PSP/Nokia Battery Hack Job *Updated*

greg | January 16, 2009

Update: A picture tutorial is now available here.

A quick story resulting in a quick hack job… LordLeXaT’s PSP battery broke, and with no money to buy a new one, he turned to his MacGyver box set to determine the best possible route… And the result:

What you see above is a standard Nokia battery (BL-5C) pack used with the original PSP battery control board. So now that all is said and done, LordLeXaT has a longer lasting battery than most of you, or so he says…

“The battery is lighter and has nearly 150% lifetime of the original 1800mAh PSP battery, and by the way, the text of the Nokia battery reads 1020mAh.”

We don’t have a tutorial for you, but for the most part, it seems straightforward. And please, exercise caution should you attempt this battery mod yourself.

Interesting. Makes me wonder the different methods used to calculate mAh for batteries. Or if sourcing large amounts of current at a time changes this. Obviously it will vary by device, but that seems like a huge difference.

A shit load of people already did this…and i did that when my battery broke too…way before pandora batteries were made… not sure why this is news…

well maybe because a shit load of other people haven’t heard of it and what you did before wasn’t shared on the internet so…thats that

Nah it was on the net, there were alot of people somehow breaking their battery like cutting it open n it smelt weird n slowly quit holding charge and they replace it with random 3.6V batteries. Even AcidMods had a tut of using AAA batteries for it. Someone mentioned it and i did it, there was Tutorials. But yea the internet is huge and not everyone knows about everything…

I know i sound kinda negative but i dont mean it that way.

Forgive us for not recognizing the slang term for every form of foreign currency. I wonder if you could tell me oh, I dunno…Brazil’s currency and all of its local nicknames without the aid of Google?

But hey; why consider how trivial and unnecessary it is to educate yourself on foreign slang when you can just hop on the America bashing bandwagon?

If there’s nobody write ‘news’ for it. I think this is still considered as ‘news’?

So I think tis is just to replace the original battery pack with the nokia one only?

Comment by LordLeXaT

Facts:

* Pandora still works
* if you want to use the nokia battery
you have to remove the plastic head
of the nokia battery

strange how a lower rated cell phone battery out last a normal psp battery. but i wont be surprised if it does explode. the little cell battery is made for that kind of power draw. and they can be quite explosive if not used as intended.

Comment by 1
2009-01-17 12:38:16

It would damage the psp if something went wrong, but i doubt i would “explode”

Comment by k'hast
2009-01-18 02:42:39

Possible that the battery in a Nokia is a Lithium Ion Polymer battery. (They are used in some models) Which even a lower rated battery can outlast a standard Lithium Ion battery of the same rating.

(Higher energy density)

Actually I found that this works almost 2 years ago, and have seen this tutorial many places, although it seems that modders are not the only ones that are using this. I happened across a couple of batteries bought from eBay that are in fact Nokia batteries, if not some of brand batteries, enclosed in different generic PSP casings. The same Nokia battery I have even found inside an old iPod Mini. Of course I don’t know what the difference really is, but I love guys with ingenious ideas like this. If LordLeXat is doing shit like this then it just means that he is helping the community.

guess you never herd of thermal runaway. it can happen in li-ions if misused or defective. and pulling more power then it is made for = more heat get them to hot and they catch fire weather you are still drawing power or not. there was a wave of defective ones lately in laptop battery’s. due to just using cheap parts. so if you wanna see what happens take a look on youtube for laptop fires.

Comment by Tlj
2009-01-18 00:25:38

That’s not an example of thermal runaway and that wouldn’t happen in this case anyway; the battery isn’t pulling more power than normal. Mah is a measure of capacity, not an amount of power.

Damn I got such a fucking kick out of reading all the comments here.

“wtf is a quid? foreign douchebag”

but the battery hack is news to me, not that i didnt know it could be done but its nice to see it has been and worked, however if the psp battery is lithium ion and you replace is with a lithium polymer battery you are usingg the wrong charger…..

lipo batteries are very dangerous when miscarged. look up lipo fires on youtube.

I personally dont know what type of battery the psp uses but make sure you use a matching type cell battery so that it can properly charge. I also do not see how a battery made to power a cell phone will outlast the psp battery but oh well.

Just found this item since my battery has slowly been loosin charge since i did the pandora mod on it found the old nokia fone out the desk draw and took about followin the tutorial pics and successfully implanted into the psp battery case and so far its charging which is more than the standard battery would do so i say its a success as a mod although i would prob recommend the BL-4C as its slightly shorter and easier to fit in the psp battery case
