya..

You will get retribution for it.

Actually, Fern, an article on TorrentFreak says that 2/3 of piraters don’t feel guilty and think it’s not immoral.

I figure if you’re going to make blind statements like “you guys are retarded,” it’s probably a good idea to speak as though you’re not missing several chromosomes.

As for pirates and feeling guilty, the common justification is “I wasn’t going to buy these games anyway, regardless of whether or not they could be pirated, so it’s not as though they’re losing profit by me downloading them.” It DOES make sense but it’s often a lie.

Question is..
Is this a problem with just the UMD.
Or is it a combination of Firmware + UMD.

Is there a way to trick these UMD to read a ms0: with Default “legit settings”

Is there a way to make a sepperate partition between “legit” and “homebrew”?

I’ve tried both DJ MAX Fever and
DJ MAX Black Square both act funky.

Most problems I’ve had have only been CSO’s that have been over compressed. So by process of elimination. I’ve found out if they were uncompressable or only able to be compressed slightly from the range of 1-9.

don’t worry yourself bout this.

This ain’t getting anywhere.

Probably won’t be happening on any other game.

Besides, its easily bypassable.

You know, I don’t think Sony or Square Enix or whomever, did this intentionally. If it was Sony, they would have to be complete morons. The main reason PSP system sales have been going up every year and the games haven’t been is because that many people know they can have their PSPs hacked. Face it, there aren’t a lot of good PSP games out there. That is also why Sony doesn’t make the PSPs completely unhackable. They know that people will buy new systems to get it hacked and play PSX games or old Nintendo games.

to patch an ISO just dummy the update folder. only a click away with UMDGen and your game is safe.

uh if the umds are only capable of detecting memory stick directories its easier to use an app called PLUGINS TO FLASH By manatails007 wich will rewrite your .bin file in flash0 and assigns the plugin 2 work with VGUAP Vsh Game Update Applications an POPS THIS is good since i know that the psps Flash memory would not be read by the umd since if a working plugin was erased from the flash memory the psp would not boot up or you would get an internal error,
