The Sparta Exploit! “Hello World” and SDK Released

Back at it… MaTiAz & FreePlay have released a “Hello World” demonstration, as well as the SDK used to build said homebrew demo, for the newly discovered GripShift vulnerability.
Now coined the Sparta exploit, here’s what you should know: for the moment, you cannot downgrade or install a custom firmware with this, you may only enjoy Sparta-compiled homebrew and hope Sparta later leads to kernel mode access.

FAQ --- Q: Will this allow downgrading? A: No, because this is an usermode exploit and functions required to downgrade are only available in kernel mode. Q: Why the name? A: Because the original exploit was found by overwriting the player name with "this is spartaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa". Q: Can/Will Sony block this? A: Yes. Q: I wanna make homebrew using the exploit. How? A: Get FreePlay's GS SDK: http://tinyurl.com/sparta-sdk. It has some constraints though, check the readme. The Hello World was written with it.

i am in a contact with a close friend of dark-alex………….he haz his own exploit for kernel mode acces but it cant be shown coz sony will block it……but he iz workin on thiz exploit so that we can make the use of it……

Great news; I just hope the new constraints and SDK don’t lead to another mess of compatibility issues, where this program only works on this motherboard with this custom firmware version on this day of the month, etc.
I have a feeling this new SDK will be short-lived. I’ll stick to the standard one for now and see if this goes any furthen, then I’ll reconsider.

Your correct that its the game but also the exploit may lead to a pandora for 3000s.
Regardless of the Game exploit a firmware update can stop the exploit, so it is also the firmware.
If there is a pandora from this then we wont even need the game and future firmware updates will be unable to stop hacking of psp 3000.
Just don’t update to latest firmwares. There’s no point. All games still play fine and there aren’t a whole lot of newer games coming out worthy of an update.
Put your 3000’s aside for a rainy day guys, it’s coming and there’s no stopping it. :)

Its actually a good idea, because before pandora this is what they did. I have had the PSP since the firs week release in the US so I remember using 1.50 firmware and having to use 2 MS’s to run homebrew. Good ‘ol Swap Exploit.

Ok, i understand this is userland and not kernel. i understand what an overflow is. i’ve been around the scene since GTA:LCS and before. so my question is this: what exactly is the diff between this overflow and the GTA one? or was the GTA one not an overflow? also the homebrew sdk and only use the calls the game already uses correct, so how did they get around this with GTA? did GTA allow kernel from the beginning?
My guess is there is no difference, and once they had usermode through GTA, they found an exploit in the kernel itself to get kernel access.

Hi,the difference is nothing but @ the time we used LCS or Lumines there was already a kernel xploit discovered(kxploit)
so that were be able to use the usermode xploit to downgrade to the FW where the kxploit wasn`t patched(1.5). This xploit is only the door in front of the high secured door.If the 3000 would use the 1.5 kernel we where be able to downgrade.But the thing is now we need an exploit on the 3xx kernel.

ok got it. usermode was used in combination with a pre-discovered exploit. on the site that this is from lan.st, they mention an exploit they found but aren’t releasing yet. so with the two discoveries why can’t we downgrade yet?

Even the 3000 supports 1.5 kernel you cannot downgrade without access to the kernel. So, you are wrong :)
Actually, u just need the ISO version of the US Grip Shift is enough to load the This is Spartaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! Exploit by MaTiAz… Umd disc is not required at all. I try it myself countless times… Btw, great job done and keep up the good work!
The ISO version is fine and good but that’s using it with custom firmware. You will need the UMD to get the exploit working with an official FW PSP 3000. And L O freakin L…check out ebay…yesterday there were 2 Gripshifts for auction…now look how many are for sale…

I know that you need umd for the psp-3000 to work. My friend who has a game shop can order them for around S$30 a piece. If you want it, i can help you to order.
Always good to be specific in one post…good news for those that prefer the piano black psp 3000 over the silver one…the exploit has been tested and confirmed to work with the US/Canada Black psp 3000 that comes in the Ratchet & Clank bundle!
if they hack a 3000 it would work on a 2001 as well. they use the same hardware. weather they can make Pandora work again is yet to be seen.
I have a question could it be possible to make a program with this so that when you load the game save the program simply tells the psp to run a completely different program somewhere else on your memory stick that modifies the firmware or would you still need kernal mode for the second program to run?
as far as i know you would be able to run another program as long as it would run in user mode like emulators and stuff but it would have to run in user mode
