PSPdisp v0.2 Released

greg | January 15, 2009

Despite the minor version bump, we’re talking big changes for PSPdisp version 0.2. If you missed JJS’ initial release, PSPdisp enables your PSP to act as a second monitor at a 960×544 resolution. Extend your Windows desktop, mirror the display, whatever — it’s the dual monitor deal.

PSPdisp 0.2 changes:

New features:

  • can now mirror any existing display
  • works on 64 bit systems now
  • display driver for Windows XP x64
  • display driver supports several display modes from 480×272 to 1920×1080
  • all resolutions also available rotated by 90° (portrait mode)
  • additional “Follow mouse” mode
  • selectable viewport size for “Follow mouse” and “Static” view
  • viewport may be rotated by 90, 180 or 270 degree
  • reacts on display settings changes, no restart necessary
  • multi-threaded, opening the menue will no longer freeze the display
  • PSP can be unplugged and replugged while PSPdisp is enabled
  • added option to automatically enable PSPdisp when the PSP is plugged in
  • installer can now copy the game files to the PSP
  • mapping mouse and keyboard buttons to the PSP controls
  • experimental Wlan support

Bug fixes:

  • installer bug marking the display driver for uninstall
  • stuttering display on some usb chipsets
  • “libusb0.dll not found” error when the usb driver is only preinstalled
  • display miniport driver failing to load on Windows 2000 (Thanks Raul!)
  • failure to retrieve the display positions when enabling the PSPdisp display the first time

Known issues:

  • if the Wlan connection is interrupted it will hang the PSP and Windows application
  • enabling PSP control may interfere with mouse and keyboard operation

Download: PSPdisp v0.2
(includes Windows installer, drivers, PSP binary, source, etc…)

Yea, with this new update this is now possible. All you need to do is to activate the control mode in the right click menu. You can then move the mouse cursor with you analog stick and click using circle and square. Its in more detail if you look at the readme file.

quite the bright child, eh?

Well, if you read in the description, it allowed you to use the PSP as a 2nd monitor for your PC.

So, I guess to simplify the answer.

PSP = USB LCD Monitor

This app is great. I’ve been waiting for a subsequent release to the first version. It has been quite a while but it has been worth the wait. The new features implemented are great. Cant wait for more releases. Hope they will get better with even more features.

Thanks JJS

this app is ****ing awesome and is doing great just for a 0.2 release. it’s Almost like VNC, but needs a mouse speed update.

I agree, having the D-Pad for sensitive touches is very good, but the Analog needs to move (IMO) a TAD faster.

This is like the most awesome thing on the psp.
Is it possible to connect the other way around? (PSPdisp running on PC, then connect from a different location via PSP and wifi)

Comment by Jaryth
2009-01-16 01:38:07

That would be cool, but Im guessing if you set it up like that (streaming over internet?) it would be VERY slow. Although possible… if you set up a Router to port forward the connection (on both sides…) it… MIGHT be possible.

But… my favorite is still TeamViewer.

Ok, I was playing with the Wireless connection, and the Mouse Control… and I must say, I was VERY impressed. Thats pretty damn awesome if I do say so myself.

And just to prove a point… loaded up NoCa$h’s DS Emulator, switched the PSP to 90 Degree rotation, and (KINDA) played a DS game on PSP :P. Sure…. it was a FAR to complicated workaround… but Im proud of it none the less.

I also confused the HELL out of my Roommate, when my computer started controlling its self when I Was out of the room XD.

This + Windows On Screen Keyboard = Pure Win.

Very much looking forward to future updates!

this is great app but everytime i need to enable the wifi to connect, unlike psp VNC anytime you can connect.(any other way to make it enable everytime?)

this is much faster than pspvnc =) but =( when i play video with GOM player my comp freeze.

and btw how to change to speed the the mouse?

if you get that error as it says disable any psp plugins using usb like remote joy. it fixes it. i tried it myself awesome new features like full screen working surprised on well you see.

it could use a few more things like being able to use the windows 2nd monoter features. so you could put like your favorite app on the psp screen wile playing a game like a messanger. and simply moving the mouse to the psp screen like a real duel monoter setup. also if it could use thows calls you could turn down the rez just for the psp.

the mouse emulation needs to move faster maybe the ability to change it to whatever setting we like. using the windows keyboard works but i think being able to use the psp virtual keyboard would be nicer. but i guess if you got the windows calls working you could just send to virtual keyboard to the psp screen.

Second monitor feature? I remember getting that working on the older PSPdisp… havent tryed it on this one yet though.

In the settings dialog (Desktop > Right Click > Properties > Settings > PSP Screen > Extend my Desktop to this display), I was able to get it going…. not as good as one would think, well not with that version at least, due to the Set resolution (having to shrink windows to fit in the space, wasnt really worth it). It might work better with this version ( if it still works at all).

This app looks sweet I’m a big fan of VNC so if this is faster I’m def. going to get it. One question though… in the description it said it had mouse follow eg:
“additional “Follow mouse” mode”
does this mean what you do with your mouse is displayed on the psp like up close? so let’s say I’m old or have a small font I could, in theory, use my psp as an “up close” monitor so I could read better? I’m at work so I don’t have any means to try this. I was just asking if that were true.

Comment by Jaryth
2009-01-16 17:04:02

Not unless you use the Windows Magnifier function, and have the Magnification set to your PSP screen… but thats kinda pointless…

The PSP will display the font, at the same size or smaller then it is on your screen.

You can play RE4 via PSP.I have made a PES09 map file as default controller settings. But PES09 is too slow for playing(tried 640×480 lowest quality no hope)on PSP screen. But you can still use it as a wireless or wired controller for PES.

http://rapidshare.com/files/184426681/pes.control copy file to prgm files/pspdisp/app then choose it.

If frame rate will be better and maybe a server mode and sound transfer, we can access our PC via PSP all over the world ;)

Pretty good update, i’ve been using v0.1 since it was released.

My only gripe is that I can no longer set the update interval to 100 ms, it won’t let me. With the last version i could keep CPU usage under 12% in high quality with 100 ms update interval. now it’s being a system hog as the lowest i can set is 50 ms and it hovers around 20-25%, too much. For this to be practical for me i need a lower CPU usage, please make 100 and 200 ms work again :)

could it be because of the added 30 – 40 ms options? now there are 6 where there was 4 before, and only 4 are still selectable?

Keep up the great work, this is a killer app, easily my fav PSP homebrew to date.

Can I use this with a computer that has a broken screen? My old laptop got dropped, and the screen is cracked so that I cannot see anything. There are some things that I would like to get off of it, so can I install this on a computer without a screen?

if you use via USB it can be coz it has auto-connect function with USB.But you need a external monitor for initial setup and settings…

the amount of free space wouldn’t really have an effect on performance. its only when windows begins to gurn about not having a lot of space left for stuff like virtual memory that your performance it affected. i’d say that the n64 emu is pretty taxing on the display, so the interval rate isn’t able to keep up with the n64. thats what i reckon anyways =)

no sweat man! to that i’d say that resident evil 4 is professionally made, optimised code whereas the n64 is bedroom homebrew. i gave my n64 a shot and it ran a bit juddery too. guess its just the way it goes eh? =)

Its like somebody mentioned above. At 50ms refresh, it eats about 20% CPU. If you dont have a top of the line comp, this will definitely slow down you emulation. Emulation is very CPU heavy whereas RE4 is probably more GPU centered.
